Keep the desktop icons where I put them to restart the computer

I fix my desktop icons I would.  The next time I turn on my computer they are all back on the left side again.  Is it possible that I can make their stay where I put them.  What is the point of reorganization if I can't.

Hi bragabaron,

See if the following procedure helps you.

1. open Regedit.exe minimize.
2. Click Start, shut down the computer.
3. press on and press and hold the CTRL, ALT and SHIFT keys and click on the Cancel button.
4. switch to the window of the registry editor and find the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\1\Desktop

5. rename the "Desktop" key to something else, say 'OldDesktop '.
6. close the registry editor
7. press CTRL + ALT + DELETE to open the Task Manager
8. click on the stop menu, then select "logout ".
9 reconnect customize once again, the placement of the icons on the desktop.
10. restart Windows and see if the icon positions are kept.

  • is there a way to make the icons remain in the same places and not move when I turned off and restart my desktop computer? I like to keep the icons where I put them.

I do a lot of important writing, and it would be so much nicer if the icons of file would be left in the same positions on the desktop, so that when I started working I don't panic, thinking that some kind an important file has been lost. Please help me understand how to set up my office to keep my icons in place, if possible. Thank you!

Make sure the settings are as the other poster said.

This could happen if the Explorer doesn't correctly. The positions of icons are saved at the stop.

    • Create and position a file on the desktop.
    • Close Windows Explorer
    • Start - All Programs - Accessories - right on command prompt and choose run as administrator.

  • Windows 7 pro 64. The desktop icons won't stay where I put them. After a reboot, the desktop icons are always rearranged.

I've set up my office while I have the following icons down the left side of the top in the following order: computer, network, System (C), (D) options, reader of DVD (E), trash.

Whenever I restart my computer, the icons are rearranged as: computer, network, trash, reader of DVD (E), options (D), System (C).

I don't want to add all the new icons on the desktop, because I know they won't stay where I put them. When I was using XP it would happen only when I changed resolution but with Win 7, it happens every time that I reboot.

Reorganization of auto desk is off, snap to grid is turned off, sort by has verified. I use two monitors. All the gadgets that I have in my hand right 2ndary monitor are stay in place very well. The icons gives me the problem are on the left side of the left main screen.

I made an image of my hard drive just after the installation of windows 7 and before to install the drivers of manufacturers and updates of windows.

Today, I restored this image, reinstalled the drivers from manufacturers and made the updates of windows. The problem seems to have disappeared now.

I am re-imaging my hard drive after you install the complete driver/updating. I hope I don't need to use it, but I will if I have to. I still don't know what caused it in the first place, but at least now I have an option of fast food if it happens again. I'll recreate the image on the hard drive after all major software install from that time, I have two images. A fundamental right after pilot installations and one after each installation of software.

  • THE DESKTOP ICONS WON'T STAY WHERE I PUT THEM

I tried to combine some icons on my desktop in the way that suits me, but I often find that they won't stay where I put them.

Sometimes they simply will not sit when I try to put them (especially near the perimeter) and at other times, after that I did something else, when I go back on the desktop what they moved.

    Thanks for that.

    That was the problem.

When I opened the menu as you have suggested, "align icons on the grid" has been selected.

When I removed the tick that solved the problem.

    Thank you kindly.

  • Why don't my desktop icons stay where I put them?

My laptop is a HP Pavillion DV7 - 3164cl, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.  My question is simple I don't know, but I can't understand it.  I fix my icons from the desktop to the places I want them, I turned off the computer and when I turn it back on, the icons went back to their columns on the left side of the screen, how can I keep them I would?

    Thanks for any help!  Janell

Thanks for your suggestion.  I tried but appreciate your time trying to help me solve this problem.  It doesn't really help.  When I went back to the box that you sent a picture, I noticed the choice of refresh.  I re-arranged my icons again, refresh shot, handed over my computer and they stayed where I put them!  Problem solved.

  • Windows7 task bar icons won't stay where I put them

I spent hours carefully "pin" some 20 shortcuts to the Win 7 taskbar. When I removed some UI features, ALL icons have been deleted without warning.

Then, I collected all the icons, this time putting them in a folder and put the folder in the to-do bar. So far Windows did not remove the folder or icons.

But. After carefully put the icons in alphabetical order, all the hours or the icons are in a different order. There is no sorting feature for the icons in the taskbar (Windows 7 seems to have lost MANY useful features). The underlying folder is sorted by file name, but the taskbar seems not aware of my stated preference.

What is happening, and how can I convince Win 7 I really know where I want the icons and ask them left in place?

I know I can "lock" the taskbar, but I've never had to do before.

Thanks for any idea you may have.

    Jon

For years, Windows has had a feature where he puts most recently used icons at the top of the lists, or even remove items that have not been used for some time.  Since I was oriented "positional", this "feature" always totally threw me.  I want to know that a specific icon is always '(deuxieme from the left.  So, I disabled it in every Microsoft program that I've met, including Windows.

I think that my turn this off in Windows 7 has prevented Windows to constantly rearrange my icons.  I would have spotted it earlier, but the shifts that took place were NOT correct implementation of most recently used icons on one end or the other of the list.  In fact, the transpositions appeared more arbitrary than thoughtful.

If someone of another unwanted meeting moving icons of Windows 7, you can try to disable this feature.  Honestly, I don't know what is the name of the feature. Or I don't like.  This "feature" has lost a lot of my time.

  • XP... The desktop icons will not put

XP... The desktop icons will not put. I did a lot of research on this issue, read the different responses on many forums, including and have tried much of the recommendations... I'm not familiar with the functions of establishment of the arrangement of the desktop icon and this is the first time I met this kind of problem. "Lock Web items on desktop" is checked, "Snap to grid" is not checked (my preference, but I find that it will check mysteriously itself after the icons rearrange themselves to the left of the screen, apparently by making use of automatic reorganization, even if it is not checked), I tried securityguy14 registry change response dated December 7, 2009 , have installed and use the program "Icon restore" that changes the Recycle Bin, my computer, and another icon of office, I do not remember to add a backup/restore function for the setting icon on the desktop... is what bought me a brief period of mental health before they rearrange themselves after a few constantly unidentifable strike entered sometimes without "rhyme or reason", not unique to anything, preventing me from shrink down to a specific cause. I conducted several audits of malware with paid and free programs and there is no indication of anything invading my system, it works fine other wise. Help!

I just got a 8 GB clip and put music on it. I went into albums and created new folders for the type of music (dance rock etc.), but when I use it the music is unknown all together. When I plug it into my laptop music is always where I put it.

How can I create albums and keep the music where I want

    Thank you

The Clip (or indeed any Sansa player) does not name of file or folder. It displays information in the ID3 tag embedded in the file .mp3 himself. So, while you can organize or categorize your music in any folder/file hierarchy you want which makes sense to you, you must also make sure that ID3 tags have the correct information in them or that they appear correctly on your drive.

The FAQ on the ID3 tags he explains more in detail and how to change them.
