Mac Mini G4 (with Airport) as a server?

Hi all

I am new to this site and pretty new in the Mac world, and so I'm hoping to get help.

I look and have a lot of video content, usually via an LG Smart TV or my iPad (using airplay) before the season holiday and for the last few years I had all my content stored on a 1 to Iomega disk (4 or 5 years) However, for Christmas, I received a Station sinology drive NAS that I put 3 2 TB Western Digital red. In the last two days I've been setting up a Plex account and it seams to work ok. However, if I play the files on the TV via my amazon fire stick that it dampens a lot - I suspect it's because synology NAS has insufficient processor speed to deliver the stream fast enough on television.

Then... my thought is that I need a file on a network server (but I don't want to spend too much money) I as a woman who likes to think (especially my COMPUTER stuff) to be discreet and hidden away.

In the House at the moment, we have 2 MacBook Airs, 4 iPad, IPhone 4 and a Windows 10 laptop (PC has no need to access the NAS or a potential server)

I have a few questions:

-Could you a Mac Mini G4 at low cost (the later model with the wireless capability) be used as a server (if I don't have the wireless version, I could put it next to the modem / router (it's a Virgin Superhub - NETGEAR VMDG480 I believe)-is this a better option?)

If the answer is Yes and the Mac Mini can be used to do this work...

-Can he work Plex and media files continue to be accommodated on the NAS

-Once implemented can I use my MacBook to connect to the server and manage (i.e. must not be a keyboard, monitor, etc.)

-Will what operating system take

I have a little experience in configuring servers based on PC but that was a few years ago and things have changed since that time - more Mac seems to be somewhat different, so I would really appreciate help everything / all.

Steve

If the g4 as the old PowerPC CPU Intel version, you probably won't find as much work

Plex media and Sin is no problem

Remote desktop of course remote connection and vnc and teamviewer which would make it a possible

What operating system would be up to the apps you will implement requirements

A server is usually just a computer on which to run programs that are used by others on a network

  • Mail of the Mac Mini, iMac with the migration wizard

I have a mac mini (2014 - El Capitan) that I have used for some time now and I have many mailboxes (30 +) with many stored messages (100s maybe 1000s).

I recently picked up a 2011 27 iMac which is running OS X Sierra Final Release Candidate due to vision problems.

Both units are working well but I would like to transfer my boxes to the letters, messages, and the account settings from the Mac Mini to the iMac using Migration Assistant to take advantage of the larger screen.

Am I able to select only the data for e-mail (boxes letters, messages and settings) to transfer somewhere in the Migration Wizard interface or will it just to start the transfer of all?

I use iCloud for note, calendars and contacts, but prefer not to use for e-mail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The simplest option would be to use Time Machine to restore your data.

    Other Options:

You can export the folders you want to transfer the mini using export of Mail under mailbox function in the Menu bar > export a mailbox... Drag to the folder on the desktop on the new iMac and import in Mail. File > import boxes mailbox...

You can also use a third-party application, Emailchemy to export your Mail on the mini and pull only the folders you want and import. If you have many files, it would be a faster option.

    http://www.weirdkid.com/products/emailchemy/

Otherwise, you could drag on the whole Mail > V3 folder let Sierra update data. This assumes that you have already started using Mail to Sierra.

You don't have to use iCloud email to use Apple Mail. I strongly suggest that you use IMAP to service what ever you choose to use.  Comcast, Yahoo, Gmail, AOL, Hotmail (other)

  • Mini TiVo with airport express

My question is about the tivo, the Airport express and the extreme of the AC.  have the romaio standard tivo in my room and the mini in the other room about 25 feet, with thick walls about 7 feet.  the mini is to cut the audio and the video of course.  If the research online, wanting to know the best solution.  If the connections are such:

    1st room:

Extremes of AP connected to the modem

romaio connected by ethernet to AP extreme

    2nd room:

AP express connected by ethernet to tivo mini

Deck AP express under the name "extended" to the extreme

bridge over the 2.4 ghz network

so the question is whether to 'extend' or 'join' the network?

or the other bridge then on the 2.4 ghz or 5 GHz?

all the details, let me know

    There is no significant difference.

so the question is whether to 'extend' or 'join' the network?

or the other bridge then on the 2.4 ghz or 5 GHz?

The question is fair level of signal and bandwidth.

