Lost on Time Machine files

I'm looking to recover a file that was originally on backup TM historically. Older files disappear for good, or can they be recovered?

Thank you

Once a file is deleted from the backup you can not restore it.

Not without a huge amount of effort and basically not if the TM backup is on Time Capsule or other network location.

If you have deleted the Mac file. It will be deleted from the backup at some point... but it's a complex algorithm... This gives a longer period for the files that were there for a long time. If you deleted the file directly from the TM backup then it went, unless you want to use a tool of recovery immediately... If you continued to make backups so you can write well enough off the coast of this file.

At the end of my wits. This is the second time that this has happened. After you erase and reformat my hard drive, restore partition I restored a backup of all my files that had been made a few days earlier Time machine. It LOOKED as if all went well, but now I find that one of my Albums, which had well over 150 photos, or iPhoto has only managed to restore 14 of these photos. And this is the most important. As I say, it happened the last time I did this kind of restoration as well.

After I did the Time Machine in the system restore, I was prompted to rebuild the iPhoto database and did, and I was also invited to "import" all of my many boxes to the letters and their content in the mail. So far, it seems that IT worked, but as with iPhoto, most of whose albums DID restore entirely, or at least seem to have done, I fear that there are losses latent God knows where.

I pray that someone can explain to me how this could occur and how to fix it.

In addition, why in the categories among which I must choose are there no category for Time Machine?

Update: some research, the first under the spotlight by a file name the closest to one of the 14 who in the appropriate album, and then, after trying manually drag some of those in the album and being rejected because he claimed that the pictures were already in the iPhoto library, I opened all of the photos in the photo library and finally understood how to sort them by title. And there were all these «lost photos» Try and then drag them into the appropriate album, I have had no joy. It simply wouldn't do. So, I created a new album without title and was able to pass all these photos in this one and then re-name-the.

So, obviously, it is random random sort by Time Machine, put pictures in their albums proper during a restore. Does anyone have an explanation of why this would be the case? If I didn't have a photo of survivor in the game with a title to be used as a means of rallying defined overall in the undifferentiated photo album, I would have needed hours and hours to track them all, and if I had not known instantly that many disappeared after restore, this album, I would never have known even to go look for them.

Of course, one would expect time Machine to do what it is supposed to do in a situation like this?

  • How can I reduce the size of the security time machine file

Saving file of my macbook air is to get half of the capacity of the hard drive on my time capsule. I would rather not do it again, but I need to go back five years. I would be sufficient to return two or three years.

But how to delete a few years to free up space on my drive hard time capsule?

Time Machine is not designed to do what you want. It can be done, but it is a very long, tedious and frankly dangerous process relating to remove manually every old date backup and then using the Terminal for "compact" the Time Capsule disk commands so that it accurately displays the amount of free space available on the Time Capsule.

Not recommended for most users. If you want to try when even, have a look at this article to support just below... the box rose in particular.  Terminal is an extremely dangerous place unless you know exactly what you are doing and understand basic programming commands.

My advice would be to continue to use the time Capsule until he was 80 to 90 percent complete. At this time, add a USB to the Capsule and archive all backups on the Time Capsule on the USB... If you want to go back and pick up an old file.

Then, clear the Time Capsule disk and start over.

  • Copy the old Time Machine files to the new disk TM

Sorry people, I have to ask two (related) questions:

    (1) I have a WD My Passport for Mac drive connected to an Airport Extreme and 2 Macs use for backup via Time Machine. Now, the disk is full. I bought a WD My Book for Mac drive with a capacity of 4 TB and am ready to go.

Question: can I copy the old files of Time Machine on my new book?

    (2) until now 2 different Macs used the My Passport as a Time Machine drive with no problems.

Question: Should I partition the new drive (My Book) and every Mac uses its own partition as Time Machine or can proceed us as is?

Thank you very much for your help!

Question: can I copy the old files of Time Machine on my new book?

Yes you can, but there is a lot of work, a little complicated, time consuming and not worth the effort for most users.  The main reasons for this are...

    (1) the older backups will take a good amount of space on the new drive, limiting the space on the disk again.

    (2) Time Machine backups for the old files will continue... it will make a new copy of every Mac and then go forward again with incremental backups.

A better plan would be to keep the old drive on hand for a few months, in which case you need to go back and look for a file. After a few months, you will have a beautiful story from backup to the new hard drive and no need of older backups so you can remove the old disk and keep around as a spare part or use it for other purposes.

Question: Should I partition the new drive (My Book) and every Mac uses its own partition as Time Machine or can proceed us as is?

While you can partition the drive and save each Mac to a separate partition if you wish, there is really no need to do this since Time Machine will automatically create separate for each Mac backup files.

  • Time Machine - I have masses of free space, but Time Machine keeps deleting old files - why?

Time Machine - I have masses of space free (about 2.5 TB) but time machine keeps deleting files of more than nine months. Is there a parameter limiting that I don't know?  My backup drive is a 4 start Drobo drive.  I have everything works fine except this irritating issue.  Any ideas out there?

