    In addition, if the file is actually missing, you can try to boot from a UNIX / Linux Live CD like Knoppix and add/replace the file manually with a file from another PC running THE SAME VERSION OF WINDOWS!

    If you are not good with computers, you should ignore this option because it could cause serious problems. If you still want to try, and there is a hal.dll file in \system32\ BACK IT UP. You have to put back in place.

    If you get the message hal.dll missing, your system is still booting from the hard drive and do not boot from the XP Recovery Console CD (I hope that you have created).

    There is no hal.dll on the CD you made if all goes well.

    You must enter the BIOS of your system and make the first boot from the CD to your Pcakard device Bell looks like it firstly, instead to focus first on the HARD drive (make the drive the second choice for now).

    Searching the Internet, I found a message that says to enter the Packard Bell BIOS you must do this:

    Users of Packard Bell, you can access the BIOS set up by pressing the keys F1, F2 or del

    I don't have a PB, so I can't say for sure if that works, or what to do after that - you will need to look around the BIOS for things like the boot order boot priority, etc. and make the CD drive the first choice, second choice HARD drive, save the settings, then you can boot from the CD I hope that you have made using these instructions.

    Generally when the system detects a CD is inserted, it will sell you a message like this:

    Press any key to boot from CD...

    These can cause corruption in the file system that must be fixed before you do anything else.

    If none of these events occurred (or even if they have not taken place), you must verify the integrity of your file system before anything else (especially "try" things).
    There is zero logic to start try to copy files to a hard drive with a corrupted file system so corruption of file system must be fixed first using the XP chkdsk program and run chkdsk can solve your problem completely.
    Use the XP Recovery Console to check the file system on your HARD drive and fix the problems and then try to start your system - this may be all you need to do.  Or, you are welcome to just start trying things that might work.
    Start the Recovery Console Windows using an XP bootable installation CD, or create a bootable CD from the Console of the Recovery XP (no XP media required).
    A CD of XP Recovery Console is not the same as the recovery disks that may have come to a store to purchase the system.
    If you have any bootable CD to run the XP Recovery Console or that you are not sure what type of bootable CD you have, can create a bootable XP Recovery CD of Console and don't forget (no support for XP not necessary).
    If you need instructions to create a bootable XP Recovery CD of Console, we can predict that too (just ask).
    After booting into the Recovery Console, you should be in this folder:
    C:\WINDOWS
    For each of your hard disk partitions, you must then run:
    Chkdsk /r
    For example, at the Recovery Console prompt, enter:
    CHKDSK c: /r
    Let chkdsk finish to correct the problems, he could find.  It may take a long time to complete or seem to be 'glued '.  Be patient.  If the HARD drive light flashes, it's something.  Keep an eye on the amount of the percentage to be sure that it is still making progress.  It may even seem to go back sometime.
    The chkdsk/r must be completed without error, you may need to run several times until it does.
    Remove the CD, and then type "exit" to exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer and the report with your progress.

    It's extremely likely that you will need to replace the hal.dll and since there are seven files on the XP installation CD that will extend into hal.dll, which would you choose?  It depends on your hardware, but it is extremely likely that the problem (did I already say that?).  I've never had to replace a file hal.dll for this problem.

    The real problem is most likely that XP just can not find the file because of a file system corruption or a file c:\boot.ini afflicted.

    For this error, I would always be first boot from the XP Recovery Console and sometimes run a chkdsk-r that will fix things right to the top.

    If the chkdsk /r is clean and you have the same problem, and then re-create your c:\boot.ini file but rename the old one first so you don't build on top of those afflicted - this tidbit is absent from MS KB article that assumes too.

    You can do all this in the XP Recovery Console, but do go through these methods in this article and see how you go.

    For example, method 1 will not work if your system does not start.  You may have more luck with other "methods".

    If that doesn't work, then I suggest to provide a little more information about your system:

    The afflicted system has a working CD/DVD (internal or external) drive?

    But according to the ansver on the support line, it is too technical for me, I put the CD rom and pressing the "F2" on the keyboard it lead me to a blue page with 3 columns, vertical on the left side with a menu to select with: System, readers, devices on board, video... so onon the system one I tried the boot sequence but get stock there.

    This message is rather misleading.  It happens because the boot.ini file that tells where to look for 'Windows' boot is damaged, so it is looking for the files in the right place - hal.dll is be the first person he's looking for. Set the BIOS to boot CD before the hard drive.  Start the XP CD and at the installation site, take the immediate R for repair.  Assume that any requested password is empty.

    At the command prompt, type:

    H r s C:\boot.ini attrib [press Enter]
    DEL C:\boot.ini [press Enter] [to remove the bad]
    BootCfg /Rebuild [press Enter] [to search an installations of Windows, and make a new one]

    Remove the XP CD and hopefully restart Windows. MS - MVP - Elephant Boy computers - don't panic!

At startup in the bios it is that one illustrious disc which is my small storage disk not the large drive box and not CD drive.     What a mess!

    Are you saying that the PC does not see the CD drive? Or that Windows could not see it?
    What is the brand and model of your PC? Are you able to get into the BIOS to see if the CD drive is listed? If so, you can then change order of device for the start-up of the PC then it stops on the CD instead of the hard drive.

    The drive being SATA Seagate, I wonder if you need to make a setting in the BIOS.
    I also wonder what will happen if you remove the Seagate and equip the Maxtor, then start with the disks to run RC. I still think that the Maxtor drive has an MBR on it!
    I think that your first course of action is to see if this CD player works or not (independent of WIndows).
