Migration from VMware to USB RAID array

Current configuration: HP N54L Microserver, P410 RAID card, 3 partitions, each 1 VMware datastore.

VMware runs from a USB, installed from VMware-ESXi-5.5.0-1331820-HP-5.72.27-Feb2014.iso.

Datastore1 contains virtual machines.  Datastore3 contains a data reader to one of the virtual machines.  Datastore2 is not used.

Can I install VMware for a current HP specific image to the partition currently containing Datastore2 without losing my VMs on 1 and 3 data warehouses?

Thank you!

Oh now I understand! Logical drives separate are separate as readers for ESXi (and any other OS). So if you take the right one for ESXi, the last two must remain intact.

I did this once (two logical drives on raid-controller) simple installation and did not know what is happening, so I backed up all virtual machines off site. But only the logical drive that I picked up for ESXi installation has been re-partitioned.

  • Migrate from VMware Guest Server that contains the database of VIC in the new VMware host

Hi, I inherited a system running ESX 3.0.1. The CIV is running on a stand-alone server, but the database resides on a guest on one of the VMware hosts. I need to move/migrate the vmware client to another server so I can use it. How can I migrate because if I try I'll lose the connection to the database?

I can not just to right and migrate because servers have different CPUs. I can first.

Sorry if this is a newbie question.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

do not convert.  This will leave the original intact. Once it comes online and has been validated, you can destroy the old.   In addition, do if offline.

  • Migration from VmWare Workstation to a server solution

I am running 8 virtual machines of Windows XP inside VMWare Workstation on Windows 2008 (which I use as a workstation) in a box of Quad Core with 8 GB RAM.

My plan is to move the virtual machines of Windows XP on a separate server and possibly add a bit more to their number. I would also like to migrate the server functions of the current WIn2k8 box on that same server. These functions are the portion of light file, very lightweight SQL server and a few other minor services.

I am happy with VMWare Workstation and in particular the VMWare Tools application, because it makes the Windows XP virtual machines as reagent as if they were not VMs. It is important that after the migration, the virtual machines are as sensitive as they are now, given that I have would be to connect to them via ethernet to a Vista/Windows 7 machine by any means is the best (Office distance or something else).

I would like to know what solution I should opt for, I think that the options are either ESX/ESXi (what is the difference here?) - am I right that the best way to buy, as part of VMWare Server or VMware vSphere - 1.x on WIndows Server.

I have no requirements of availability/redundancy.

This means that ESX has a management console - what is a Linux kernel, you can perform operations as if you were on a Linux machine.

ESXi uses a very small SSH server and officially there is no way to interact with the machine on the console - everything is done by outside

They give the same ESX features no matter what version you use, just to manage that you need to do differently.

Of course ESX/ESXi works that on some hardware - there is a HCL and also a community supported the list machines that are capable of runnning ESXi, but are not supported by VMware.

VMware server - can run on practically a Windows y / OS Linux

    Good luck to you ventures!

  • Investigation to migrate from VMware

    Hello

I introduce myself, I am system administrator in a town hall in France and speak directly, I understand very little English

I run a Windows and now 4 ESX version 3.5 with a VitualCenter servers environment

This is my first post on your forum

    I have several questions

I have a version of VMware ESX 3.5 with 4 servers ESX and vCenter server

    Question 1)

You have to migrate to 3.5 Update04 rather than migrate to 4.0 (vSphere) is that the update is included in the maintenance of VMware?

    Question 2)

Having no resources available in France for the migration to 4.0 (vSphere), it is difficult to do? How to upgrade my license?

Is there a particular method to apply?

    Question 3)

If I just update my esx version 3.5 servers Update04 is possible to do it in stages? As a first step to update my VirtualCenter and continue to use my esx normally and then update my esx servers a few days later?

We have obligations of production and it is difficult to do everything in one operation

    Thanks in advance

Oops. . misread responded on the upgrade process. . do not license. .. Sorry

  • I would like to migrate from Aperture. What happens to my masters that are on a RAID array and then what should I do with my safe which is located on a separate drive please?

