my computer says printer ready, but when I try to print it does not say connectedit is a HP 3000 3 month old.

I have a wireless printer. On the computer it says ready, but when I try to print it says not connected. Help

Print a Network Setup page using the controls on the front panel of the printer.  See your manual for details.  Some newer HP printers have very summary User Guides (if you have the Deskjet 3000 J310, this means you) and it is difficult to see how - or if - you can print a Network Setup page.

What you want to do is (a) determine the IP address that is currently configured in the printer and potentially re - configure an IP address of your choice.  You may need to search in the help for the printer on your computer system.  You may be able to access the printer setup utility using your Internet browser or you need maybe connect you the printer to the computer via USB and use the printer installation CD.

Once you know what the IP address of the printer (and, preferably, how to change), then...

On your computer.

  • Click Start > printers and faxes
  • Right click on your printer icon, and then select Properties
  • Click on the Ports tab
  • Taking care NOT to click in the list of ports (where you might accidentally change something), click Configure Port
  • Compare the IP address in the box "printer name or IP address.
  • If the IP in the box is not the same as the one you have determined for the printer, make sure.
  • OK your way out and you should be able to print.

Now... If the above has solved your problem, you might want to know why and probably would like to know how to prevent it from happening again.  Him 'why' is normally your wireless router automatically sets the IP address of the printer.  If you turn the printer off, there is no guarantee that the router will assign the same IP address when you turn back on it, especially if the other devices were connected to your router in the meantime.  There are two methods to deal with this.

One, you can check the checkbox in the tab "Configure Ports" which always says 'print to this device, even if its IP address changes.'  This is a feature that the HP printer drivers have, but in my experience, it is not reliable.  It works probably better if you change the contents of the box of the IP address of the printer "hostname."  This is something that you should be able to find in the printer setup utility accessed through your web browser.  It is NOT the name of 'Port' that appears on the "Port Configuration" tab in the area above the IP address.

Two, you can change the way that the printer receives his usual default IP (automatic) address manual, otherwise known as a static IP address.  If you do this, you will need to choose an IP address that is in the same subnet as your router (this means that the first 3 of the 4 series of numbers of the IP address must be the same).  For example, if the IP address assigned to your printer is 192.168.1.105, then any IP address that you select for use as a static IP address for this printer must begin with 192.168.1.  The last part may be any number of through254 2, EXCEPT that it may not be a number this router can assign to something else.  You will find this bit of your router configuration utility.  Or, if your printer was awarded automatically an address with the last part as 100, 101, 102, 103, etc, you'll be pretty reliable if you choose a number far away, but still within the range (for example, 25, 50, 200).
