Ligatures do work?

Please help a model to solve a problem with ligatures. In InDesign CS4 all letter combination as fi; FL are yellow. This means that my ligatures are disabled? Enable this option in style. ????

When you see the highlighted yellow it is to show you that the glyphs have been replaced for ligature glyphs.

"You can turn this option off the ' preferences > Composition" and clear the checkbox for "Glyphs" with the following.

All this is showing you is that it is pointing out where the ligatures are sometimes using ligatrues on the fine print especially, causing readabitly problems.

He is just pointing out the area for you, do not change anything.

You must be activated in the character Panel Ligatures or styles paragraph for ligatures to work. And not all fonts included in the games of ligature glyphs.

  • How optically kern between spaces?

    Hi all!

    I'm a typographer who works frequently with different Urdu fonts. I recently developed many policies of Nastaleeq based ligature that work fine in InDesign. However, I have serious trouble with InDesign optical kerning feature that works as expected between words but fails between spaces. Take a look at these pictures, I took on the issue:

    Optical kerning is disabled:

    b501.gif

    Optical kerning is enabled:

    b502.gif

    Tower optical kerning on with a space between the words:

    b503.gif

    You see, Nastaleeq script is cursive in nature and needs no spaces we are used with most of the fonts. So my question to the experts here is how to get optical kerning between words despite the spaces? Is it possible I can do InDesign ignores space or replace it with another character that optically kerns between two words, regardless of the space between the two? Thank you!

    Hi Arif,

    I'm really not an expert in the script Nastaleeq.

    My first thought is:

    Replace all spaces with two special characters:

    1. a special character of DISCRETIONARY_HYPHEN , including the formatting of this specificity would be no fill and no respect.

    2. a special character of ZERO_WIDTH_NONJOINER

    The formatting could be done with a GREP Style, the substitution with a search/replace action or by script.

    Optically, this could work, but maybe bring side effects, if you export to XML, HTML, and EPUB.

    To test this, simply Select a single space between two words and run extract following script ExtendScript (JavaScript):

    //Select a space between two words:
    var myStory = app.selection[0].parentStory;
    var myIndex = app.selection[0].insertionPoints[0].index;

    //Insert two special characters:
    myStory.insertionPoints[myIndex].contents = SpecialCharacters.DISCRETIONARY_HYPHEN;
    myStory.insertionPoints[myIndex+1].contents = SpecialCharacters.ZERO_WIDTH_NONJOINER;

    //Remove the selected space:
    myStory.characters[myIndex+2].remove();

    //Format the DISCRETIONARY HYPHEN:
    myStory.characters[myIndex].fillColor = "None";
    myStory.characters[myIndex].strokeColor = "None";

    I tested this script with some Arabic text model in InDesign CS6 (German), where I've replaced all the spaces.

    Before and after have not shown any hidden characters:

    After the display of all characters hidden:

    The font used is Adobe Arabic, language is Arabic.

    With this font and used words (I really have no idea what they say, if anything) I think this procedure is pure nonsense.

    But in your case, it may be useful:

    Optically there is no space between the words and hyphenation still works.

    Permanent excess should be prevented by the hyphen descretionary where its fill and stroke is set to none and will be invisible, if hyphenation is done.

  • @font-face missing in Firefox 15 ligatures

    I use a @font-face for my site, http://lunatorium.com/, and the ligatures fi and ff are not displayed to the top.

    This happened in the latest versions of Firefox and was corrected by adding - moz-font-feature-settings: "liga = 0; rule @font-face for policies affected, but since the upgrade to Firefox 15, which set no longer works. The solution is in place and the ligatures appear not, but ONLY 15 of Firefox. All other browsers are fine.

    The syntax has changed and is now 'liga' 0;

    -moz-font-feature-settings: "liga=0";
    -moz-font-feature-settings: "liga" 0;

  • Time missing ligatures in FF9

    Using once in a CSS, I discovered that FF9 makes the ligature 'ff', 'fi', 'ffi' in this font, omitting them completely - the word 'office' becomes 'eco' on the screen.

    I put to the top of the test page in the reference below, showing that the behavior.
    The page displays correctly with IE 8, Chrome 16, FF8, Opera 11.60, FF3.6.

    You have made a mistake with the order of the rules.

    If you use the property are then you set all the font properties, to ignore you - moz-font-feature-settings the rule of police following him.

