MacBook Air external NTFS drive reading

HI, this is my first post.

My wife has a MacBook Air 13 "display mid 2013 running Yosemite OSX v 10.10.5

I'm trying to read and then copy the files from a NTFS formatted drive that I use on my Win7 machine. I'm trying to transfer files from the PC to the Mac.

I can see the player in the utility tool drive of Mac but that you do not see the drive in Finder. I think I have the configuration of disk NTFS (made in Windows) share anyone can change the disc.

I saw in several places that Yosemite be at least able to read NTFS files. I'm not trying to write to the disk, only to read.

Any suggestions? I would stay with NTFS (compared to exFAT) for purposes of reliability if possible.

Thank you.

Check the settings on the sidebar of the Finder preferences and general tabs. If they are configured properly (a shared drive on a network will be a connected server), try to fix the PC.

To connect to a network drive, use the connection to the server command in the Finder menu go.

I'm trying to find a solution to take a USB HD in a spacing classified environment / air.  If I can make the drive read-only (like I gave him that I need to copy on these machines), then the Agency will probably approve the device.  I can't use DVDs that data are 30 + GB in size.

    Hey there, capsfanva!

Welcome to the communities of Apple Support! It seems you need to set permissions on an external USB drive or hard drive. These permissions setting is a great way to improve the security and privacy of these elements. You've come to the right place and you will find the answer below. You must connect the device to your computer and follow these steps:

  • MacBook Air missing hard drive space

I noticed that the free space on the hard drive on my Macbook Air has been quickly disappear even if I had not been adding lots of new files, certainly not enough to account for the 10s of gigabytes that disappeared last week. I cleaned it of useless media files, which gives him another 20 GB of space. The status bar it reflects accurately at first, but when I started the computer this morning, it had lost 30 GB of this adjustment.

After you run WhatSize DaisyDisk, I see that they have both claim that my Air uses Go 296, which is in agreement with the about this Mac, but when you look at the size of the actual folders, there is no way that they measure is added to this amount.

Using Get Info, I got the following:

    14.43 applications gb

    Users 42,45

    System of 7.77

    Library of 8.95

That all adds up to about 74 GB of used space. WhatSize actually gives me different numbers. Where in the world are the other 220 or so lack of gbs? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

(Note: although I typed this out, I noticed that about 8 GB of free space have disappeared in the status bar)

Here are a few screenshots of WhatSize and disk utility. Of THE claims that 'other' includes 283 GB, but I can't understand what is included in whatever measure it as 'other '.

    1. see Lion-Lion/mountain/storage of the Mavericks display.

    2. you can remove the data from your file except for the folder/Home/Library /.

    3. visit The FAQ XLab and read the FAQ on the free space on your hard drive.

    4. also see release space on your Mac OS X startup disk.

    6 see the storage view.

You must empty the trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.

  • Vista guard setting external hard drive read-only...

    SP1 Vista Ultimate x 64

My external hard drive (WD Elements 500 GB) guard get the value read-only. I can go in, select all the files, right click > properties and uncheck the 'read only' box, click OK. When I open the drive once again, they are read only once more.

I tried to go to the security settings for the player and adjusting so that everyone has the right to change the files and so on, to which I have an error message (on each file) saying that it cannot apply security information that the data are protected against writing.

The drive is formatted in NTFS and says he's got the A attribute.

    What should I do?

In most cases, only playback status is defined because there may be no "file locking" when editing and simultaneous removal. I suggest try enabled write caching and testing accessibility in writing files.

Alternatively, you may have a problem of 'ownership' with the reader.

To set, view, change, or remove permissions on files and folders

    1. Right-click the file or folder for which you want to set permissions, click Propertiesand then click the Security tab.
    2. Click Edit to open the permissions for dialog box.
    3. Do one of the following:

    ·         To set permissions for a group or user that does not appear in the group or user names box, click Add. Type the name of the group or user you want to set permissions for, and then click OK.

    ·         To change or remove permissions for a user or an existing group, click the name of the user or group.

    1. Do one of the following:

    ·         To grant or deny a permission, in the permissions for , select the allow or deny check box.

