  I'm looking for a way to use PowerCLI to check if a Windows Server is virtual or physical.  What I want to do is the following.  When I apply the patches to Windows I want to run a powershell script to check if the server is virtual or physical.  If the server is a virtual server so I would like to take a snapshot of the server and then apply patches.

  You can use the cmdlet Get - VM PowerCLI to check if the server virtual or physical. If the server is virtual the cmdlet returns an object. If the server is physical the cmdlet will give an error and returns nothing. Something like:

  $vm = Get-VM YourVmName
  If ($vm) {
    New-Snapshot -VM $vm -Name "Before Patch"
  }

  I have my vCenter Server on an x 86 Sun Blade Server.  The chassis is end of life, and I want to spend my vCenter in its virtual environment.  I suppose it could work like any P2V, but are there any other measures special to do or be aware of?   I don't want to corrupt my environment.

  In case your concern is safety, the mode of operation of the converter for Linux P2V is safe - it creates the destination machine and it fuels from a live CD. Then it's this destination VM that connects to the source and the fact cloning. If you are allowed to configure the firewall to allow a SSH at the source, it should be good (see pages 12 and 26, 27 in the user's guide)

  If you can not afford, you can optionally install a temporary ESX Server somewhere (in a DMZ?) and convert it.