    To avoid these errors, is always preferable to define all properties explicitly (font size, font family) and do not use generic police version.

    It should work if swap you the order.

    -moz-font-feature-settings: "liga=0";

  • Typekit poster bad ligatures

    When I use some Typekit fonts, they have a different appearance in MUSE online. Bookmania, for example, shows beautiful ligatures between capital and lower-case letters, and I use it for this feature. However, when I publish the page, ligatures are not as I wanted. Any ideas?

    Hi Christophe,

    Here is the answer that we talked by e-mail for the history of the forum:

    Muse does not support Discretionary ligatures like Th default, due to the limited support of browser. To include Discretionary ligatures in your site, two changes in Page Properties.

    (1) under Options: change the menu character set by default to all the

    (2) under the terms of metadata: Add this CSS custom for the HTML code "for"."section to turn on conditional ligatures in the site:"

    Then export the project as HTML, once again, and you will get the ligatures like "Th":

    This works in all desktop browsers, but not on iOS or Android:

  • Remove some fonts ligatures if follow-up greater than 0

    I import files with certain fonts with follow-up set to different sizes. Some fonts with some ligatures do not work when monitoring is a value greater than 0 without first turning off the Standard Ligatures. I use a script that checks to see if these certain fonts are active and if yes then disable ligatures for this font.

    My knowledge of javascript is very basic and I have created this script from especially copy and paste and change things, I found in the guide to script. So, I'm sure that my code could use some better organize. I got it first with a bunch of cases identified and then discovered that I could use the | use multiple values so I thought this might be a better way to write it?

    I want to add another if the statement that first checks to see if these fonts have followed together whatever it is greater than 0, and if yes, then turn off ligatures, but if not keep as their market. They work a lot when the tracking is at 0 and I would like to be able to use them again instead of completely disable the.

    var docRef = app.activeDocument;

        for (var w = 0; w < docRef.textFrames.length; w++) {
            var textRef = docRef.textFrames[w];
            if ((textRef.textRange.characterAttributes.textFont == textFonts.getByName('Skitch')) ||
                (textRef.textRange.characterAttributes.textFont == textFonts.getByName('AmarelinhaBold')) ||
                (textRef.textRange.characterAttributes.textFont == textFonts.getByName('Amarelinha')) ||
                (textRef.textRange.characterAttributes.textFont == textFonts.getByName('Zalderdash')) ) {
                textRef.textRange.characterAttributes.ligature = false;
            }
        }

    redraw();

    Again, I am very new to javascript, but I think that this should be a fairly simple addition? I honestly don't know even if the redraw(); is it necessary? Finally, I want to add to another script to import.

    Thanks for your time!

    It's ok, to optimize well enough, you can make a variable of any object that is called repeatedly, for example characterAttributes, moreover, there is that one way to know if you must redraw(), remove it and if you see that your code works, then it is not necessary

    var docRef = app.activeDocument;

    for (var w = 0; w < docRef.textFrames.length; w++) {
        var textRef = docRef.textFrames[w];

        var charAttributes = textRef.textRange.characterAttributes;
        var textfont = charAttributes.textFont;

        if ((textfont == textFonts.getByName('Skitch')) ||
            (textfont == textFonts.getByName('AmarelinhaBold')) ||
            (textfont == textFonts.getByName('Amarelinha')) ||
            (textfont == textFonts.getByName('Zalderdash')) ) {
            if (charAttributes.tracking >= 1) {
                charAttributes.ligature = false;
            }
        }
    }

  • Optical kerning is not working for the Arabic fonts!

    Hi all!

    I've been a user of Indesign for years. Year after year, I love the improvements to Adobe developers are in this great Application of desktop publishing. A few days ago Adobe Indesign CC 2015 has been with significant improvements. But my biggest concern; optical kerning for Arabic fonts, it is still an unsolved problem. I don't know if this is a design flaw or that's how it's designed to work. In any case, I can show my problem below:

    Adobe Arabic font with optical kerning turns off:

    b555.gif

    Arab police Adobe with optical kerning turned on:

    b557.gif

    You can clearly see that so many words starts to break at the joints, once the optical kerning is turned on, while those who do not break are simple characters or ligatures. If we, Arab font developers are stuck with no option, but to make ligatures as much as possible just to be able to use the integrated optical kerning feature exceptional InDesign as it is currently only available in Indesign.

