I am struggling with a computer, try to empty the trash with 1million 300,000 Time machine backup files. It runs for two days now and won't install. At this rate, I'll need a week before my computer becomes viable. I don't feel able to go to the Terminal to do the trick. Also at this point, I'm afraid to stop the process again... Backups on an external drive of pigs 400 GB on my drive hard imac... I have so little room to work right now. I deleted some 200,000 files already yet the storage on my imac HD has not moved. I have a new computer to come next week so I'm wondering if I'll just reformat my entire hd in my imac to solve this problem... Any ideas?

You do all this in the Finder?

Time Machine has to delete the files from the user interface, normally "browsing Time Machine backup", navigate to the desired folder, and select the option "delete all backups of...» ». This is the approved way that should work.

If you are manually dragging the items in the trash of in a Time Machine backup, it can choke. Time Machine stores data with many levels of access control permissions & Finder seems to have difficulties to remove to empty the trash. In fact, I think that the TM drive has limits to prevent normal users to change data on this disk.

Personally, I think your safest option is to abandon the process, restart, erase and reformat the Time Machine drive. Who will lose all history backups but again in a clean condition seems to be better than trying to manually prune the Time Machine data. Time Machine removes old backups when it is full - so you shouldn't really need to intervene like this anyway.

Wait and see if anyone has a better idea.

P.S., each disk has its own "basket", so doing drag items should not fill your Mac startup disk. Maybe the operating system is out of memory, try to process all the files, exit other applications & see if that changes anything, you may have to wait just if you want to avoid to abandon the process.

  • Time Machine error message wants to delete all backups

Is there a way to delete older backups? I am able to see them in my time Machine, but I get this error when I try to save "Time Machine has conducted an audit of your backups on"PersonalCloud". Is it possible to keep the information contained in the previous backups?

N ° you have lost all your backups.

A device third-party network attached storage (NAS) or a router is unsuitable for use with Time Machine, especially if it's your only backup. I know that's not what you want to hear. I know that Time Machine accepts the device as a backup destination. I know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and I also know that it usually seems to work. Except when you are trying to restore and find that you can't.

Apple has published a specification for network devices that works with Time Machine. No third party provider, AFAIK, does meet this specification. They all use the application of "Netatalk" incomplete, obsolete Apple Filing Protocol.

Apple does not endorse any device third-party network for use with Time Machine. See this support article.

Network backup, use as destination an Apple Time Capsule or an external storage device connected to another Mac or a 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only 802.11ac base stations support time Machine, not older model.

Otherwise, use Time Machine at all. There are other ways to save, although none of them are nowhere near as effective or as well integrated with OS X. I don't have a specific recommendation.

If you are determined to continue to use the device with Time Machine, your only remedy for any resulting problem is the manufacturer (who will blame Apple, neither you nor anyone else but herself.)

  • Mailing address: restore from time machine sent messages

Recently, I changed my work for a long time to POP IMAP email account.  While I made sure that I have archived all incoming messages, I didn't "Sent" messages would be affected.  They seem to have disappeared.

Everything must have been saved on Time Machine.  What is the best way to restore old items sent, so I can ideally their search for Mail?  Can I put them in a sent items folder, so I can get all my accounts at the same time?

As I check iMap messages to extract the server, do I need to archive messages sent at the same time?  Or can I leave them in my combined "sent" folder.

  • Sync iPhone with the new HD on Mac after restoring from Time Machine

I tried this announcement yesterday, but got into a tangle with my iPhone on which I was striking and finished with two fragmentary positions. I apologize and try again.

My Mac mini hard drive started fail and I'll have a new one (a solid state), actually installed by an authorized service center of Apple. When I get home I'm going to restore the contents of a Time Machine backup.

My question is this: I sync my Mac with my iPhone via iCloud. For a few days while my Mac mini has been out of action, I had to add some dates to the calendar on my phone. When I restored the content of my Mac HD and I connect to the Internet, synchronization starts automatically. How can I make sure that it is the calendar which is synced phone to Mac and not vice versa?

It should synchronize icloud to Mac because the update to iCloud is more recent. It would be the same that do not turn on your computer for a few days.

  • Time Machine: When can I delete?

Time Machine seems to be considered as unlimited external HARD drive...

