Lost many icons (XP) - have tried all incl. delete IconCache.db, but he does NOT get recreated. Corrupt Windows?

XP Home sp3.  Recently lost many images of icons on the desktop & start menu & toolbars, with just the generic icon displayed.  Fortunately have not lost any functional link (again), but very frustrating... and followed of many 'fixed' incl. TweakUI/repair, manual removal of all iconcache.db file then restart or adjust the color depth of or added to the register screen "Max Cached Icons" = 4096, etc... and Nothing has no effect OR even recreates the file iconcache.db.

Help! -Any new ideas?

Rocketeer2010,
Thanks for posting on the Microsoft answers Forum.  The first thing I would say (if you already haven't) is to run a scan for virus and malware scan on your system.

I've included a few websites for utilities that you can use to analyze your computer against viruses and spyware. I would like to use more than one, none of the products, which include every viral infection.
