  I don't know that this is not what you want to hear.  However, from the beginning of your notes, you said that the system was installed with an invalid Windows operating system CD and since you bought Windows XP SP 2, which is the authentic product.  If I am wrong please correct me.

  If you try to run SFC scannow from Windows XP SP2, you will continue to receive the request for the additional CD cover Service Pack 3.

  If you have two options:

  (1) do a fresh install with the Windows XP SP2 and upgrade to SP3 on sites I've proposed below.

  or

  (2) simply download the Service Pack 3 of one of the websites below and use this CD to finish the scannow SFC.

  I think you'd be a lot better off takeing the time to back up all your important documents and files.

  This will give you at least with all the files and informaition about your device drivers that are currently on your system now.  I had the IT Pro version for years and would be with her.  I know that this version provide you all the keys for any product you may have and no password specified for email or the system.  I know that the free version will not provide passwords, but it can provide you with product keys. At the end of the installation, a message appears with the following text "Windows could not update the configuration to start the computer. Installation cannot continue.
