Laptop won't start, added external hard drive. Pavilion g6, WIN 7

Boot Manager Windows coming to the power upward with message: "Windows could not start...". Info: the boot selection failed because a required device is not accessible. "No previous problems with starting, but, yesterday, I hooked up a new external hard drive (WD Passport 1 TB) to back up my entire computer.  Everything went well: formatted, partitioned the drive (500 GB), but I clicked on 'active' on one of the menus.  Remember that a single partition on a hard disk can be active and in the case of the c: / drive is the default for the MBR location, but this player is also the default location for the operating system (unless otherwise designated).  I just didn't know it would be a problem if I did an active partition on another disk entirely.  I only have WIN 7 on the machine, but I guess that the BIOS is looking for the operating system on the external hard drive (it will not start if I have the HD Ext. hung or not), is not to find a MBR or a BONE.  However, before shutting down the computer yesterday, I created an image of the system disk hard Ext. as that was my intention in the first place.  Turned off the computer and it does not restart until today, whereupon no boot, error events began.

Never mind. Finally understood how to get to the boot menu options then to get machine to start from a
"System repair disc" I did on the first pass the machine a couple of years. I thought that the machine should boot from it then in order after that don't is not the start of HD I had designate the CD as a boot device to make it work.

  • Start with external hard drive problem

I recently bought a Western Digital 1 TB external hard drive. When it is connected through the USB port my Pavilion a815n Windows XP hangs on the blue HP screen at startup. Western Digital technical support Advisor info sent to me I need to change a setting in BIOS but I can't find the trunk of USB device option setting in the BIOS of HP.  Can you tell me how to access this setting, or what else to do to solve the problem?  Thank you!  Jake

    Problem:
After connecting a device USB to the PC, the computer does not start in Windows.

    Cause:
The motherboard has a boot from the USB device, or a similar option, which is enabled in the system BIOS.

    Solution:
In the system BIOS, disable the option to boot from the USB device and the USB Legacy Support option. This will allow the PC complete the process on the internal hard disk and allow you to enter Windows. If this does not work for any reason, you should boot your PC before connecting the USB key. Once the computer is fully booted Windows, plug the USB and wait for the operating system to detect the drive.

Update the BIOS seems to have solve the problem. It was normally restarted with the attached hard drive.  Thank you!!  Jake

  • Portege 3440: ntoskrnl.exe file needs to be replaced - how to start without external hard drive

    Hello

My 3440 has developed a problem, I think the boot.ini file corruption that it requests to the file ntoskrnl.exe replaced at startup. The problem is that I don't have an external drive to boot from. When I press F2 it gives me a list of devices, that which no no it starts from. I don't have the external CD drive for this, and it won't have a USB floppy drive.

It is impossible for me to solve this problem without the external port replicator or a cd player?

    Thanks in advance

    Pete

    Hello

Unfortunately, without the access on the Windows CD you will not be able to fix it.

The ntoskrnl.exe file is placed on the original Windows CD in the i386 folder.
You could start at the beginning of the CD to make the repair console by pressing R
In the repair console, you can use this command:

    Expand D:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_C:\windows\ntoskrnl.exe
    (D is the CD drive)

But as said above seems that you will need the CD player

But wait if the i386 folder has been installed on your HARD drive you could expand the ntoskrnl.exe in this folder to C:\windows\

  • Dreamweaver 8 evil: this is my laptop is dying or my external hard drive?

    Hi all.

Since yesterday, I was not able to successfully open files in DW8 on my laptop. I use the menu files, one in the lower right of the screen below the CSS menu. When I click on the file, nothing happens. So I click again and I get an error message:

    Title: rundll32.exe
Content of the message: the instruction at "0x7c910f29" referenced memory at "0x00000000" memory could not be 'read '.

Here's why I think it is my laptop:

When I use the file menu at the top left of the screen... DW8 opens each file I ask without fail.