I started using TM a few months previously and made my drive external HARD quickly became crowded.

My understanding is that TM will be in safeguarding the principle that what has changed since the last backup.  However, I noticed that there is a list of all the previous backups.  Now, at some point, I need to delete stuff for free space!... If I delete the backups say, keeping just the last two (according to the dates appearing), am I deleting stuff to the "full" backup (i.e.: the last backups didn't need to backup stuff?) Or is the program smart enough to copy previous backups?

I have a 1 TB of HARD drive on my MBP, not those newer "128 or 256 GB", then Yes: there is trick to back up here...

    Thank you
    Rob

"If a Time Machine destination is full so that a new backup cannot be stored, it starts to delete older backups to free up space. For example, if you first activated Time Machine in 2013, and the disk is full today, these first backups from 2013 will begin to disappear.

It is worth noting that Time Machine will not tell you when this happens, unless you select to be told by opening system preferences, click on the Time Machine, by clicking on the Options button, and put a tick in the box head notify after old backups are deleted. »

TM will automatically use hourly backups for the past 24 hours, daily backups for the month past and weekly for the past few months a whole. Older backups are deleted when your backup drive is full.

  • Backups Time Machine very slow on 2015 MacBook Air

Associated with a topic of discussion between a few days ago (two MacBooks, 10.11.4, a fast Time Machine backup and a very slow), I start a new topic with new information that seem to show it is a problem more general and not related to Time Machine networks.

    Here's the situation:

    • A 2015 MacBook Air, 10.11.4, 8 GB / 512 GB, has extremely slow performance of backup Time Machine, taking 40 hours for the first 300 GB backup and incremental backups for a long time as well
    • TM performance is essentially the same whether on the network (wired Ethernet) or a USB3 external disk
    • When you back up to disk USB3, I confirmed that the information system shows that the port is configured as USB3, not USB2 (nothing else is plugged into the USB port)
    • Tests of bandwidth I/O gross (using dd and iperf) show no problem; the network reached 110 MB/s bandwidth, written network managed at 50 Mbps, external USB3 HD written work at 40-50 MB/s (write hard drive speed limit)
    • 3 other Macs of various ages from 2009-2014 on the same network have no problem at all do backups Time Machine Network; a backup complete first on a 2011 MacBook Pro 500 GB takes 5 hours or more than 10 x faster than the MBA problem
    • Time machine network uses a Linux server running the latest Debian and Netatalk 3.1.8 and the connection is via a USB3/Gigabit adapter, no WiFi, and iperf tests with this arrangement shows 900 MB/s of throughput of the server.  In all cases, the Time Machine and external time Machine Network USB HD have the same symptoms.
    • The problem with MacBook Air is configured the same as the MacBook Pro 2011, which she replaced "daily driver", possible
    • This problem was shown by the MBA since his unboxing conversion, taking 20 hours for his first backup once Setup initially.  Incremental backups now take several hours, leading to interrupted incremental backups and, I believe, databases corrupted backup triggers new full backups that take today the 40 hours.

Using Terminal Server and iostat, Console, etc, I see that there is significant activity e/s for the backup drive on the order of 20 to 40 MB/s for long periods on the MBA during the TM backup, but during that time the average declared backup size as shown in the window in the console and TM is growing by only 5 GB/hour.  This occur even if the backup will the external drive or a network drive. This seems to mean that the I/O bandwidth to and from the disk hard external, only 1/600 contributes to the progress of the backup.  I am sure that there is overload of certain checks and other tasks, but not to a 600-to-1 ratio.

I tried to disable the limitation of the I/O of low priority as shown here: http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/212537/time-machine-ridiculously-slow-a close-el-capitan-upgrade, that helps a bit (maybe 20-30%), but not by a factor of 10 for others.

I have gone through a number of the Time Machine of Pondini troubleshooting steps, but he found nothing corresponding to these symptoms.

The only thing I can conclude is that Time Machine, the application or configuration, on this specific MBA, is down. (A single thought that I wrote this to the top that I have not tried: the MBA and the time MBP running VMware Fusion and have a file of 50 + GB VM; on the MBA that is not excluded from TM backups while on the MBP is)

Does anyone have advice on what to watch next?  In all cases, only one key would be why it seems that only 0.16% of all the bandwidth I/O to the backup drive seems to be actual data backup.

