  Mute key functionality is provided by IDT Audio software, so the problem may be that Windows 8 has installed a reference driver that does not contain.  Often, the Windows 7 version works Ok, so I would try downloading and installing the following driver IDT.

  Good to hear! I think you should be able to use the trackpad however. I think I remember to make it work on Mac a friends (first one I've listed below, in this web page)-use two fingers and tap the trackpad.