I'm sorry, but I'm loud understand what happening to my master original RAW files, I keep offline on a RAID array and then what I do with my safe that, like all my photos modified? Sorry for this simple question, but would someone help please my lift the fog?

    Thank you

    Rob

One of the major downfalls of Aperture is that it shows you where are your pictures. They always favored it as a feature (even as a ' new paradigm'), but it's not so wonderful when you need to do something about Apple never intended. Then, it sounds really like it led to you not knowing where your files or files that correspond to which elements of the UI opening. I suggest that you need to nail for yourself - images from Aperture to right click and choose Show in Finder, until you know where everything is.

Otherwise, make sure you have plenty of available disk space, stop asking questions and just see what happens when you run plugin import LR with the options I suggested. It won't damage the opening.

  • OptiPlex 7020 and RAID array

    Greetings.

I bought an Optiplex 7020 and controller card SATA referenced in this post after you speak with a representative and come far from believing the 7020 and the SATA controller card combination would allow me to set up a RAID 1 array. I bought both the 7020 and the controller Dell card.

However, after several conversations with the Dell and Technical Support Technical Support Startech, I'm still not able to get this working. I am able to enter in the configuration menu of controller card at startup in addition to being able to access the system BIOS. The BIOS shows 'Mass Storage' assigned to the PCI Express slot (as it should), but complains without hard drive being found when I try to start.

Just for clarity: I'm not trying to use a built-in RAID configuration and try instead to use a controller card to take care of the RAID array. So I am (perhaps erroneous) belief that the 'RAID ON' in the BIOS setting is unimportant because the controller card takes care of the RAID array. BTW: My BIOS is not a parameter "RAID ON". I say just that to prevent an answering machine to take me on the way to the RAID configuration integrated. The 7020 does not come with built-in RAID.

In fact, this Dell page said I need to "buy additional hardware", which is exactly what I did when I bought the controller card - or at least I thought.

So the questions are: what should I do to be able to get my Optiplex 7020 to mirror the first drive on a second so that the second is bootable immediately in case one breaks down?  Do I need a software solution instead? Do I need extra hardware yet?

    Thanks in advance!

If this card requires a driver, so it is probably not responsible until Windows loads BIOS will not be able to see the drives connected on this card to boot from one of them.

And according to the Manual, the startup options are:

To specify the order in which the computer attempts to find an operating system. The options are:

    1. Floppy drive
    2. WDC WD2500AAKX-75U6AA0
    3. USB storage device
    4. CD/DVD/CD-RW drive
    5. Integrated NETWORK interface

Therefore, there is no option to say BIOS to get a boot on PCI - e drive.

That said, it is made reference to the Intel RAID controller in the manual, which suggests it could work with this system.

Win 8/8.1 and win 10, there is a built-in utility called "storage space" to create a mirror. Two drives must be connected to the SATA ports on the motherboard and probably identical in size. So give that a try...

  • After a failed raid array recovery my data store is missing

    Hi all

I'm under ESXi at home, but I have a problem with that I need help

First of all, let me start with the specs:

    ESXI: 5.1.0,799733

RAID Controller: Adaptec 6805 (driver of the community with the support)

Configuration of RAID: RAID 5 12,71 TB of disk

I had some problems with my RAID controller which I solved it using the Adaptec article: a table failed can be recovered? I ended up drop the table and re-create it.

The RAID array is now in OPTIMUM condition, so I started ESXi and connected using vSphere to find all my virtual machines as unknown (Inaccessible).

I started googling and found some information, but nothing so far to solve this problem.

I tried info from these links:

  • How to migrate from Windows XP to Windows 7 non-destructively?

How to migrate from Windows XP to Windows 7 to non-destructively?... meaning is there a way to do this without backup data (on the XP disk), the Windows 7 upgrade and then restore the XP backup data?

Moreover, since the structures of folders (I am told are slightly different) XP and Windows 7 where can I restore the data from?

for example where my Documents from XP to go on the side of Windows 7? and so on... there at - it a 'table of equivalence' for this?

    Thank you.

    The upgrade to Windows XP?

Please read these instructions carefully and completely before you begin installing Windows 7: there are important steps that you must follow to upgrade your PC from Windows XP to Windows 7 in order to preserve your files and settings.

