My desktop icons and toolbar and start programs disappeered after getting a virus.

I deleted the virus.

No idea how to get back them?

Hi Matt,
Some infections of virus/malware will hide all files and shortcuts on your computer. To make your files visible again, download display on your desktop.

Once downloaded, double-click display and let it run. It removes the attribute hidden on all files and attempt to restore items in quick launch and Start Menu to their location.
If you think that your computer is still infected, try following the steps in this virus/malware removal guide: http://www.selectrealsecurity.com/malware-removal-guide
It contains instructions which will remove most malware infections. If you have any questions, just ask me. I hope this helps you.

    Hello

Have you done any software or changes to the material on the computer before this problem?

Method 1: First of all, I suggest you perform a virus scan on your computer online by visiting the following link:
    Microsoft Safety Scanner
    http://www.Microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Note: The Microsoft Safety Scanner ends 10 days after being downloaded. To restart a scan with the latest definitions of anti-malware, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.
Note: The data files that are infected must be cleaned only by removing the file completely, which means that there is a risk of data loss.

Method 2: Run the following Fix - it and check.
Difficulty of broken desktop shortcuts and common system maintenance tasks

If the problem persists, then follow hide icon to rebuild the steps mentioned - below
    a. click Start, then Control Panel and write in the search folder optionsbox.
    b. now, click on Folder Options to open and select (dot) show hidden files and folders.
    c. open a Windows Explorer window.
    d. go on C:\Users\(User Name) \AppData\Local
    e. right click on IconCache.db , and click Remove.
    f. click Yes to confirm the deletion.
NOTE: This removes the file to the trash. It is safe to empty the trash when you are done.
    g. close the window.
    h. emptying the trash.
    i. restart the computer.
    j. When you come back, you will notice the size of the file IconCache.db is reduced, and the update is now the current date.
NOTE: If for some reason any IconCache.db isn't there or the size has not much changed then you can just restart the computer again. You may need to restart a few times in some cases.
    k. icon cache will be rebuilt.

Method 3: If the methods above do not help, you can check if the link helps you solve the problem.

Note: FixIt would attempt to recover bad sectors on the hard disk, in the course of this process there are chances of DATA loss from that particular area.

    1. what happens when you try to run the fixit?

    2. you try to run the fixit in Internet explore?

Meet the old thread that it would create threads in double for the same question.

Try running the fixit in method 2 and check whether the problem is resolved or not.

  • Desktop icons and the trash disappeared after disk cleanup

Original title: info gone forever with disk cleanup?

I have a dell latitude d 600.  My boyfriend hit the disk Cleanup wizard.  Now I'm not sure how much information that I lost.  Where did my desktop icons? I'm not in re cycle bin, where is he at?

    Hi georgeholly,

Disk Cleanup only removes temporary files, empty the Recycle Bin, and removes a variety of file system and other items that you no longer need.

So you would have not lost any critical information from your computer.

For more information on what disk cleanup, see the following article:

  • All my desktop icons and start to changed to .lnk and are white dish after restart and Windows Update.

I restarted the computer after the update from Windows and I cannot now access all programs using the icons. Internet Explorer can be accessed via the help and support and by clicking on one of the help of suggestions. Photoshop can be run from the program file, like others I tried then there is nothing wrong with the programs.

I tried to use lnk_fix_w7which that I don't know what to do with and unassoc_1_4 does not work as it does not show .lnk lists when I run. I can't use system restore because it has not worked for some time. Anyone can suggest a remedy to this problem or would it be easier to reformat?

    James.

Try to download the lnk patch from the following link. It's a zipfile, extract it and launch the file extracted.

    http://www.Winhelponline.com/blog/file-Asso-fixes-for-Windows-7/

If you face any problem in extracting the zip file, try to create the new user account, extracted the file and return to the corrupt lnk journal account and run the registry file (.reg).

  • Windows 7 64 bit, start slowing down, the desktop icons and taskbar of loading very slowly since last week!

so first, I'll start with my system features:

    Reference Dell Xps15z
    Intel Core i7 - 2640M to 2.8 ghz
    NVIDIA GT525M 2 GB
    8 GB RAM
Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 64-bit
    Samsung PM830 SSD 2.5 "7 GB 218, 42 GB of free
My laptop is now just a year and plays well outside some blue screen errors that have been fixed. The question now is time to start being significantly slower, especially the loading of the office. It takes 15 seconds to the password screen, to 45 seconds to reach the office and another 45 seconds to the taskbar, icons and things on the desktop to load. What is unusual is that during this black screen, my mouse is displayed, as well as for Advanced System Care 6 performance monitor (I doubt that this is the problem as I had installed for some time). I did the troubleshooting on mine and removed about half of my program without success. I also checked the health and performance of my SSD with SSD and SSD life and both seem to be very positive. I did not any changes to the Bios because I don't want to reinstall my OS and I'm not really sure on workarounds.
I tried also to the difficulty of the task of explorer.exe, by checking the value of shell in the registry and it is correct, that it just load slowly at the start and each time I kill and then open it again in the Task Manager. Therefore, I think that my main problem is with explorer.exe loading slowly for some reason, I also removed some desktop icons and taskbar, although I doubt that it makes much difference.
I've also done many scans with malware bytes pro and hitman pro, there is no virus on my computer.
I appreciate any help, as it is very inconvenient for my more than 90 seconds start time, when he was about 20 when the laptop was new.
Thank you very much for your help!
P.S. I have about 60 GB of games installed on my pc via steam, if it makes a difference to delete some

