Move contents from the old PC to new PC

Which is simplest and cleanest way to migrate all the content from my old PC (XP) to my new PC with Windows 8.1. Microsoft says it's to make a download available from Laplink (PCMover Express). This downloaded software will do the job if I connect the PC again to my router / FIOS network via an Ethernet cable and make the transfer of PC to PC over the network, or it would be more efficient to use the Laplink USB cable by buying their software?

It depends on what you mean by "everything."

In general, it is easy to move data files (e.g. documents, pictures, music, etc.) between machines, and if the machines are all connected to the same network, the copy on the network is the best way to accomplish the move (it is always prudent to copy, check the computer to see if everything is fine, and then delete the old computer instead of moving that automatically deletes the original files).

Some applications, such as Microsoft Windows Easy Transfer, move the 'parameters' as well as data.  For the most part, this includes things like the customizations of office and similar customizations; It may also include the "Favorites" browser, music playlists and so on.  These 'settings' are really more data files, but they are located in more obscure places and the average user probably don't know the files to move or where they need to go.

In general, you can not move the programs (applications).  These must be reinstalled (assuming they are compatible with the new version of Windows) using the original installation media (CD, DVD, downloaded the Setup file).  PCMover of Laplink, however, claims to be able to move the programs.  I've never used this product and I saw mixed reviews.  So if you either don't have installation media for your programs or you don't want to go through the resettlement process, read the reviews and decide if you want to take a chance on this program.

Whether you use the USB owner or your network, apparently PCMover will work with both.  The main difference will be the transfer speed, and this will depend on the type of network you have and the type of USB connection available.  Typical home networks now have a theoretical maximum throughput of 100 Mbps.  USB 2.0 has a theoretical maximum of 480 Mbps.  Gigabit networks are faster and so are USB 3.0 connections (although I think would be that does not support the USB Laplink USB 3.0 cable).  Here's what a 2010 review had to say on this subject:

With an external hard drive, USB2, we found it took about four hours to travel 30 GB of data, and beyond 100 Mbps Ethernet the same charge took more than a day of solid copy. Your best bet is a Gigabit LAN (if you have one) or the cable USB Laplink, which should in theory work around twice as fast as an external drive.

    you want to install more hard drive. How can I move all of the data, os, games, music, etc.

    and have computer always starts.

    Hello

    You cannot move by themselves programs

    you need to reinstall it from the original media

    read this about moving everything, including the operating system

    or save your data and reinstall clean vista

    There are different ways to do

    hard drive manufacturers will normally provide the cloning software to move your operating system installed from the old to the new hard disk

    Search for information on this subject on their Web site

    If you have vista business or ultimate, you can use the builtin vista complete PC Backup to move

    read the information below

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial145.html

    or if you have vista home version you'll need 3rd party software

    link below is an example of this:

    http://www.Acronis.com/homecomputing/products/TrueImage/index.html

    also to put your machine how you bought:

    1. that vista is preinstalled, you should have a recovery on your old hard drive partition

    You can recovery disks to reinstall on your new hard drive

    ask the manufacturer of the machine how

    2. contact the computer manufacturer and ask them to send you to vista recovery disks to reinstall the operating system back as it was when you bought it

    they do it for a nominal cost of $

    3. or borrow a microsoft dvd vista

    Make sure that you borrow the correct 32-bit or 64-bit microsoft dvd to your computer

    they contain all versions of vista

    This is the product key that determines which version of vista is installed

  • Loading the content of the old iPhone to new iPhone

    I was very disappointed when I tried to load the content from my old iPhone in my iPhone via iTunes. I received an error message saying something to the effect that my iPhone backup file was too old or obsolete. I had everything backed up my old iPhone an hour before. It would have saved me a lot of time if I could use this backup for my new iPhone. Very disappointing to have it loaded as a new iPhone (containing only the Apple iPhone applications.)

    Are you sure that you don't have a message indicating that the new phone could not use the old backup because the old backup contained a new version of the iOS the new phone has on it? You cannot restore a backup from a device running a newer iOS on a device with an older version of iOS on it. In this scenario, you must update the new phone to the latest version before you can use this backup.

  • Transfer of files from the old PC to new PC?

    Hello

    I am trying to transfer my profile of an old HP ProBook s 4430 to a Dell desktop all in one computer

    How can I do this? I'm sick of this slow computer! Help, please.

    Thank you in advance.

    Easy Transfer is correct.

    Easy transfer is a facility built into Windows 7, designed to transfer your data AND settings from the old to new PC.

    You will need an external USB hard drive.  Hook it up and get it recognized by the old system.

    Click on the starting planet

    Simple type in the text box that appears

    Select and click Easy transfer

    From there, it is easy to follow.

