  I been using MS Works since 1989 and can tell you there's usually nothing slow about the work, so I think there must be a problem on your computer.  Have you checked against viruses and malware?  I start in Safe Mode and do it.  When you first power up press F8 once per second, and then select Safe Mode when you get the Advanced Boot Menu.

  I know that's probably not useful to most of you, but I had the same problem and do not think that I had any disc that came with my Dell.  I looked around and found that the original package provided with the Dell XPS has a marked disk Microsoft Works 9.  Insert this disc and run the update succeeded.  So maybe check around to see if you have lying around somewhere...
