location bar problem: cannot delete url

I have two URLS that keep reappearing in my address bar history. I erased the history several times and next time think I start Firefox (v7 & 8) they come back! I highlight, press the DELETE key and they go away but come back the next time Firefox refreshes or begins.

A URL is the store that sold the computer the other is simply a site I visited. I searched the registry and found nothing.

All other URLS can be deleted permanently until I enter them, but not these two!

Ideas?

Entries in the bar location drop-down list with a yellow star (blue on Mac) at the right end of the bookmarks and Scripture cannot be cleared from the location bar menu drop down with the delete key.

You can delete this an item marked with a bookmark that appear in the list, if you open this url in a tab and click on the yellow star in the address bar.

This will open the "Edit this bookmark" dialog box and you can click on the delete button to delete the bookmark if you want to delete such an entry marked with a bookmark.

One possible cause is a problem with the places.sqlite file that stores the bookmarks and history.

  • External hard drive problem (cannot delete files)

I have an external hard drive that I use Windows XP and I am now on Vista 64-bit. I have no problem to access the files on the disk, adding of new files or move files on the hard drive. However, I can't delete the files located on the hard drive. If I right click on the folder or file, the Remove option * literally * does not appear in the menu. I'm on the administrator account (only the account that was created).

The problem may be somewhere around this: if I right click on a file and goto Properties, read-only is enabled. If I disabled it and save, it acts like it is the application in the directory and all its subdirectories. When I return to the properties, it is again read only. I guess that the problem lies somewhere in the present.

Any suggestions? This has been an incredible pain for many months.

    Thank you

    Hello Yuhatn,

Thank you for posting.  Your problem is related to the file ownership.   You will need to change the permissions of the file/folder to be able to remove it.  You can do this by right-clicking on the file/folder and selecting the Security tab.  Once there, you can change the permissions of your account regarding this file/folder.  You may need to do this for all files in a folder to be able to delete the folder.  There is a 3rd party tools that will allow you to add this feature in the right click menu.

Cannot delete the file.  Says "not not found could not find this item check the location of this object and try again."

I got this file from my friend got sent - is a word document, I had on their computer.  So I tried to use Disk Cleanup to delete temporary files, temporary internet files and files program downloaded.  Does not work.

When I check the properties, there is no security tab so I can't transfer ownership in this way.

I don't want to experiment using the way of the transfer of ownership command prompt as the name of the file is several sentences long.  I can't rename it either, of course.

Windows 7, a week and I already have a stupid problem which has already lost an hour of my time.

What I did was to create a Notepad file that was empty and saved in the same location as the file that won't go away.  Once registered.  I click with the right button on the new file and rename the exact name as the file problem.  Don't forget to change the file extension (ex: .doc)

    ex file problem: word.doc

    new file: word.doc

as long as they match eachother exactly you should see the file problem disappear and once that's gone, you can delete the new file created.

Prior to joining Firefox4, when I type something in the box, Firefox would try to direct me to the location that I intended. But now with Firefox4, it doesn't happen again, and instead, it shows a result of research by the research of Babylon. What can I do about it? I've tried 'keyword.enabled', but it did not help.

The change between Firefox 3.6. * and Firefox 4 is how the location bar search. In Firefox 3.6, it uses Google search "search by name". With innovation by the name search, it performs a search on Google and if there is a clear match he will take you on the site, otherwise, it shows the Google search result. With Firefox 4 it performs just a search on Google, if you type in something that is not recognized as a URL.

To get the behavior of Firefox 3.6 on Firefox 4, you must change a hidden preference.

    1. Type of topic: config in the address bar and press on enter
    2. Accept the warning message that appears, you will be taken to a list of preferences
    3. Locate the preference keyword. URL, double-click it and change its value on the link below (keyword.enabled must be set to true to make it work)

  • Cannot delete a bookmark in "Unsorted Bookmarks". I tried "resetting" of firefox.

I can't delete individual "Unsorted Bookmarks." I have no problem to delete bookmarks from the Menu "Favorites".

I have a lot of these bookmarks that I can't remove. They just clutter up the drop down bookmarks menu and make it almost unusable.

No need to delete the entire category "Unsorted Bookmarks", although this would be an acceptable solution.

COR - el: thanks for the quick response. It has not solved the problem, but something that you said does not lead to a solution.

To reformulate the problem, there was a lot of bookmarks, which appeared in the drop-down menu that simply cannot be deleted.

I was able to delete 'normal' bookmarks by bringing their respective pages on the left by clicking on the star in "Edit this bookmark" which appears near the right end of the URL field and then clicking "Delete bookmark" from the context menu that appears. In this case, the star would be yellow and in the popup, the folder would be called bird "Bookmarks Menu".

Where I couldn't delete the bookmark, the star would be white and the record would be qualified bird "Unsorted Bookmarks."

It made no difference if I started firefox in safe or normal mode.

It had been years that I used the bookmarks bar and I had completely forgotten it existed. You mentioned it in your response, however, and I decided to try it. Bingo! In the sidebar, I could with the right Bookmark button and then click 'remove '. It worked even for bookmarks that I could not remove any other way.

I don't know if it is a bug in version 16 of firefox, or if somehow my bookmarks file had accumulated incorrect metadata for many years to update version.

In any case, for me, is a problem solved.

  • I can't remove a Location Bar Autocomplete entry

When you try to follow the steps to remove an item from the location bar AutoComplete list, as shown here:

    http://support.Mozilla.org/en-us/KB/search-your-bookmarks-history-and-tabs-awesome-bar#w_removing-AutoComplete-results

I encountered a problem interesting - the entry does not appear in the drop-down list, so I can't scroll to it, much less delete it.

This is the case. My University has a mail to mail server. < ermergerd! > .edu. Until yesterday, typing'm ' or 'ma' or... you get the idea... would be seized semiautomatic at this address. Randomly, today, he decided to "mail.google.com" as default. Which sucks, because I used to just type me ' and 'enter '. It's particularly annoying because I am sure that I never actually went (by typing in the address bar, at least) "mail.google.com" because that "gmail.com" is much less typing. It is not my favorites, and it does not appear in my story.

Completely erase my history isn't really an option in this case. It doesn't matter why. If the absolute answer is completely 'clear history', I'll learn to live with it. But I can hardly believe that there is not an alternative.

I have the screenshot proof, but apparently does not include. I'm sure that this would not help, because it shows as "mail.google.com" autocomplete, as ".edu e-mail. < homeworkislate >"is the first on the list, and 'mail.google.com' is not found.

    Thank you

I see you have Gmail Manager & installed Greasemonkey addons. Do you have one of them installed recently? One of them may be the cause. My money is on Gmail manager. In the case of Greasemonkey, maybe you added a userscript which adds sort mail.google.com to the address bar? You can try to disable Gmail Manager addon first then restart Firefox and see if mail.google.com is gone. Otherwise, disable Greasemonkey then restart Firefox and check again. There may be still one of your addons like google-No.-tracking-url , although I doubt that one is responsible. But you never know. You could also test with all the addons disabled.

To turn off all your addons:
