Migration of vCenter

I did some research, but could not find anything.  I'm on vRanger Pro 5.2 connection and I was wondering if there will be complications of my vCenter upgrade to a new server?  I'm upgrading to vCenter 4.0 to 4.1 and it is not going to a new server.  The license has been purchased for the ESX servers, so I think that once I have completed the migration, I would just need to add the new vCenter to vRanger connection?  I stop vRanger connection at all during the migration?

Thank you

Byron,

You're the first person to ask this question BEFORE the actual move. What is good.

> ... I just need to add the new vCenter to vRanger connection?

I say 'no' to this question. Assuming that you always use the same PB VC (just improved), if you add a new VC (and you probably disabled VC old at this time), all existing jobs will find what they have been configured for-VC is opposed (VMs/cases/clusters/etc.) The reason is that all the jobs are related to the old VC id that is stored in the table InventorySourceConnection of Ranger DB.

My suggestion is simple enough:

complete your upgrade of VC/move;

do not add new VC

Open the InventorySourceConnection table in SQL Management Studio and change the column address for former VC so there new server IP or FQDN VC;

Restart the services of guard;

Open the GUI. You may need to provide credentials for VC makes it fast. sometimes Ranger tries to connect with blank password and account that you use for VC can be locked (http://communities.quest.com/thread/14133?tstart=0)

You can change the value more easily using sqlcmd (normally installed with any version of MS SQL). Command would be (assuming you had one active VC in the store inventory):

"sqlcmd-s - vRangerPro d q" update InventorySourceConnection set Address = '' where InventorySourceConnectionTypeId = 0 and IsDeleted = 0 ".

  • Migration cold vcenter server VM to another logical data center

    My version is 5.0

I have a vCenter with multiple logical datacenters.

I'm under vCenter on a virtual machine on a host in a datacenter.  The SQL Server with the vCenter database is on the same host.

I need to move the two virtual machines to a different host in another data center.

All LUNS are accessible from both hosts.

I'm under standard vSwitches, not distributed.   The vSwitches on each host have exact same exchanges that are put in place.

Can I migrate successfully cold other guests off the power, remove them from the inventory, save them with a new host and power back on.

However I'm not sure how to migrate the vCenter cold and SQL VMs.

My first thought was to turn off the power, connect the viClient directly to the guests in question and delete them from the inventory on the current host and save them to the new host.

What I don't know is if the vCenter database will have a problem with the location of the machine since I do change out vCenter.

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you

Welcome to the community - you thought initial is correct since migrate is a function of vcenter but Word of warning make sure that you select Remove flexible financing inventory and not delete from the disk - remove inventory will remove form VM guests of stocks without deleting the VM disk shape.

There will be no problem with access to the database-

  • Migrate from vCenter to a cluster of a nonclustered Member

Work on a new environment and I'm stuck with something sorta here. I have 3 guests, 2 are new material (r.620) and 1 is more old (1950). The 1950s was presented today, the R620s have been about 2 weeks now.

Now that the 1950's the mix so I created a new EVC cluster limited to Penryn, r.620 1950 and one are in the cluster. I want the other r.620 in the cluster, BUT my vCenter is running on it. Cannot migrate the vCenter for memebers cluster because it is exposed to the extensions of the processor beyond the limit of Penryn from the pole...

A little lost on what I can do here? Is there a 'stop invited, migrate to host X, boot prompt' type function I can use?

Assuming you are using a shared storage accessible from all hosts, vCenter Server VM power off, remove it inventory of the current host by connecting it directly to the host (using the vSphere client), and then connect to the host of the 'target', add the server vCenter back to inventory and turn it on.

  • Migration of Vcenter DB from SQL SERVER 2005 to SQL 2008 Express

    Hello
I'll migrate the physical vcenter server to a virtual machine, then I'll install a new VM with OS 2008R2 and SQL2008. But I need the migration plan
vCenter DB from SQL 2005 to SQL2008. VMware also recommends

Note: 1) VMware recommends now IP address and host name the same information to facilitate the migration.

    (2) software migration to different vCenter Server, Manager of update or VMware Orchestrator. For example, Site Recovery Manager is not migrated.

    (3) move the VMware Orchestrator database. You must do it manually.

We can give to vcenter server new name and IP and if yes what will be then problem occur after the post migration.

    Thank you

    vmguy

It takes to keep the same name and IP address? If we will give different vcenter and IP server name then how will transfer of post stage

If you can keep the same name of host and IP, this would make it so much easier.  That said, if you need to change the host name and IP address of vCenter you can run into issues where all your guests appear as disconnected. Usually, you can right click and choose 'connect', asked credentials for your hosts of ESXi, but after that they should remain connected.

In addition, just in case I posted above another KB.

  • How to migrate from vCenter as virtual machine to another host without vMotion running

We organize ESX 3.5 hosts. I've already updated our vCenter VM to 4.0U1. We have not the vMotion Installer yet (but are licensed for her). What is the appropriate way for migrating the vCenter VM to another host without vMotion, so I can upgrade the host the vCenter VM is running on? I have examined all the documents and messages, I could find, but don't have not seen this addressed.

You must turn off the virtual machine.

Copy the files (if are not on a shared data store).

Save the vmx file in the new ESX (with browser data store).

    Turn on the virtual machine.

  • vRanger connection 7.1.1 migrate again vCenter

    Hello!