When my Windows 7 is slow to start, I do the following:

Start, then in the search box, type of race. In run, type "msconfig"(sans guillemets), and then click OK. ""
In the general tab, make sure that selective startup is selected.
Under Selective startup, clear the check box load startup items.
Then go to the Startup tab and disable everything except software antivirus and important such as the microsoft. In addition, DO NOT disable any program that you do not recognize.
This will disable any unnecessary background programs and prevent to launch at startup.
NOTE: you can still start programs even if they do not start at startup. For example, your favorite game is one of them, and you the disabled. Now, the game does not start at startup, but if you click on the game icon later, it will always start, except maybe a bit slower when it starts. Basically, you are delaying the start of programmes which does not need to start at startup, you move a part of the start-up BACK period. The only programs that you do not disable is programs that actually need to start (like if it starts your computer will blow or something similar).
  • The desktop icons and taskbar disappear when windows has finished starting - any of the usual things help

I have a Windows XP Home Edition with a breath main card computer.  Replaced the Board, PS and other items.  Then re-activated windows and everything was fine.  Until the last moment, I rebooted after activating it.  I have the problem that I have seen posted in a bit.  When Windows has finished initializing all the desktop icons and task bar etc. disappear.  Nothing works.

I can bring up the Task Manager and manually run programs, etc.

Believe me when I say I spent reviewing EACH reference to this problem... Yes 5 days and counting... Tried them all.

I also tried a repair of windows in place which ends without any problem (twice)... but still no icons or taskbar.  I also ran several controls of virus, including one for the virus, which is usually the cause of this problem.  (fsnimda3.exe), I tried all the ideas in another thread (page 9) and many other institutions.  Before I did the reconstruction of the material I've cloned the original hard drive and have used the disc cloned juggling his original for the back.  Even tried to reinstall the old disk and do a comparison of sector by sector, in the case where my cloning process missed something.  In the 30 years I've been in the computer business I have never had a re - format a hard drive to solve a problem.  BUT I think it will break my record.

I'm doing this as a favor for a friend.  But at this point our friendship is really put to the test

  • How can I restore my desktop icons and the taskbar icons

I tried to open a file with a program's .lnk and her was not recognized in the program, and now my desktop icons and my icons to the taskbar was converted into icons for the program. How to get this back? I need to know how to do this in Windows 7.

    [Moved from comments]

There are some patches for the issue that you siding, but most of them requires registry changes that I do not say that they can cause several other problems. I recommend that you perform a system restore.

There are two ways to perform the system restore:

Menu start open, click Run and type cmd to open the command prompt.

Type CD... to book only c:\.

Type windows CD then CD System32, and then restore.

    After once, you'll find yourself in c:\ windows\system32\restore >

    Type restrui.exe press ENTER.

Once the system restore the open window then click on next to select any available restore point.

This process takes a few minutes to do the restore and please make sure that once this process has begun there wont be reversible and or you will lose all personal data.

Another way to perform the system restore is to open the safe mode by clicking on F8 at startup and check the option of safe mode, then still a dialog box opens to ask the system restore and then follow the steps above.

  • Desktop icons and lack of startmenu

Something happened after my last reboot... and now my office just has an image quite fall, NO start menu, NO desktop icons, nothing.  It's like my current wallpaper covered (or hidden in some way) on my screen.  The last thing I did was to change my properties (topic, etc., I wanted to just look at a different background for awhile).  Everything was going well, I'm really good on execution of the antivirus, my disk, defragmentation, etc cleanup scans my PC (XP Pro, about 10 years old) is slow, but works well.   I had to reboot due to a security upgrade and subsequently, the OLD background came (autumn leaves, which was my experience about 4 months ago (why?), I change my desktop background every month, so why this old came after the restart, "ghost in the machine", I guess.)  The only thing I can do to access what all is to ctrl-alt-del to get the Task Manager and run commands from there (new task), not exactly the best way to do things, better than nothing.  Just before the restart, I did a symantec full virus scan, and everything seemed OK. Honestly I would just throw the thing out the window, but I just bought a new PC and really just transfer the photos from my child (ONLY of the COPIES I have about 2000 of them) and some documents.  I have a clickfree, works very well on the new PC, but does nothing when I plug it into the good old XP Pro PC.  I should just plug my old pc into my new, press a button and be able to transfer all my old stuff - which was anyway the room.  I know the info is there, but I can't to anything except the Task Manager. How can I get my Start menu, the desktop icons, etc., I feel that if I could get rid of this darn background, maybe I could see my real screen again.   I have a Microsoft disc, but when I plug it in, nothing happens.  I'm completely stunned.  I just want to get a start menu, or something so that I can transfer my old files over my new PC.  Can anyone help, pretty please? I can't get to anything, but it's all there, said the Task Manager.  This is of course a new one on me.  If anyone can help, I would be eternally grateful.  Dinner is on me.

    Signed: "fubar in FW.

what you might try is to launch the task again Manager.

except go to the processes tab and kill all instances of explorer.exe

Then go to the tab and the launch as a new task: explorer.exe