It is difficult to get the numbers now, as the utility v6 airport is no longer a toy only utility is to say a tool. As the use of a hammer plastic actually hammer in nails.

Try to get the speed of connection... in v6, you roll your pointer over the connection. As thus.

I have two gen5 connected AE as extend wireless... It did not work with long connection so I moved to the extreme a few feet from the other device. They are now about 4' apart.

The connection now shows 195 MB/s, but you need to playback during the actual file transfer. It will go down considerably the work.

If you can get a machine more old computer or windows and install the utility 5.6 you will get much more information.

Links are not the same from one end to... Although here, it works fine. As I had before that connection showed ok one end but much poorer on the other... This info is now impossible to obtain in utility v6.

25 ft away, with thick walls about 7 feet.

I'm sure that the walls are 7 thick inches rather than 7feet.

But everything depends on the construction and the number of walls.

Light framing lumber and Sheetrock (rockboard?) have fairly low resistance wireless.

Brick or concrete walls have a lot of resistance wireless... you must use ethernet or adapters EOP.

  • 6 ESXi on Mac mini 2012 Yosemite does not start

    Hello

im a Mac mini running with ESXi 6 2012. I create a virtual machine to run Yosemite. On my Mac, VMware Fusion 7.1.1 it executed. When I download on my ESXi server, it fails to start and stay on point. When I use the verbose boot, he tell me missing bluetooth.

    Can anyone help?

    Greetings

Hi demiyo and welcome to the VMware communities!

There is a known issue with the 'Upload on server' function in Fusion 7 when used with virtual machines in Mac OS X, which causes the loss of one of the necessary configuration options for Mac OS X virtual machines run.  The symptom is that the virtual machine appears to hang when starting, never getting to the login screen.

    To work around the problem:

    • Power off the virtual machine.
    • Open a session shell ESXi (if it is not already selected, use the ESXi console Troubleshooting Options section to allow the ESXi Shell or SSH).
    • Change directory to the virtual machine (/ vmfs/volumes/datastore1 /...).
    • Edit the virtual machine configuration file to add the following line:

    SMC. Present = 'TRUE '.

    • Quit the editor and the power on the virtual machine.  It should now boot successfully.

    See you soon,.

  • Mac Mini 2012 reset to the Mavericks?

I would do a factory reset my Mac mini, but with the Mavericks. I'll keep the computer, I just want to make a radical spring cleaning. Is this possible? I want to mainly use the Mini now for music creation (MIDI and transcribe the partitions with Musescore).

If you updated to the Mavericks in the past, then go to the Mac App Store and download the installer of Mavericks. Do USB install using media

    http://liondiskmaker.com/

and then boot from the USB media and format/erase the startup disk and install the Mavericks

If the Mac can with the Mavericks, then try to start on the Internet and then recovery format/erase and install the Mavericks through the recovery of the Internet

You may be able to force your Mac to boot into Recovery Internet by pressing Command + Option + R at startup.

  • Can I install Snow Leopard on a Mac Mini 2008

    Hello.

I have a Mac Mini 2008 with the info printed on the envelope:

    Mini Mac 2.53/2X2G/320/SDI/AP/BT

    Model no. A1283 2008

I tried to install Snow Leopard using the gray installation disc supplied with my Macbook Pro.

It didn't work, probably because the drive is linked to my MBP (I guess).

So now I think ordering setup of Snow Leopard on the Apple store instead:
    http://www.Apple.com/shop/product/MC573Z/A/Mac-OS-x-106-Snow-Leopard

But I'm not 100% sure if the previous failure, I had was really just because of the gray drive or the Mac Mini 2008 does not support Snow Leopard.

Hope someone can give me the answer, so I'm not an unnecessary purchase.

    Thank you!

This is because the gray disc is specific to your model of MacBook Pro. Any Mac that has an Intel processor, at least 1 GB of RAM and running 10.4 or 10.5 can run 10.6.

  • Can I connect my Mac Mini 2011 my end of 2014 Mac Mini using Thunderbold cable to double the RAM?

My Mac Mini end of 2014 cannot add everything exceeds 8 GB RAM cable.

I don't know why Mac was given the opportunity to add more RAM as applications become more and more wide and double my RAM will allow me to run applications of additional third party all in post processing my images.

I have my Mac Mini 2011 with a Thunderbolt Plug and a delay in 2014 with 2 Sockets Thunderbolt

I just want to connect two computers so that I can use 8 + 8 = 16 GB of RAM for photography post-processing.

