Move virtual machines from a to another data store

Is there a recommended (or integrated) way to move propelled out of virtual machines from a data store? Or is it a cut simple and working of dough which can be done from any client PC connected to the underlying storage providers?

If both, store data Source and Destination are connected to the same server vCenter, do Storage vMotion. Make a right-click VM--> migrate--> change of data store and select the Destination data store.

  • How to move virtual machines from one host to another without full VI and vMotion?

    Hello

could you help me with a question?

I have two installed hosts with ESXi 3.5 U5, which are connected to the shared iSCSI (Openfiler) - VMs storage are installed on the storage disk. My requirement is to have a cheap solution of DR - in case of failure of a host, I need to move and start VM on the host of work. How to achieve without going through VMware Infrastructure 3.5 and vMotion?

    I found this article:

    http://www.virtualizetips.com/2010/04/how-to-move-a-VM-without-vCenter-or-storage-VMotion/

but RCLI needs Infrastructure of VMware ESXi does not have default CLI So, how to move VMs between hosts (of course I mean "cold" move) without byuing any additonal VMware SW? It is generally possible in my situation?

    Thank you.

If the virtual machines are running in shared storage (two guests see the same storage iSCSI or NFS) then it's simple. If a host goes down, then look for the data store on the ESXi host work. Navigate through folders for each virtual machine, right-click on the VMX file and add to the inventory. You will then be able to turn on the virtual machine.

To move a virtual machine from one host to another, as long as both hosts had the same processors, you can pause the VM on the single host, browse and add the virtual machine to the inventory on the second break host and the United Nations.

If the virtual machines are on local storage, but the two hosts are connected to the same shared storage, clone virtual machines on a daily basis from local storage to shared storage. Use something like ghettoVCB http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-8760 make the clone. In the case of a server failure, you will be able to browse the data store, add to the inventory on the shared storage and switch the cloned machine.

  • Simple Question - How to move virtual machines from 1 box to another?

    Hello

I'm new to VMware products so please bare my stupidity.

I have 2 servers I received vSphere on. They have all two internal storage (SAN No. still ) which means I can't take advantage of vMotion. So that leaves me to figure out how would one move a Virtual Machine from one box to the other? I currently have two boxes configured with a vCenter Server under 1 datacenter server.

The simplest solution (considering vCenter) is cold using migrate operation.

  • Migrated virtual machine appears in the two data stores

    Hi all

A bit of background on our installation first. servers ESX 3.5 vcenter 4.0 (just improved 2.5) + 2 + 2 data warehouses configured in 1 box of MSA.

Here is what happened. I've migrated a VM from A to B data store using "Migrate" in vSphere client on vCenter.

On the vSphere client, virtual machine displays now two data warehouses. In the browser data store, the vme even appears in the two data stores. Datastore shows 20 GB to 20 GB provisioned and 0 GB to 20 GB used. B displays 20 of 20 put into service and used 20 20 GB.

Migration seems to have succeeded. I migrated about 10 other vm and they reside only on a data store. All virtual machines are working properly. I tried to migrate the computer back to A virtual. He showed only a data store. But the problem appeared again when I migrated the vm to B. I tried to move the virtual machine back and forth between servers ESX, no difference.

Any ideas? The virtual machine is working well, and it is not necessarily a critical problem. But it's annoying, because I intend to reorganize the data store has and the fear it could cause a problem.

Thank you so much in advance!

  • move a virtual machine from one to another logic unit number

    Here is the environment:

    -ESXi Server

    -ISCI in a SAN

-the SAN consists of the 3 LUNS (data warehouses)

-the virtual machine is stored on the LUN #3

-the virtual machine is the first drive on the #3 LUN and the second drive on the LUN #2

-I would like to move all the contents of the virtual machine of the #3 to the LUN #2 LUN

-I have no vMotion or vCentre, just the plain ESXi 3.5

Since I am new to this, I have a concern consider so that it starts the virtual machine after the move, and there are fears a possible fragmentation.

I have not found a similar thread that covers the same setup here, that's why I'm here.

    Thank you.

    I'd do it:

-Detach the first disk of the virtual machine

-Remove the VM of the inventory

-Explore data warehouses and move all the files to lun 2

-Add once again the VM on the inventory (right click on the VMX file)

-Add once again the first pre-existing disk

  • How can I move virtual machines from a local data store for a new iSCSI SAN?

    Hello guys,.

Now that we have a new iSCSI SAN market how can I tranfer all the virtual machine to a local data store for a new SAN? Can I stop the VM in the host, and then copy the DataStore files with all the info on the new volume?

    Thank you

Alternatively, you can use VMware converter or cold Migration / Storage VMotion if you have the appropriate licenses.

