Mini Mac server - attachment of external hard drives file transfer speed

Hi guys!

I wanted to increase the speed and storage capacity to transfer to my Mac mini file, so I bought a box of external hard drives. The one I bought is: http://www.icydock.com/goods.php?id=219

Built-in the Mac mini hard drives transfer the file to 60 MB/s (writing and reading) and I wanted to get better speed of file transfer, so I bought an SSD that is going to be inside with an another HARD drive of 3 TB for archiving my files. The housing is connected by USB3.0 (5 Gb/s) for the Mac mini.

[SSD-> files I opened every day] - speed around 550 MB/s write and 500 MB/sec in reading

[HDD-> Archives, files that I have does not open very often] - speed around 150 MB/s write and 150 MB/sec in reading

So I did some benchmarks on my new Setup, and the speed is not really what I expected. Transfer of file max speed I have achieved is about 100 MB/sec in writing on the external SSD plugged into the mac mini. This transfer has been filed since an iMac 21 "2011 with an SSD (with almost the same speed read/write than the box) so it's quite disappointing.

It is possible that the Mac has a 'file transfer speed limit' is somewhere? Or whatever else that could affect that?

More information on my setup:

Mac Mini server 2012 - 2 TB RAID 1 - Mac OSX 10.9.5

iMac 21 "2011 - Crucial SSD 275 Gb - Mac OSX 10.9.4

IcyDock external enclosure - 4 bays, USB3 5 Gb/s

-Red WD HDD 3To

-Crucial SSD 1 TB

Together internal Gigabit Ethernet network

Thank you!

Was perhaps Spotlight indexing external at the same time, the test has been done?

-What is the format of the disks? PC players are usually formatted with NTFS that a Mac CAN read natively, but CAN NOT write to. Thus, yu cannot copy any files or folder natively on disks formatted in NTFS.

-You can write to disk formatted in NTFS with an application like:

  • How can I move music and photos from my MacBook on an external hard drive, files without deleting the existing NTFS files stored on it?

    Hello.

I am aware that this issue (or different versions of it) will be requested a thousand times before, but after searching on the internet for a solution, I have been unable to find all the information that brings a simple clear answer that is specific to my problem and so thought I would ask the question myself.

I recently bought a Toshiba 1 TB external hard drive to transfer music, photo files and internal document in front of the memory of my old PC running Windows, as well as files, music and photos from my existing MacBook Pro, so I can "release" the memory on the latter.

Transfer files from the old PC proved to be easy; success achieved by simple drag / drop the files to the appropriate location on the external HD icon of Toshiba which appears once I connected to a USB port. It is perhaps worth mentioning that the area of States hard drive has been formatted NTFS for Windows, and so I guess that I would not have expected any problems when transferred to a PC.

Move the files from my MacBook has however proved anything but simple and trying to drag the respective music and photo files and drop them on the HD Toshiba icon (which appears on my desktop once it is plugged), I seem to be affected by the same issues as so much seems to have it before me, in that "forbidden access" / error symbol appears with the cursor , and bounce the files to their original location whenever I try to place them on the Toshiba HD.

I understand that this is due to the HD is formatted in NTFS, and that I would need to reformat the hard drive to move files from my MacBook, which brings me to my questions:-

    (a) how do I do this, and

    (b) can I do this without losing, damage or remove the NTFS files from my old PC, which are already stored on the external hard drive.

If one is able to offer any assistance, in the most simple, easy to follow the description, I would be really grateful!

Never been so thanks in advance!

1 install software such as Paragon NTFS on the Mac and let the reader in its current form or from the Finder, choose utilities go to menu, open disk utility and reformat.

    2. that by putting a copy on another drive. You should do this anyway, in case of failure of this drive.

  • do I have to buy an external hard drive to transfer my library to another computer?

Do I have to buy an external hard drive to transfer my library to another computer? There is another technology that is cheaper?

Physically, you can move the HD on your current computer and install it in the new computer.

You have backups of your photos and files of catalog on another disc? If so, you can physically take the backup HD and install it in the new computer. If this isn't the case, then invest in an external hard drive for backups (and transfers) is highly recommended. You live very dangerous if you don't have backups. I wouldn't bother even to make the transfer until you are sure have backups on a different disk.

I guess you could use WiFi, Ethernet or a cloud like DropBox service.

You could borrow an external HD to a relative or friend.

  • Cannot get Mac to recognize the external hard drive

try to get my CD on iTunes, bought a new external hard drive which worked flawlessly for 30 CD then nothing, iTunes does not seem to recognize when I put a CD in. Replaced the hard drive but no improvement.

I can always migrate songs of a laptop.

I'm confused. By "hard drive" do you mean "optical drive"?  I don't know how you get a CD to a hard drive.

Do you mean in your iTunes library?  iTunes is the application itself which opens libraries. You can't get a CD on/in/at the inside of/etc, iTunes.

  • How to convert wma to mp3 on external hard drive file

http://www.mediahuman.com/audio-converter/ - free.  Says it does WMA. I have not used it so try at your own risk...

Switch (free basic version) - http://www.nch.com.au/switch/index.html - I don't know if this will make WMA

    All2Mp3 - http://download.cnet.com/All2MP3/3000-2140_4-190407.html - limited success with WMA

Flip4mac - need version payware intermediary that allows you to convert.  Use with Quicktime player.  Flip4Mac - http://dynamic.telestream.net/downloads/download-flip4macwmv.asp?prodid=flip4mac wmv - the free version will allow QuickTime play, but not to convert Windows Media files.