Buy everything just a Thunderbolt Apple cable to connect two computers and be speed up along?

I'll probably have to update the old OS Mini at El Capitan

    Thank you!

No. but you can connect both via TB for quick file sharing

  • Advice from rMBP to Mac Mini

    Hello

Looking for reviews, I hope other people who have some experience. I will try to keep things simple.

I am a photographer who bought a 2104 13.3 "rMBP refurbished Apple 5 months ago. It was a nice affair. Although I realize that I'm not happy with this configuration, due to the glossy screen, the size of 13 "limits, fixed only a 128 GB SSD and 8 GB of RAM. I could change the SSD, but I don't want Sub Applecare.

I was considering getting a Mac Mini opportunity, end 2012 model. I would setup 16 GB of RAM and a 500 GB SSD. And the purchase of a screen monitor mast 25 ". I'll probably opt for the i5 model based on cost.

My question is I notice a big difference in performance if I move to the Mac Mini? I'll be in Photoshop for post-processing of images, nothing too intensive.

I know that my other option is to just get the external monitor and use it with the rMBP, but I would be still limited with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB SSD. In addition, I have more a need for portability.

Any notice or related experience would be appreciated.

I have a rMBP of end-2012 (8 GB of RAM, 256 GB flash drive) and a couple of end-2012 Mac mini (both with 8GB RAM, 120 GB SSD and HDD to 500 GB). The Minis are used as servers, but to be honest, I do not see or feel a difference between the performance of the Minis and rMBP.

I think that the fact that you would go 16 GB of RAM and 500 GB SSD on the Mini should provide some improvements in the work you do.

  • Cloning of a Mac mini with application Server

We bought a condo in Florida and I want to my server it doubles. I use Mac mini (2 different models) with 2 drives external (one for Time Machine backups) and one for data.

What is the best way to install the Apple Server on Florida related to the Mac mini so I don't have to install it from scratch?

Yesterday I tried (in vain) to use the Migration Wizard to move all of my Mac mini to the Florida-bound one. Can I use 3rd party app "Carbon Copy Cloner" instead?

Any recommendations on how to configure the 2nd server would be appreciated.

The replication server is a relatively trivial process and can be accomplished by using disk utility.  However, the source drive and the destination drive should not be active at the time of cloning.  For example, you have Master Mini and you want to be replicated on Mini replica.  The best way to do it with the included tools must start Master Mini from another disk that contains an operating system to start.  Then start the Mini replica in target disk mode and connect it to the Mini Master (already started from another drive).  Disk utility to clone the Master disk on the drive of replica.

Ah, but cloning is the easy part.  The question I have for you is that you really want an exact replica?  The reason why I ask, is that your current server should have a name and a fully qualified domain name.  It's server.pauljohnson.com and it has a 10.0.0.10 IP address.  If you clone the device to another Mac, there will also be a name of server.pauljohnson.com and it has a 10.0.0.10 IP.  If two of your networks are configured on the 10.0.0.0/24 subnet then you won't be able to connect to each other.  Similarly, if you depend on external access to devices and must comply with DNS, then you can only point to one of the servers, unless you have a form of installation program to distribute the load between the two locations of load balancing.

What services run you on the servers other than the Server Time Machine?  Do you intend to have a VPN tunnel between the two institutions?  If you use Open Directory, and DNS, you can configure master and replicas of the two services.  Of course, this should only be done with a tunnel VPN in place I would not recommend exposing these services to the internet.

Then await you replicate data also?

Start with a list of services and a list of expectations about how you want client machines work when moving from one place to another.

  • I use Foxfire that my server with my Mac 'Mini' but you can not download the Foxfire current upgrade.

Several months ago, I bought the Mac Mini desktop computer and use Foxfire as my server. I wonder constantly update my Foxfire, but am not allowed to connect to the Foxfire server even if I'm already connected. What is my solution?

If he has problems with the update or the permissions then simpler is to download the full version and trash the version currently installed to do a clean install of the new version.

Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the file on the desktop disk image (dmg)

    • Trash the present application Firefox to do a clean (re-) install
    • Install the new version you downloaded

Your profile data is stored in the Firefox profile folder, so you will not lose your bookmarks and other personal data if you uninstall and (re) install Firefox.
