MD1220 disk expansion & expansion / resize virtual disk

I seek to add 6 new MD1220 to a current configuration of 6 who are chained together.  Two quick questions on this...

(1) is there as a limit to how many MD1220 can be connected?

(2) once the virtual disks were created in all of my original 6 devices, is it possible to resize or add to this Setup?  Or I should blow away and recreate?

Thank you
Greg

Hello Greg,.

(1) is there as a limit to how many MD1220 can be connected?  You can put a maximum of 4 cases with the MD1220 can be chained together (which gives a total of 96 disks per SAS port).

(2) once the virtual disks were created in all of my original 6 devices, is it possible to resize or add to this Setup?  Or I should blow away and recreate? You can add disks to your virtual drive and can increase the size, but depending on how much space you add that it can be faster to back up data and then recreate the virtual disk and restore your data.  A virtual disk expansion is really slow and it may take weeks or even months depending on the size of the virtual disk.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

  • Help resize virtual disk

    Hello

I have a single hypervisor, ESXi 4.1 (no VCenter), manage multiple virtual servers on the same physical server. I want to resize one of the disks in the virtual server (supplied thickness) to a smaller size. I did research a few posts on this, but it is not clear.

If I understand correctly, you are supposed to use Standalone Converter to create a copy of an existing virtual machine and move it to another virtual machine with disk resize to the desired volume. In Standalone Converter, I can choose the source virtual machine, but I have no options to select a destination and do not receive the notice, "this virtual machine already exists.

If anyone has any advice on the best way to do it, your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It was perfectly clear to me. Apology. When you use the converter I use the "Powered on machine" as the type of source (obviously the machine must be turned on to make it work) follow the wizard and select the ESXi host as destination.

  • Resize virtual disk

I have the virtual machine that occupies about 25 GB. I increased space 60 GB using VMware Vsphere client VM hard drive. I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed on the virtual machine. The virtual machine when I type 'fdisk-l' always displays the main partition set to 25 GB. and a scope and partition PTAS. I do not see the additional 35 GB increase. Using the command "gparted" (graphic display) on a virtual machine instead of fdisk, I see the unallocated new partition 35 G. I have then assigned to the file system and the size of the new partition. NOW, when I type 'fdisk-l' I could see the new partition of 35GB.

My question is that when the size of the virtual machine is increased using Vmware Vsphere client how is using "fdisk-l" does not show the new partition of unllocated. Which command can be used inside the virtual machine to see the new unallocated disk space? If I don't want to use the graphics command "gparted". Any advice would be nice.

    Hello

You can use the separate utility that works in text mode, you must run "parted" / dev / whatever

Then inside parted to be able to view free space to run "print free.

(Another simpler way is to run "parted/dev/whatever print free")

In any case, after the score more, is that you run "fdisk-l" with just a few calculations is easy to find free space.

Just take special attention to the (total) number of cylinders vdisk (start and end columns) and the size of the partitions (blocks column).

For example, you know the real size of vdisk (at the top of the output of 'fdisk-l'). The sum total of bytes blocks partitions less vdisk size will be the free space. Easy, isn't it?

    Hope this answer your doubt

    Best wishes / Saludos.

  • On resize virtual disk

As I raised the problem of not enough space for VM some time ago, I thought that I better mention my solution in case anyone has any ideas for improvement.

Take Web [now a little older] advice for partitioning, extension, etc., using the command prompt, same displacement of swap files - at risk of upset Windows - finished with said that he could not do.  OK, XP is pretty pedestrian compared to 7, which set my partitions of HARD drive external with no recourse to the CP. In fact, I assumed that there is no compensation on freebie VMWare Player to extend a volume of the original 40 GB database during installation - there have been, since version 3.

In addition to surfing found a 3rd party program to sort my allocation/size of the VMWare Win XP C: drive. Afraid to dirty up in Windows told me that the program knew what he was doing: I didn't try my luck. I had created a 'logic' 20 GB disk, which gave me a total of 60 GB, but remained only 40 GB for C:. AOMEI Partition Wizard the 20 GB is separated in two, then allowed me to divide in half again and reassign the 5 GB for the basic disk, give me an extra sufficient 10 GB for all tasks.