Once again, three other Macs, all running the same 10.11.4, back to the Time Machine Server perfectly and have for years.  Only this new MBA glue as broken out, either to a network drive or an external hard drive USB3.

(A single thought that I wrote this to the top that I have not tried: the MBA and the time MBP running VMware Fusion and have a file of 50 + GB VM; on the MBA that is not excluded from TM backups while on the MBP is)

What happens when you exclude it as the MBP?

  • Clone of Time machine backup to a new drive?

I'm trying to help out a new Mac. Before, I had two back ups of all my data: on the hard drive of my old iMac and my external time machine backup disk. Long story, but during the process of troubleshooting using AppleCare support, my iMac has been cleared. Now, I have only the Time Machine external backup.

I bought a new drive for Time Machine external backup on my new Mac. I am very very afraid of something bad happens to my old Time Machine backup during the troubleshooting process. My question is, is there a way to clone back to the top of my old drive time machine to the new, so I once more two copies?  If something happens to my old time machine up during this process of troubleshooting, I won't lose all my files.

I'm not familiar with the Time Machine backups, and even if they need to be cloned since that they are not bootable backups.  The following link is dated but maybe having the relevant documents:

I am running OS X Lion 10.7.5 on my Mac Mini in 2011.  I recently had Melrose Mac increase its 16 MB RAM and HD sound internal to a 2 TB drive and they have cloned my original data and restored on the new drive.

Then, I partitioned the drive and installed El Capitan, Yosemite, and Snow Leopard on each of these partitions.  Who are all the Mac OS X extended (journaled).  Each partition correctly starts and runs.

Then, I took my LaCie 2 Bay drive, with 1 t readers in each Bay, wiped and set up as 'Fast' while it will be seen as a 2 t drive and chose this drive for Time Machine in Leo.  This disc is also Mac OS X extended (journaled).

About halfway through the first backup (350 GB), I get the following message from Time Machine; now it happens more quickly:

And here it is recreated Time Machine in system preferences:

I followed the instructions several times using repair in the disk on the primary drive of LaCie and its partitin utility, but it does not report errors.  Then the first Time Machine backup will fail again about half way through.

I've been reviewing Pondini suggestions, but they do not cover this specific message and they do not seem to find the problem.

    Any thoughts?

Moderators, please move this to the subheading appropriate; as Mac OS X Lion/Time Machine and remove this message.  Thank you.

  • Time Machine don't prune the old El Capitan backups and works out of space and "backup fails.

With the help of El Capitan 10.11.1, I noticed a change in behavior with the handling of the time Machine of large files, specifically the files of virtual disk VMWare Fusion (about 50 large concerts).  After a few weeks of use of fusion VM virtual machine, Time Machine gives an error where it ran out of space and "backup failed."

I had the same problem occur on a second iMac that I own.

I reformatted my external drive for Time Machine and started fresh, but after a few weeks, I got the same error again.  It seems that Time Machine is not the size or remove older backups of VMware virtual disk to provide a space for the new.

Previous versions of Mac OS X and Time Machine had no problem with the backup of large files such as these.

Has anyone else noticed "backup failed" message with Time Machine on El Capitan?  I know that I can exclude the disk virtual VMware backup, but that defeats the entire purpose of Time Machine backups.  Any suggestions?

Time Machine automatically deletes older snapshots to make room for the new. If your backup history is shorter than expected, it may be because you want to save one or more large files frequently.

Software virtualization VMware, Parallels or VirtualBox creates a large virtual disk container that is constantly evolving. It will not be saved at all while the virtual machine running, and at other times it must be saved each Time Machine performance. Who fills up quickly any backup destination.

You must exclude files from virtual drive of your Time Machine backups. To do this, click the Options button in the Time Machine preferences window. You can also do this to virtualization, application settings. Back up the files on the virtual disk within the comments system, using a native backup application.

A compromise solution is to create a 'snapshot' of the virtual machine in the virtualization software (not a Time Machine snapshot.) This will give you a single large file that never changes and only has to be saved once. All future changes will be stored in a file that is much smaller initially, but will grow over time. You must always exclude this backup TM file. If you need to restore the computer virtual of Time Machine, you will have a working configuration, which will be easy for you to restore the rest of the data in the system of comments.