After installation, a new component of Flip4Mac will appear in system preferences.  Make sure that you set the boxes to make sure that it will play WMV files in Quicktime format.

VLC - not really a converter but will do a bit on the menu export.  Can be slow to be converted and there will be a learning curve.

Explore online converters when you download a file in a format and download in another.

I do not know if your computer can run Audion 3 I think I used to use it to convert WMA.

  • External hard drive file names are hidden in Vista

    Hello

    1. don't you make changes on the computer before this problem?

Step 1: Check if the problem persists in the clean boot state.

From your computer by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs so that you can determine if a background program is interfering with your game or program. This type of boot is known as a "clean boot".

    Reference:
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/929135

When you are finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:

    1. click on start and then click Run.
    2. type msconfig and click OK.

The System Configuration Utility dialog box appears.

    3. click on the tab general, click Normal Startup - load all services and device drivers and then click OK.
    4. When prompted, click on restart to restart the computer.

Step 2: If it helps, try the steps and check them off below.

    a. open the external hard drive and right-click on the empty space and select Customize this folder on the Customize tab select images and videos from the use of this file as a template.
    b. right-click on an empty area of the window and click Show, and then click Hide file names to uncheck.

NOTE: If it is gray to hide file names, so make sure you have either very large icons, large icons, icons or small icons dotted first instead of the list, details, or tiles. (See right screenshot below)

    c. the names of files and folders should now be back.
    d. If you have changed the model folder in step 2, then change to the model file you want or had before.

  • Question about external hard drive file systems

Some of my external hard drives use NTFS, other system FAT 32.  I use them mainly for the storage of RAW images, and they must be able to Exchange files between them, and with my computer using Photoshop 5 and Windows 7.  Should I wait for problems between these two file systems?  Or can it be just ignored?

NTFS is better than FAT32. In addition to the benefits of using NTFS as mentioned by BearPup, the files will be safe as well as FAT32 NTFS. In addition, FAT32 has a maximum file (one file) to 4 GB size restriction. In addition, the file cannot be stored. For NTFS, it is more than 20 GB. The NTFS file system accident rate is very low compared to FAT32 format.

  • With the help of a backup on an external hard drive to transfer files to a new computer.

I recently got a new computer and I need to transfer my files via my new computer. Both computers running Windows 7. I have an external hard drive that has all my files from my old computer on it. I went into the control panel configuration, then system and security, and then in the backup and restore. I then clicked on "select another backup to restore files from" and looked for my external drive. I made sure that it was connected and up-to-date as well. However, he never showed up.

I would like to manually just transfer the files, but it seems as if there are readers split on this computer for 'BONES' and 'DATA '. For this reason, I'm not sure which car I'd put even files on.

How can I transfer these files?

    Hello

I understand that you are having problems with the restoration of the backup files of the external hard drive. Correct me if I misunderstood the question.

    (1) what is the version of Windows 7 is installed on your computer?

    (2) have you made changes on the computer before this problem?

    (3) you receive an error message when you try to restore?

I suggest you to consult and follow the steps in the links and check if the problem persists.

  • Satellite L670-1KZ - 3 TB external hard drive use - transfer rate.

    Hello world

This thread is a complement of my previous thread on 'Partition for 3 TB HD'.
    http://forums.computers.Toshiba-Europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=67275

As I said previously, I managed to merge the partition into one and I started the backup copy my blu - ray on my 3 TB, HD HD (usb / e-sata and e-sata / usb), my laptop HD (e-sata).

For your info, when you get to 2 TB (30 MB/s HD to HD and 50 MB/s laptop HD on average up to 2 TB),
the transfer rate is slowing down in hydro-huileuses, I now have around 10-15 MB/s average, of both laptop HD HD HD (now more than 10 to 15).

Fortunately, this will affect only around, 740 GB remainning to fill, but it's really annoying over time.

If someone can get a better transfer rate, please let me know (even on another laptop) your configuration.

This cursed 3 TB HD is very good for the ability, but a hell to answer when you use HD HD! I can't imagine for 4 TB HD.

I wonder what may be the transfer speed using usb3 since portable HD... And why he is so slow...

Oh, also, I forgot, I had a problem using this Storeva SilverDock U3 with the seagate 3 TB 7200 rpm on my laptop.

    1. it is impossible to disconnect using the safe disconnection. Whenever I switch on my laptop before off the dock. Never know that I won't take the risk to turn it off when it is connected to my laptop.

    2. when using this dock + my Antec MX-1 external box with inside 2 TB HD, I have some problems shooting with my files on the windows 'Explorer', the icon disappears, the image cannot be propely display (.jpg files).

Maybe a video card problem or a problem of electricity? I say what I'm going to fill this 3 TB as soon as possible and never plug it back to my laptop.

And, FYI, this dock + this HD is compatible with the H1 of Dune, the loading times are slightly longer than with a 2 to, used as internal or external on the Dune, maybe + 3/5 sec.

I bought a 7200 RPM, but everyone knows that the 7200 are prohibited for dune used as internal, M1
    must use only 5400 RPM.

I could make a Bernard for the temperature later and keep posted yu.