    Hello

I want to thank you for the sharing of information on a disk for cause of VM space. Your efforts to solve this problem is appreciated.

I'm sure that a lot of people, these measures is useful. Feel free to post your request here on the Forums of Windows, we would be happy to help you.

  • Something wrong with hard disk resizing

I'm under 4.1.2 and you just import my Windows 7 Bootcamp machine into a true virtual computer.  I ran out of disk space while trying to install new software in Windows so I stopped and went settings to resize the virtual disk.  While the machine of Bootcamp was 30 GB the setting for the new machine watch as GB 465,76, which is be the size of the Lion partition on the hard drive.  Knowing it's not right and something can happen when importing, I tried shrinking the machine by following the process here.  No dice, my machine stills shows the drive as being 465,76 GB and I can't do the 60 GB I would.  I'm afraid to try anything else without posting everything here first.  Any tips or ideas on what I am doing wrong?

What you see is the (although IMO the wrong) way that VMware matter partition Boot Camp to a Virtual Machine however based file so that you can not reduce the allocated virtual hard disk size but you can change the size of the virtual partition to increase the space available on the disk by removing the not used OS X in the virtual hard disk partition.

For general information, take a look at my answer: Re: counterintuitive VMWare Instructions on resize virtual disk

  • Size of the disk is impossible to pass

    Hello.

I just upgraded to VMWare Fusion 4, and at the same time I found with a full disk in my Windows XP VM.

The VM disk is 25 GB in size, when I try to increase the size of the disk in preferences, it only let me increase the size of a minimum of 232 GB (and up to 2 TB)

Not sure if this is relevant, booking within the virtual machine image (Show package) glad there are 118 files hard, most of them are 32 KB in size, with s104 to s117 that are 2 GB.

It is an ancient VM I had with me forever... I wonder how can I increase the size to say 30 GB, without having to waste 232 GB!

    Thank you

This looks like a Boot Camp partition imported Virtual Machine and if it's take a look at my answer Re: counterintuitive VMWare Instructions on resize virtual disk.

Anyway, you can use a third-party utility to expand drive C: in the unpartitioned space.

  • Automatic resizing function

    Hi all.

I created a Windows XP virtual machine.  During the process, I selected the option to automatically resize the XP VHD as it grows.  Then I ran sysprep, stop it and supported the .vmwarevm image.  Then I copied the VM image to another workstation running VMware.  I was invited afterwards, while he was working under XP, I have run out of space.  I tried to add more virtual hard disk space, but he did create another virtual hard disk.  -Meaning, it does not develop the drive hard primary vm.  Under Windows, when I look at the C: drive: it's an 8 GB HD, 7.5 of it is used my the BONES and the rest is not attributed.  Oh...  I also ran gparted and it showed only 8 GB of space, not my 250 Gig drive.

So my million dollar question is...

How can I configure automatic resizing of the main vm drive again?

(I hope I don't have to rebuild every virtual Windows environment on all the workstations individually.)

    I'm under VMware Fusion v. 1.13 (94249)

  • Recovery 1 vm rather than test them all in a file system?

I have 3 files called fs1, fs2 and fs3 systems.  On each file system, there is a good assortment of protected virtual machine, like 11-20 of the VM.

I need to resize the drive on one of our customers of windows server vm, and we did it all the time without problem.  But now that we have different without on our site of DR vs main site, we went to vsphere replication because it was independent of the storage.  Now we get the dreaded message that resizing disks are not based on replicated discs.  I can't believe that the system is not enough intelegent for this!  Looks like a simple clip to be able to resize a disk to give it more storage space.

So now this virtual machine is on filesystem fs1.  I have to do a restore of test, which means I have to wait for 13 VM here to perform a final synchronization to come online on the website of DR when all I have to do is raise this one machine so I can clone, and then tear down the test session.

    I'm going by this document:

VMware KB: Resize virtual machine disk files that are protected by the replication of vSphere

In SRM when I go to Protection groups I can't just right click on the machine unique for a computer to test.  Its all or nothing.  Anyway this redesign?

I think I've figured this out.