    It creates a large file with everything what it.  Works like a charm.  I use it all the time and have for years.  Also works for the passage to a new hard drive.  It will take a while on the OLD computer, but it's walk and come back later thing.  Works much faster on the new.  Helps a lot if you use your USB 3 port and that you have an external hard drive that supports USB3.

  • I need to move content from an old account to a new account on my IMac

    Hello

    When I imported all my old files / images / iTunes on my windows to my IMac desktop, he created 2 accounts.  The account that I don't use my library iTunes in it and other files etc...  I need to move the contents of my ITunes library on my current account - both on the same currency.  Grateful for any advice... Thank you

    Hello FMATB,

    Please ask for help here in the Apple Support communities. I will be happy to provide you with options for you to do all your account data on your iMac, the account that you usually use on the same computer.

    The more simple since you already have now all the data on the same computer, a little less than two different accounts, is to locate and organize your iTunes Media folder in the unused account. This article helps Apple will help you ensure that all of your songs, playlists, play counts, and library is consolidated and ready to go: locate and organize your iTunes files.

    Once this is done, this help article has a few options, and it also offers images to help you move the library using an external hard drive or flash (USB key). How to move your iTunes library to a new computer. "Since the data are on the same computer, just under different accounts, I recommend that you check" part 3: copy the backup to iTunes on your new computer ", but you can use the hard disc or flash drive (thumb) method, or you can use the Shared folder, located in the Finder, Macintosh HD, users shared.

    Either option will help you to fill in moving your music from the unused account and put it in your main account. Be aware, that if you currently have music on your main account, it will ask to replace the file, or place it with all your other data. If you replace the data, music and data that you will only be of the second account. If you add, when you open iTunes, you still can't see your music until you pass the library. If you need spend libraries, see this help article: Open a different iTunes library file or create a new.

    Thank you and have a great rest of your day.

  • Copy-move content from the C drive to a new larger disk? (space)

    I have Windows XP and other applications and data files on a hard drive a little lack of space and would like to copy on a larger drive (500 GB), there are commercial software on the market by Acronis that will do that; However, I was thinking about this method that uses the copy program. This will work.

    1. install the new drive as slave.

    2. make a bootable XP floppy or flash drive.

    3. go to the root of the old drive and select all the files in the Explorer.

    4 locate the WIN386. SWP file and unselect by using the CTRL key.

    5 copy all old drive to the new drive.

    6. remove the old drive and change new master drive.

    7. new boot disk.

    8. If startup does not work, start by using the startup disk or a flash drive.

    9. to invite him back, type "Sys C:".

    10. Remove boot floppy/flash drive and charge it.

    11. If this does not work, buy commercial software.

    10 first steps will work? It would be certainly much cheaper, but if I know that it won't it allow me to save a lot of time and unnecessary copying.

    Do not work, unless your disks are both in the FAT32 format - and you can only do with a 500 GB drive

    Your best shot would be to use a correct application of cloning or patition manager to do the work for you.

    Some have a free trial that will work before it runs out.

  • Connection from the old HD to new PC

    My new HP desktop uses the interface SATA series for all readers. I had a good look at the motherboard in the store where I bought it, because I had little RAM added on. My old PC died of old age and won't even POST, but I'm sure that the HD is OK and it contains a lot of files, I want to keep on the new PC. The old HD is parallel PATA. How can I connect it to my new PC to upload my files? I don't want to get into the new PC, since it is under warranty and has these stickers on it, so I figure I need to interface the HD via a USB port. This means, obviously, that I need some sort of converter to convert PATA USB flat ribbon cable and also the HD feed. I guess that these devices exist, but have not found a locally. Suggestions for a good reliable device that can do what I need, preferably a product HP, if it is available? Thanks in advance!

  • JS/CS3 move content from the previous table cell

    I'm trying to create a script that needs to find and cut some content of the cell and paste it into the previous cell. For example, $12 333.  The sign $ should be in the previous cell, while the number is expected to keep to its location. I am new to the script and my script does not work like that. Help, please.

    myDoc var = app.activeDocument;

    app.findTextPreferences = app.changeTextPreferences = null;
    app.findTextPreferences.findWhat = "$";
    var myFound = myDoc.findText ();

    for (i = myFound.length - 1; i > = 0; i--)
    {
    myFound [i] .insertionPoints [0] .select ();
    .silence .insertionPoints [0] myFound [i] = ' $';
    }

    Avoid copy/cut and paste If you can. In your script, it seems that you don't need. In a table, parent of the text is a cell. The cells have a parentColumn and a parentRow.

    for (I = myFound.length - 1; i > = 0; i--)
    {
    MyCell = .parent myFound [i];
    myFound [i] .characters [0] .abolish ();
    .silence myCell.parentRow.cells [myCell.parentColumn.index - 1] = ' $';
    }

    Adobe products must be installed by using installation files - they cannot be moved between machines.  Your license allows installation enabled on both machines so there is no need to do anything on the original, except if you wish to cancel the ability to work with her.