I have to build a replacement vCenter server in a new physical data center and we are * not * re-use of existing vCenter DB, it will be a new database.

I read a few forum messages:

    http://en.community.Dell.com/TechCenter/data-protection/f/4784/t/19555352

The conflicts of the article above with Guide from Dell:

    https://support.software.Dell.com/vRanger/KB/82362

The replacement vCenter server is already online, I just need help to plan my activities of migration in order to ensure the backup jobs/history will not be lost.

    Thank you!

    -Shaun

While the support KB illustrates the method to directly modify the database connection vRanger table, I would recommend a case of pension to the best advice of opening.

If you go down the road to edit the database, please note that incorrect updates or deletions to the data in the database can make it unusable. Please make a backup of SQL Server database or save the prior VM (using vRanger connection) vRanger connection for any changes.

It is best to open a pension case.

I will add a new element of the road map for vRanger connection consider whether we can allow editing of the address of vCenter.

  • Migrate from vCenter 6.0 from 2008 to 2012

    Hello

We have vCenter 6.0 running server 2008, 2012 with the database on SQL server.

I want to know how can I migrate vCenter 6.0 from 2008 to 2012. Step by step guide will be very appreciated.

    Thank you

    Mihir

    Hello

    Not quite same as 5.1

The important thing here is that if your CSP is separated deployed and your CV is a virtual machine then you can shut it down, take a backup of SQL DB and a snapshot of the virtual machine and then build a VC again on a new virtual machine with the same information.

Just install the components of vCenter and link it to your existing DB. If this does not work, then off the VM, restore your SQL DB and turn your old vCenter.

  • Can I remove the SSO database after migrating to vCenter 5.5?

We have migrated just the vCenter Server 5.1 to 5.5.

As vCenter 5.5 don't use SSO database, can we just delete the RSA for SQL Server database?

    Thank you

Yes, see: VMware KB: upgrading vCenter Single Sign-On to vCenter Single Sign-On 5.5 5.1

    • vCenter Single Sign-On 5.5 has removed the requirement for a database. After SSO 5.1 has been upgraded to 5.5 SSO, RSA data can be discarded.
  • Migrate a vCenter device to a "Server" version

    Hello

I'm running a vCenter in the form of an appliance. I want to move now to a windows installation. I'm actually under version 5.1 and I intend to migrate to version 5.5

Is it possible to migrate such device if possible in a one shot?

Thanks in advance for the answer.

    Hello

Why do you want to migrate to the Windows Version?

There is no direct upgrade/migration path.

What you can do is to use an adhesive to VMware: InventorySnapshot & #8211; VMware Labs to migrate your inventory to the Windows Installation.

    Hi vijay,.

    Welcome to the community...

    (1) the best way to migrate VMS is via v2v converter. You can easily migrate them in minimizing downtime.

The disk will also be migrate according to your requirement.

Is not possible. For a migration live to work, you need the source networks and applications available in both environments.

I just create a new server vCenter in the 5.1 environment and migrate new hosts to the new vCenter server.

  • SRM starts does not after migration to vCenter

    Hi all

We are moving some things regarding the vCenter and SRM.  vCenter and SRM are on separate servers, remain like this once all the moves are complete.  I currently work in a test environment in order to eliminate the process.  Moreover, all this is actually in 4.1 U 2.

The vCenter and SRM databases are moved to new servers.  vCenter also moved to a new server.  SRM will not move.

So far, the migration went well.  Everything worked fine after the vCenter and SRM databases have been moved.  vCenter worked well after being re-installed on a new server.   However, now I have problems with MRS after the modified vCenter (hostname/ip).  It won't start (or at least it is in a perpetual state start) and the log file is similar errors to: could not establish a connection to VMware vCenter.

This makes sense since the vCenter hostname/ip just be changed.  To try to find a way to solve this problem, I was looking for to http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2008033.  I tried to adjust the database, but now he complains about host certificates.  I'm starting to think about a re - install MRS. from scratch may be the best option.

Y at - it an easier way, or am I missing something?

    Thanks for your help...

    Hello

The Ko, you mentioned suggests to re - install RS, so I think it is necessary, and there is not another way.

  • Local SQL database migration from Vcenter 5 to a SQL cluster

    Hello

I'm trying to migrate my real installation vcenter 5 with a sql local database to a SQL clusster.

This is manipulation that I do:

    -Stop services vcenter

-Copy the mdf and ldf for the database files in my directory my SQL cluster

-Change the ODBC connector to specify the path of the database news

After this manipulation I try to restart services Vcenter and he pop up me an error.

After somes tests I do an unistall of the vcenter instance.

I have check the ODBC connector after unistall and it has been deleted.

I create another with the pathof my database to my SQL cluster and I restart installing Vcenter 5

When I check "use an existing database" and specify my recreate ODBC connector before.

    Installation works very well.

After restarting my server vcenter server start without problems and work.

I need to know if there is a possibility of just 'fix' the instance to specify the new database because uninstall the instance is a great action?

    Thanks for help you,

    Hello

I have try this manipulation in the laboratory environment and this work as a result of this step:

-Copy the files mdf and listening to your new location of the database database

-Unistall Vcenter Server on your server

-Remove the ODBC if not erased by installation

-Create it again with the new location of the database

-Restart installing Vcenter Server and specify "use an existing database" and refer to the ODBC connector create just before

-To complete the installation and launch your Vcenter