I can remove the protection for this a machine in the fs1 protection group.  Delete the virtual machine for this protection group.  Create a new protection group and just put this virtual machine in it.  Then create a recovery plan and just put this protection in there group.  Then test this recovery plan.

A lot of work around when the easiest thing would be for VMWare just to allow you to resize a disk and replicate this change on the network.

When I can back up the virtual machine to the original protection group and basically to undo all changes.

  • hard size does not match size of drive setting in the settings

Windows gave me a "low disk space" error today so I'm going to add space on the virtual disk but noticed a strange anomaly...

Looking at the size of the file real hard, it is only 49,29 GB. When I open the settings for the virtual machine, the "Disk size" setting is 233,73 Go. Windows reports the disc as 45.9 GB.

    disksize.jpg

This virtual machine has been migrated my Boot Camp partition before. What's weird, is that the partition came this virtual machine was only of 50 GB. (My entire hard drive is only 250 GB) The virtual machine is now on a 2 TB external.

What happens here? I'm not a 233,76 GB of virtual disk, but I can't drag the slider to the left?

Looks like it's the Windows partition of the Boot Camp imported Virtual Machine partition that is short on space and if you want to better understand what is happening then read my answers in Re: size of HARD drive on the Conversion of Bootcamp at VM and Re: counterintuitive VMWare Instructions on resize virtual disk.

Also preallocating disk hard existing virtual will not solve the problem!

  • How to shrink a pre-allocated VM?

There are dozens of explanations on how do to reduce VMs grow-able.

I have a virtual machine of 173 GB Windows 7 on my iMac OSX 10.6.6 hard drive. I also have a same size Bootcamp partition. The virtual machine may have been made from the version of Bootcamp, but it was long ago, a year or two, and who remembers.

There is certainly a way for me to "shrink" the virtual machine. Or by literally shrinking, copying to another virtual computer or a copy in a newly formed virtual machine or its importation by using software such as Carbon Copy Cloner or Winclone, or some other 3rd party software.

I would like some suggestions. Anything short of a new virtual machine and reinstall Windows (which is what I'll do if that proves to be the ONLY alternative).

    Thank you very much.

How to shrink a pre-allocated VM?

Hard disks VMware Fusion UI settings you can uncheck the disk space checkbox pre-allocate and then after VMware Fusion is finished to convert the disc you can use the narrowing of the VMware Tools, or you can even do as suggested by continuum, however study the following.

If the VM in question was a partition Boot Camp that was imported by VMware Fusion then unless things have changes in VMware Fusion 3.x, the virtual hard disk created during the import is the size of the Macintosh HD, well the only software in the hard will be that of everything that was on the Boot Camp partition.  Take a look on Re: counterintuitive VMWare Instructions on resize virtual disk for additional information on the layout of the virtual hard drive in a Boot Camp Partition imported.

Another approach would be just the Boot Camp partition real in the hard imported by itself to a new target with Symantec Ghost type hard or similar image and this is probably the way faster and easier with a stretch drive that has been reduced to a single operation.

In addition, you can use VMware vCenter Converter Standalone or Paragon go virtual to create a new virtual machine or hard of the required type and too, this can simply be on the Boot Camp partition in the hard thus eliminating the EFI and HFS partitions + created during the import of the Boot Camp partition.

  • Increased size of the hard drive but Windows C drive still shows smaller

I am trying to increase the size of the hard drive of my Windows XP virtual machine. I followed the instructions in the help to increase the size (rather than a second hard drive which suggested the FAQ I read later). My MAC finder shows a drop of water in my space of hard drive together, but the Windows C drive still shows the same amount as it had before starting the process. How can I get Windows to recognize the hard drive is bigger than it used to be? Will not install the program I am trying to load because of limited space.

Windows and Linux servers. Most Windows servers are either W2k to W2k3. thank you for the advice.

P2V of Windows made from the Converter Linux server always uses an Agent for Windows converter deployed remotely, the actual cloning is the same.

According to me, the main thing that you lose with Converter Linux server is based on the volume of V2V/VMI, in which case you can resize virtual machines Windows volumes.  You can still run Windows V2V/VMI of Linux, but the reconfiguration support is experimental.