    ·         To remove the group or user in the group or user names box, click Remove.

  • Used to read external hard drive

Hi there, my external hard drive read fine on my old xp computer and it works on other opportunities that I tried to use it but for some reason any that it does not work on my computer.  It says ACCESS DENIED.  I tried everything I could think of.  I took possession of the car, I changed the letter in that it opens.  I don't know why, but I can't seem to make it work on my computer.  Help, please!

    Hi comichooly,

It could be a permission problem; I suggest you follow the instructions that might help you resolve the issue.

  • How can I move music and photos from my MacBook on an external hard drive, files without deleting the existing NTFS files stored on it?

    Hello.

I am aware that this issue (or different versions of it) will be requested a thousand times before, but after searching on the internet for a solution, I have been unable to find all the information that brings a simple clear answer that is specific to my problem and so thought I would ask the question myself.

I recently bought a Toshiba 1 TB external hard drive to transfer music, photo files and internal document in front of the memory of my old PC running Windows, as well as files, music and photos from my existing MacBook Pro, so I can "release" the memory on the latter.

Transfer files from the old PC proved to be easy; success achieved by simple drag / drop the files to the appropriate location on the external HD icon of Toshiba which appears once I connected to a USB port. It is perhaps worth mentioning that the area of States hard drive has been formatted NTFS for Windows, and so I guess that I would not have expected any problems when transferred to a PC.

Move the files from my MacBook has however proved anything but simple and trying to drag the respective music and photo files and drop them on the HD Toshiba icon (which appears on my desktop once it is plugged), I seem to be affected by the same issues as so much seems to have it before me, in that "forbidden access" / error symbol appears with the cursor , and bounce the files to their original location whenever I try to place them on the Toshiba HD.

I understand that this is due to the HD is formatted in NTFS, and that I would need to reformat the hard drive to move files from my MacBook, which brings me to my questions:-

    (a) how do I do this, and

    (b) can I do this without losing, damage or remove the NTFS files from my old PC, which are already stored on the external hard drive.

If one is able to offer any assistance, in the most simple, easy to follow the description, I would be really grateful!

Never been so thanks in advance!

1 install software such as Paragon NTFS on the Mac and let the reader in its current form or from the Finder, choose utilities go to menu, open disk utility and reformat.

    2. that by putting a copy on another drive. You should do this anyway, in case of failure of this drive.

  • C external drive for MacBook Air

I need an external drive C ONLY for transfer applications such as TurboTax, iBank, etc disc to hard drive on the MacBook Air. Bought an external drive of C & computer recognize no more disc stuck in drive C. visit mandatory at the Genius Bar to eject the disc. Genius used Apple and immediately recognized hard drive. My very small requirement & will use player for videos, music, photos, etc. Probably use no more than 3 times a year. Intended to save a few $$$ to by not buying is not Apple drive.

I'm on the right track? Number of external market readers if some should work correctly. Now very hesitant, but he must overcome this obstacle.

    Thank you

What is external drive C you mentioned? External DVD drive? It is probably not entirely compatible with your MacBook Air.

If you have another Mac that has the DVD player, DVD sharing would be best way rather than using your C drive.

    Hello.

I bought a new macbook air last week. I've been moving files from my old laptop via my hard drive (my ultra 1 TB WD Passport). I was able to move the correct files on the drive, but now I want to move photos and videos to my Macbook, but it won't allow me. It shows a circle of gray with a line through it, when I try to drag the file on the disk. Photos and videos are in the documents in the finder not in the photo library, I don't know if that makes a difference.

  • Transferring files from MacBook Air on external hard drive

Regularly, I backup to an external drive.  But my MacBook air becomes full and cannot update its software. So I want to permanently delete folders from my MacBook on the external drive and then if I need these files I just access it from the external drive.   How to do this?  Help, please.

    Thank you.

In general, files that take up the most space are music, photos and videos. Those who could be moved to an external drive. But if your external drive is not saved, and it fails, then you lose these files.

One of the great benefits of owning a MacBook Air is not having it connected to external devices. Perhaps you should consider the upgrade of its internal drive for a larger model.