Before you begin, you'll need to backup all your data to an external storage device, and you will need all the installation discs for the programs that you want to keep. Please make sure that you have an external hard drive (see details below).

More detailed instructions are available at windows.microsoft.com/upgrade-windows-xp. Here are the basic steps.

    1. start Windows Upgrade Advisor (windows.microsoft.com/upgradeadvisor) to see if there are known issues that may affect the installation and the question of whether you should install the version of 32 or 64 bit Windows 7.

2 back up your files and settings on an external hard drive using Windows Easy Transfer (windows.microsoft.com/windows-easy-transfer). If you do not have an external hard drive, you will not be able to use Windows Easy Transfer. Alternatively, you can copy the files you want to keep on a USB stick, CD or DVD.

    3. you will need to manually reinstall your programs, such as Microsoft Office, after I installed Windows 7. Gather the installation for your programs and all partner/license product key discs. You may be able to download programs from the Internet. For example, Windows Live Messenger can be installed from the download.live.com/messenger.

    4. Insert the Windows 7 DVD in your PC. When asked "which type of installation you want. Click on "Custom (advanced)."

    5. when Windows 7 is installed, use Windows Easy Transfer to restore your files and settings.

If you are not comfortable Windows 7 installation, check with a local retail or the services of the PC company store to see if they offer upgrade services.

  • Data store missing after the reconstruction of the raid array

One of the players in my raid array has failed a few days ago.

I had a spare drive in the table so the controller immediately began the process of rebuilding and all servers were running throughout.

When the reconstruction has been completed (I checked this via the user interface of raid array and the newspaper), I had to stop the server to remove disc defective (not replaceable chassis hot) and when I restarted the server, the data on the raid array store isn't there anymore.  I also checked through the raid controller interface that I removed the (defective) drive and that the table was always in a ready state when he came.

In vsphere client, when I click on the storage... Add link, the server sees the material but if I click then it tells me that it will be re - format the volume.  See attachment.  I have most certainly does not take the next step and reformat.  Simply, I took the screenshot and regularized.

I found these instructions, but they are for an older version of ESXi and am unsure if they are correct for ESXi 6.0.0 338124

    Hi ThompsG,

Yes, there are two data stores for the virtual machine located on the RAID array.  The virtual machine itself was stored in a different data store that was not in the raid array.

I spent about 48 hours last week, including this morning, trying to coax ESXi recognizing volumes, with no luck.  Finally, I gave up and I removed the virtual computer hard drives that were on the corrupt data store.  Then the virtual machine came without problem.

Finally, since I have everything on these 2 volumes backed up to a cloud provider, I have recreated the two data stores in the raid array and began the restoration process. It is currently running and has about 16 days left to go.

  • How to do a RAID-array attached locally in a Linux VM - vSphere 5.1

    Hello people from VMware

I'm trying to set up a file server with mirrored data storage. So I installed an LSI MegaRaid SAS 9266-8I have in my machine hoste, tied the two HARD drives and set up a RAID 1 virtual disk in the bios on the card. After the reboot, the map and the virtualdisk are recognized by the hypervisor. I configured the PCI card for DirectPath-I/O and attached to a virtual computer that runs Debian Wheezy. The virtual machine appears normally, but I can't the virtual disk or disks attached to card in/dev.

    lspci says as follows:

    root@Gondolin:/# lspci k | grep - i - A3 lsi

    root@Gondolin:/# megacli - adpCount

    County controller: 0.

    Exit code: 0x00

Of course, the map is not visible the system at all. Manually load the modprobe megaraid_sas driver doesn't change anything. Google did not bring much usfull information, only of discussions with dead ends. So I started to wonder if I did something wrong initially, or if I'm doing something which is supposed to be gives in a driffrent more apropriat way.

Is there a better way to spend logacl storage in a virtual machine? Or should I continue trying to get the card works with the approach that I have chosen? Maybe switch distro (would not very fond of that)?

  • migration of VMware

    Hello

I have a question of rapid migration of vmware.