    Any ideas how we can make optical kerning to work for Arab fonts work without messing up the text?

    Laubender

    I'm sorry. This time it seems that you are out of luck.

    At least I see no way to solve this problem other than working only with values of kerning built into the police (metric kerning).

  • Is there a way to automatically disable ligatures?

    Hey all,.

    Does anyone know how to automatically disable ligatures in InDesign CC?

    We use IDS to work, but it's usually sell sheets and brochures, which are two documents you would rarely (if ever) want ligatures.

    I know that you can turn them off at the scale of the document, but I would rather start the program with them...

    You might be able to call it is lazy, but for the sake of argument I'll call her 'effective '.

    Thanks in advance!

    K

    Ligatures are designed to look better that ugly glyph collisions that are common, when they are not using, so I'm curious to know why you say you wouldn't sell them leaves or prospectus.

    Change the default value for new files to turn them off with no open files.

  • Broken in CS6 OpenType ligatures

    I have a font OpenType of "attached". I used it for years in CS4 (InDesign and Illustrator). I just upgraded to CS6 and some ligatures do not work, i.e. upper-case initial do not connect unless the first word on a line or after a comma or a period. This worked very well in CS4 works fine in Word I checked it on my Windows machine and Mac. friend the problem is the same on the whole. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thank you!

    Check the settings of substitution of relevant glyphs on the pallets the text-centric and also check the paragraph styles and all that...

  • Ligatures

    I have a code in a plugin InDesign that traverses all glyphs in a font and extracts for the glyph unicode value by calling glyphUtils->GlyphToCharacter(font, glyph, & userAreaChar)

    For most glyphs, it is a unicode value in telling me what character this glyph represents. I'm now working with the Devanagari fonts where there are many glyphs that are combinations of many characters unicode Devanagari Ligatures. Is it possible that I can do a reverse lookup to find out what unicode characters, when combined, produced this glyphID?

    I have to use glyphUtils->GetOTFAttribute and browse to find what combination of result of unicode characters in a particular glyphID? And what settings should I use to GetOTFAttribute get the ligature table?

  • Ligatures and the letter Q

    When you use the font 'Garamond Premier Pro', why did when I type a word that begins with the letter 'Q', the Q has a very long tail on this subject? For example, when you type the word 'Quality', the tail of the Q extends all the way to the "a". This would be a matter of ligature?

    No, it's called a 'background replacement '; It is working as expected. Disable it in the OpenType menu.

  • Deactivation of Ligatures in InDesign CS5!

    Hi, I want to know if there is a way to disable the entire document ligatures. Right now my team has to click on each character style to disable them. We have more than 80 300 + page book documents, so it is a pain! Ligatures are a problem when we export to Flashpaper... work pdfs very well. Help, please!

    In fashion, you'll see Advanced paragraph styles. If not go to Windows > styles > paragraph style...

    or press F11 to call a paragraph style window

    Go to edit your standard paragraph style or any other paragraph style you have.

    To the window title paragraph options style > basic character formats > uncheck Ligatures.

    Good luck.

  • Ligatures in Office 2010

    Office 2010 provides the ligatures for adapted the OTF-fonts. It works very well for Garamond Pro, Adobe Caslon Pro, Pro Chaparral, Kepler, myriad, Tekton Pro... But this isn't for Myriad Pro. Hotline of Microsoft responded, this could be a problem of the police of Adobe. Any idea? Are you able to reproduce the problem with Word 2010 and Minion Pro?

    I just tried using ligatures in 2010 to Word using Myriad Pro. Function of automatic replacement of Word 2010 has worked properly, its replacement by ligatures for ff and fi. Perhaps your copy of Myriad Pro is corrupt. Have you tried to see if the ligatures appear in another program, for example, in InDesign? Or, if it's just a special ligature that appear not, have you checked list of glyph of Myriad Pro If Myriad Pro contains special ligation?

    I try to use a font with ligatures (Adriane) in Fireworks CS3, but Fireworks seems to be cut off the top of the ffi ligature. It works fine in Photoshop CS3, this isn't a problem with the police. Someone else has had this problem in Fireworks and is there a solution?

    If you convert the part of the text into paths (text > convert to paths) that will fix it for you. There is no other real trouble I know unfortunately.