    Hello Mike Oscar.

I hope that I am able to help you with your concern today. If I understand you correctly, in Time Machine, files of more than 9 months are deleted. Time Machine to save space. I'm not sure if Apple is allowing us to extend this period to 12 months or even 16 months, but it would be a great recommendation. I hope I could help you with your concern.

  • Requests that are lost during the restoration of time machine

For example, recently my laptop (MacBookPro7, 1.) Intel Core 2 Duo. 2.4 GHz. memory to 6 GB) came up with a message saying to upgrade to el capitan, and after some research to see if my computer were compatible (OS X 10.6.8) I've updated. However, I found that many things had changed in ways that I didn't like as well as my laptop is slow. So I watched it come back back and followed the instructions of restoration (command-R, choose the time machine backup, etc.). Unfortunately since doing so, I lost many of my applications provided with the computer, and I can not find them even in the applications folder (Calculator, preferences system, overview and a few others), I have also noticed that when I try to access the time machine preferences or system preferences they come in the form of files called content and there is no way to access it.

If anyone knows how I can find my apps or even be able to access the settings, it would be much appreciated. I'm too scared to try redownload things where it makes things worse. However, I tried to go back and restore from time machine once again, but after having tried several times in vain to get to the right section again once I gave up.

  • A few bookmarks do not show so I asked to restore (in the menu bookmark)-now all disappeared. What files are stored bookmarks in (in the system) so I can use time machine to restore from an earlier date?

I do a lot of work on the web and I have a ton of bookmarks that I use to maintain sites. I lost all!

I tried to install a new copy of the program and restore the file Mozilla from the library to the user (in time machine), but all I have is a white space where was the bookmarks bar! I also have a problem trying to re-enter manually all bookmarks. I can open the bookmark drop down, but I can't save all bookmarks. Firefox don't mark all new pages. I still all the passwords in the preferences if I don't want to install a new copy of the program and lose these.

Are there other system files that Firefox uses that I can restore the backup to solve the problem?
I have a Mac Pro and I am OSX 10.6.4
I have used Firefox for years and never had a problem before.
    Can anyone help - please?

This may be a problem with the places.sqlite file that stores the bookmarks and history.

  • Time Machine does not restore files in numbers

I just tried to restore a file of numbers with Time Machine. I had just edited and saved.  But then I realized that I had made a mistake.  So I wanted the version that I had for a few months before.

But even if I went back several weeks, when I clicked on restore, I got was the last version. This precedent has lost.

Is this a problem with the figures?  Or a time in El Capitan problem Machine?  (And I can solve it?)

  • I need a few files to restore from a time machine backup to a different MacBook Pro that is connected to the same network

Hi, I recently "lost" my MacBook Pro because of water damage.  Fortunately, I've been using time Machine\Capsule and I have a MacBook Pro that is connected to the same network/device.  I need to restore a few files in the backup TM of the computer 'lost' on computer 'work '.  I was able to 'Browse' the other TM backup (click the icon TM plus the button 'Alt').  The Web browsing is extremely slow (took about an hour to break down / find the file on the network).  However, I tried to copy the file and I get errors of the alias.   Please advise me on what I am doing wrong.

  • Temporary files of Time Machine

Had some problems with temporary files of Time Machine, which fills my boot drive with over 400 GB of files.

I tried the command "sudo tmutil local disable", restart the mac, and then the command 'sudo tmutil enablelocal' but nothing happened.

Then after trying more than those I lost the file '. '. MobileBackups' which I can't see from the finder by Go-> go to folder-> ".» MobileBackups"not through terminal.

I also launched the drive and the authorization of repairs without success.

How can I delete these files now?

    Hello NowApple,

I understand that you are having problems with the removal of the Local snapshot that belongs to your time Machine upwards. It's something that you can get rid of by disabling Time Machine. When you turn that off, this disabled the Local Snapshot function and it is removed from your Mac. When you turn back the Time Machine, is activated again. Take a look at the information below for more details.

  • Time Machine hangs on the Application file that I deleted

    Hello:

I'm doing a new installation on my parents computer because Flash Player was completely broken somehow. I can't uninstall or update.

This isn't my problem right away well. Their backup disk was on his last breath so that I had to get a new and Time Machine hangs first various office applications, which I excluded, now it's of iDVD. I tried that it excludes everything first, but Time Machine has always tried to save. Given that my parents don't use it and it is no longer supported then I thought to uninstall. I deleted the program and demand corresponding is support the file and did a search in the Finder for all of the remaining files. No, zip.

However, Time machine is still backing up files which I can't find for the life of me. He would make iDVD themes 1, 2, 3, etc. I can't exclude in Time Machine because he's not here. I deleted the partial backups each time and it keeps immediately suspended 19,25 GB on iDVD.

Please, Please help. I spent a ridiculous amount of time is already and should just get this done.

I look forward to all points of view.