We install a new server r420 dell poweredge at a customer site. It's
replacement of a dell poweredge r310 server running vmware 4.0. It is managed

If I do the new r420 managed by vcenter as well and make a host-to-host

and then back down to the new server? With the virtual machines being about 200 GB I have
don't want that pass the link as his "only adsl speed.

    Thank you

    Daniel.

Welcome to the VMware forums communities.  The host will communicate directly with them to migrate the virtual computer.  You'll just want to make sure that the two hosts each other can ping the IP address or the host name by which they are registered in vCenter.

  • Undetected RAID array

    I use a HP DL180 G5 equipped of an E200 HP controller.

I built two RAID arrays using the E200 controller

    1 65 GB hard drive

4 HDDs of 750 GB in RAID 5

I was able to successfully install ESXi 4.1 and everything seems to work without problems.  Except that I am unable to see the matrix RAID 2 to.  I am able to see the 1 65 GB drive, because that's where ESXi is installed.  But I can't seem to find the matrix RAID 2 to anywhere.

I tried to do a new analysis of all storage cards, but it is not always see it.  I tried to rebuild RAID 5, but it is not always see it.

When you run fdisk-l on the tech support console it does not show the RAID 5 array anywhere. I also ran lspci and it does not detect the Smart Array E200 mass storage, but it does not detect the RAID array.  DF not to see no more.

I don't know where to go from here.

What are the troubleshooting steps I can go through to find the missing RAID array?  I'm assuming that they will have to be performed from the CLI.

I have not tried to install 4 independent labels still to see if we can see them or not.  I'm sure that the disks are always good as I was running this server as a target iSCSI using Solaris 10 until a few weeks before.

    Welcome to the community,

ESX has a limitation for the disk/LUN 2 TB sizes less than 512 bytes. Assuming that you are running the latest firmware on the E200 and the upgrade of cache installed (required for RAID5) I recommend you remove the 65GB disk and create a RAID5 with 4 x 750GB disks. Since the RAID 5 create 3 logical volumes, for ESXi and 2 x 10 GB ~ 1 TB for VMFS data storage. You need to do this, use the ACU on the SmartStart CD utility.

See http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00688683/c00688683.pdf for more details E200

  • Custom ESXi from VMware ESXi vs Dell

I'm trying to consolidate all our servers (P2V). My question is what distro ESXi should I use for my VMware servers or Dell custom? We currently have vSphere Essentials and yesterday 4.0 Update 2 is out. What will be my most safe/reliable and recommended approach.

    Material:

2 x Dell PowerEdge R510 (ESXi via USB)

    1 x Dell PowerEdge 2850 (vCenter)

    Current options:

    (1) use 4u2 ESXi and vCenter 4u2 directly from the VMware site.

    (2) use ESXi 4u1 (Dell customized) and 4u2 from VMware sitevCenter. (the ESXi Dell 4u2 is not available)

    (3) use ESXi 4u1 (Dell custom) Dell site and 4u2 from VMware sitevCenter.

    (4) another idea?

    Thanks for any help!

The version of Dell has the right ICD (but the vanilla version works as well) and the ready to run Dell OpenManage.

You can add this tool later or boot from the Dell U1 version and use VMware Update Manager to upgrade to the version of U2.

Welcome to the Forums - I had no problems following the upgrade guide - http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40_u1/vsp_40_u1_upgrade_guide.pdf

  • Ideal for RAID array

Because have a new video workstation built last autumn I used installer disk hard next five:

    C: / OS & programs

    D: / sound & video Media & CS5Projects

    E: / swap file & media Cache

    F: / Previews and exports

H: / other multimedia files (Photoshop, and al.)

This week I pick up a controller from Areca ARC-1880ix-16. With it, I will implement an array of RAID3 eight discs with a hot swap.

I tend to simply set up a unique folder for every video project that will contain all files previously stored on drives D, E and F. Before that, however, I want to solicit the comments or suggestions of others using RAID arrays.

The IMO = Im my opinion. See your the Internet Dictionary

The disk performance for the reader where export is stored is not very critical on export. CPU/GPU/memory is the usual bottleneck and exporting to: keep the fill rate on your lower raid, that you access two drives (raid and (H) at the same time instead of one (raid).