Data: I own (the last of this brand that I will never possess) a laptop Dell XPS 2 years (bought new, you mind). I was warned by friends that the motherboards in this brand tends to deteriorate. My friends are professionals who difficulty computers for a living. This isn't a scam on the manufacturer. I really need to know because this will require the purchase of a new machine at a time where, I can't afford to do. Lately this machine did funny things, but I need to know experts here, if someone knows the possible origin of this problem. I use an external Seagate 160 MB hard drive USB who served me flawless for almost 2 years.

So... is it my high-dollar laptop, Windows XP, or a freak of Nature that provides me with this nonsense?

    Help, please...

  • Portege M300 to start the external hard drive?

It is possible to start the computer laptop while using an external usb HDD?

How do they do that? I want to use the operating system win2000 to start.
    Thanks adavance

First of all, you must make sure that you have a bunch of USB option in the BIOS.

How you install an operating system on an external device, use google to find instructions. It should work like BartPE, which you can put on a USB key.

  • How long should it take a backup of your laptop (windows Vista) on an external hard drive (Lots if free space.

I'm writing this, it took well over 30 mins so far and it's not even halfway through the.

    Hello Stephen Murphy,

It really depends on what you save. Small files shouldn't take more than a few minutes (or seconds), plus large (1 GB for example) files may take 4 or 5 minutes or a bit longer.

If you back up your entire drive you might be looking at hours for backup.

Another problem, of course, is the speed of the USB connection on the external drive. 1 USB, for example will be much slower that USB 2 and USB 2 will be slower than the USB 3.

In many cases, it is necessary to "play the game of waiting" until the data transfer is completed.

Mod edit: System model added to the front of the subject line to improve visibility / clarity.

I suspect that your HARD drive has a problem, generally, it's like that, it won't start if the HARD drive was fried on you, try a key recovery to restore as long as day 1. Otherwise, buy a slap of casing 2.5 drive your hard drive inside, save the files after reinstall windows 8 or make the one key recovery.

  • create the dual boot with an external hard drive

I want to create dual boot laptop (OS 2 in 1) in my laptop, but my internal hard drive reach maximum (3) logical partition for my windows operating system 7 is not allow me to create a new logical partition install win8 pro. I've planed to buy an external hard drive and connect with my laptop and install win8 in external hard drive and use win8 and 7. Is it possible? If possible how to create? Please give me instructions step by step.

    Hi Karthik,

If your hard drive has enough free disk space, you can install a newer version of Windows on a separate partition and keep the earlier version of Windows on your computer. It's called a multiboot or dual-boot configuration. Every time that you start your computer, you can choose which version of Windows to run. You can also install Windows 8 on an external hard drive and use it to dual boot.

You can see the Microsoft article below for more information about this.

    Install multiple operating systems (multiboot)

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-AU/Windows/install-multiple-operating-system-multiboot#1TC=Windows-7

    I hope this helps.

Please report if the problem persists and we will be happy to help you further.

  • Windows 7 and external hard drives

I have a Dell laptop with Windows 7 Ultimate edition.  I used to be able to connect an external hard drive and back up files.

Without warning, my computer won't recognize the external hard drive, as in don't even know not its here.  For a brief moment, I would get an error message, but now nothing.

By browsing the internet, I see this is a very common problem and nothing I have tried seems to work to correct the problem.  Site Microsoft Web is no help at all.

    Is there a solution?

    Hello

    1. Do you have an error message when you connect the external hard drive to the computer?
    2. Have you tried to plug the hard drive into another USB port or another computer?
    3. Is the computer recognizing other USB devices to connect to the computer?
    4. Did you recent hardware or changes to the software to the computer before the show?

I suggest you try the following steps if the hard drive works fine with one computer to another, and none of the USB devices are not getting recognized by the computer. You could deal with this problem for several reasons such as external hard drive defective, obsolete or damaged USB drivers does not assign a drive letter for your key USB etc.

You can refer to the suggestion of Shekhar S in the following link and check if it helps.
