  What you are trying to download is an update to El Capitan, which requires that El Capitan already installed.

  You should find the correct Installer for El Capitan in the Apple store under the purchased tab.

  JJ, it seems that for a 27 "monitor native resolution is 1920 x 1200.  Maximum resolution of the GeForce 7100 is 1920 x 1440.  Therefore, it should work with the monitor.  You will get the best quality because VGA Analog and DVI is digital.  Using an adapter is not the best way to connect a monitor.

  I hate to say it, but it would be a great time for a bigger hard drive.  While 40 GB meets at least for installation you really need more for in-place-upgrading a system using 37 GB.  Setup needs space for temporary files, its own temporary relocation, etc.