  • Move virtual machines from one position to another

We currently have and ESX server running version 4. We will receive 3-4 physical servers that are using ESX version 3.5 each housing 15 or so virtual servers. Command post that controls these new virtual machines will not be moved with the rest of the equipment. We will need to add these servers to our environment vSphere 4 current. Is this possible? If so, what are the steps needed to achieve this? Is there a documentation can someone indicate which would explain me how to proceed? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

you are the hosts and Clusters view?  This is where you need to "add host".

  • Storage DRS, move a virtual machine that is in the data store is not a member of DTS

    Dear all,

If I've set up storage DRS that contains, for example, DS1 and DS2. I have another virtual machine that resides on DS that is not part of the cluster of DTS. Can I move this virtual machine to one of the (DS1, DS2) data store? OR will some disruptions?

    Thank you

    Jocelyn,

Which is correct in both cases. You can leave DTS place it for you (which is my suggestion), but I thought you wanted it to go to a specific data store.  That being said you can reactivate the DTS for a virtual machine under the SDR change settings if you do not ever clear for a virtual machine

  • Move drive VM to a to another data store

    Hi guys,.

In my environment, we divided the data banks on two virtual machines. I'm migrating all the drives in a data store to another by using the following code.

    Mr G

    Hello

as commented, there maybe more than 2 with the name "f1aa01_nfs_hoss01" data warehouses (in different hosts).

When using powercli, that's not a good practice to have more than one data store with the same name.

You must change the name of the data store (s), in order to have a single data store with the same name.

Until you do this, the powercli script will fail!

  • How to create the new virtual machine vm existing in the data store on ESXI

I have ESXi and couple of virtual machines.

I have the vsphere client on Windows 7.

I then deploy the ovf from the vsphere client vm and it began to import my VM 30 GB.

In the morning, I realized my vm with a vmdk file file has been transferred in the data store

But I couldn't see any virtual computer.

Now I don't know how to turn on this vmdk file that is in my data store

  • Could not start the new virtual machine or VM remove a data store

    Hi guys,.

I'm not new with ESXi, but my knowledge with vCenter and Clustering must be improved, so here's my problem.

We have a Cluster of 2 ESXi 4.1 hosts on a San with 2 VMFS.

My first problem is when I created a new virtual machine and try to start it, I got an error message similar to the one included with this post.

My Second problem is more picky. Since I am unable to start my new virtual machine, I had removed from drive and I had created a new. But when I took a peek in the data store where was deleted VM, the directory with all the files are still there. When I try to delete it, I got an error message telling me that it is impossible to proceed.

    Q please?

    Best regards

    Stéphane

82% of failure can be other issues.  The article below

    http://KB.VMware.com/kb/1006052

Also, I saw, where bad records DB for your ESXi hosts can cause weird problems as well.  The host with the problematic guest, can you do a right click on it and "disconnect"?  Try to get out of the bunch at the data center level.  If you get an error vCenter, that means return folder DB.  From there, while the host is in a disconnected state, remove the host to vCenter, then "add host". This will update the DB record.  Maybe worth it?

  • Moving files from VirtualCenter in another data store

    Hello

I'm running my VirtualCenter server as a VM and it's vm files are stored on a data store that is on our SAN.

Now I want to migrate the server to another store of data also on the SAN.

Could someone please explain to me the steps? I looked at a number of articles, son and they speak using vmkfstools but none of them are specific to the VC.

    Thank you

    Hi Keith,

That wasn't supposed to happen!  Can you connect to the VC via RDP and use the VI client it?  You have to probably close and reopen the VI client for this plugin tobe recognized...?  The problem is persistent?

Anything in the VC / VI client opens a session?

  • Download of virtual machine using extremely slow browser data store

    Hello

Why download VM files totalling nearly only 8 GB in vSphere Client v4.1.0 (from 4.1.0 ESXi) via a Gigabit LAN would take more than 1800 minutes (30 hours)? Well now after about 5-10 minutes to download, it is said 1560 minutes but still, why is it so slow? I thought that perhaps is that the estimated time remaining is miscalculated, but this isn't the case. The download is just extremely slow.

Not only that but vSphere Client (VpxClient.exe) constantly uses 25-45% of my cycles while all CPU's do the downloading of files. This slows down the PC I am running vSphere Client. The local network on the server and the client connections are Gigabit too.

UPDATE: download time now has increased up to 1924 minutes back and it becomes difficult to use my PC for e-mail in Outlook, etc. because vSphere Client seems to use as many cycles CPU.

UPDATE 2: 2 hours for download via vSphere Client and remaining time jumped up to 2287 minutes. I'm going to cancel and try to download via the web browser interface.

    See the attached screenshots.

    Thank you

    Derek
