My hard drive is defective?

I have a MacBook Pro 13 "(middle of the 2012 model year) running El Capitan.  I recently upgraded to the latest version of Mac OS X (10.11.1) and upgraded my RAM from 8 GB to 16 GB after than what I assumed it was the slow upgrade my system considerably.  It is probably interesting to note that the system does not lock during the update, but a reboot fixed it and he was able to finish.  Update does not seem to make a huge difference with the boot time or launching applications, but the tasks such as rendering in Final Cut Pro X seemed a lot more quickly. However, iTunes is a little weird now, which seems odd to me.  Fast forward to Friday this week.  I used my Mac at work and everything was working well on it. I come home late tonight there, wake up the machine, try to connect with my password and I'm greeted with a reel. After waiting several minutes for the system to thaw, I press the power button and attempt to restart. When the screen returns to the top, it is completely grey for about 3 minutes, and then I get a flashing folder with a question mark on the subject saying that the machine cannot locate the operating system.

What I found is that by removing the disk and plug into the USB port using a SATA data/power connectivity kit the system booted to fine (at least for now) and works about the same as if the reader was always connected internally.  However, if I accidentally drop the drive while it is running (even slightly) or tilt the drive a little, there is an audible 'click' and then the system hangs until I have force a shutdown and restart.

I wonder if anyone has an idea as to if it is a mechanical failure in the drive itself, a ribbon cable problem (since using a kit USB solves the problem with the player not recognized), a combination of those two things, or something else entirely.  Having two variables to work here, I don't know where to start with the problem.

Any suggestion or idea would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you all!

* P.S. The hard drive is the stock HGST 5400 RPM, 2.5-inch, 9.5 mm

I wouldn't trust this drive. A new drive is not that expensive and well worth the peace of mind.

  • Toshiba Satellite S50 - A - is dead HARD drive?

Hello.. I hope I can get some answers from other owners of S50 - A or least maybe a tech?... are these discs defective or only supposed to last two years so you get out of your wallet again so Toshiba infiltrates the money from you?

My father bought this laptop for me for the College and school so I can work and play at the same time it's about 2 years old...

    Model of care &: S50 - A Satellite, model # PSKKEC - 00G 007 - Intel i5 - Geforce GTX A 740 m - to-SATA 1.

2 years... Since purchasing computers laptops are pretty perfect, I have done regular upward Dungeon defragments hard-ware/anti virus scans and every quarter I ran across a sweep of care system advanced... everything was fine.

The only games I play quite a lot on this laptop is counter-strike Global Offensive by H1Z1... a week ago, I was on teamspeak and it said that I had a driver error and tells me to restart, I did... and that's where it went all down hill...

I had a lot of mistakes, lack of funds etc., tried to do a reset from the pc, is not called zero also tried to try a restore of the system without success... hard disk started vibrating and making a 'written' sound (as the disc has been actively writing incredibly fast..) it was so distorted, I couldn't save any recent stuff... (last back up I did was about 3-4 months before)... no all my photos & academic materials are uploaded to servers online, so I was Biggie don't like meh, whatever... I listen to music on spotify so care to lose all that.

My only option was to format the disk and do a clean install... what worked for one week... was able to update all my drivers download/install geforce experience and my anti virus program, log in to my school credentials and downloaded steam... everything was going a lot and yesterday after a session of one hour of h1z1 I quit the game and when I tried to open my browser google chrome that nothing answered, the button start to reset would not answer the computer literally just does not react anymore than all...

Forced a restart and got bsod - unmountable_boot_volume - entered the command... prompt he says pretty well sound replacing each bad cluster known to man... nothing was fixed/repaired... do you have a chkdsk c:/r/f and got this - an unspecified error 766f6c756d652e63 3f1

I am ready to throw in the towel on this... I guess that Toshiba gives a 1 year warranty on all hardware related Articles?... so there is no point in calling me to and ship unless I want to pay an arm and one leg for another 1 TB sata-one that will only last another 2 years?... or should I go to some place local tech and get them to install a crucial 2.5 "500 GB SSD?

People of any options?... I am open for them.

    Thanks for reading,

    See you soon.

    HARD drive seems defective.
SSD is a good choice, but avoid those that use a starforce controller, since they have more problems than others.
The Intel and Samsung SSD seem to be the most compatible.

  • Tecra A2 used power up after upgrading the hard drive

I have a Toshiba Tecra A2. Hard drive 60 GB factory begins to run out, so I installed a new 160 GB drive.

But the system will not power on with the 160GB inside.
When I press the power button the AC light goes from green to orange and blinks short short short Long Long Long in this sequence

If I put the original drive, it does not supply power to the top.

Any ideas what I can do about it? I got tired of updating bios on Toshiba website, but he has not made a difference.

    Thank you

    Hi DenSys,

    > Any ideas what I can do about it?
In my opinion, the case is clear: either this new HARD drive is defective or it s is not compatible to your laptop. But if everything works with the old HDD, you contact the new 160 GB back

Your laptop has an IDE interface for HARD drive? If so don t forget that it will be able to manage the hard disks up to 128 GB only due limitation LBA 28 bits. In order to check another model.

    Hello

My HARD drive sometimes creates similar sounds.
I'm not quite sure about this sound but I save data always because some time ago one of my hard drives is dead and I could lose all my data so I would not have some backups created in the past of m

I recommend doing the same thing
Who knows what s wrong with the HARD drive, but I know with certainty that sooner or later all hard disks will die

  • Satellite A200 PSAF6A - HARD drive is not recognized. No recovery of product

The drive HARD in my Toshiba Satellite A200 PSAF6A-0US01N is not recognized in the machine or any other computer, so I can't run any windows/toshiba repair.

I know that readers have a factory reset hidden on the disc and press 0 to the power upward, but with the unreadable disk, how can I repair my installation of Windows Vista?

    Hello

If the HARD drive is not recognized by the BIOS or other laptops, then I would say that your HARD drive is defective.
In this case, you need to replace the HARD drive.
In this case, you will not be able to start the recovery procedure from the HARD drive because it works badly as he has already said

Are you from the Australia? If you need a recovery disk, I recommend contacting the local Toshiba ASP to get this drive

  • With the help of product recovery CD when the hard drive replaced

    Hi all

It seems that my hard drive is defective, so I bought a replacement, installed in the laptop OK and tried to use the Toshiba product recovery disc. The laptop started with the disc OK and recovery of product starting screen appeared and I started the process. The process starts, but then crashes and no matter how much time wait nothing further happens.

I put the defective hard drive, back to and started on the recovery disk and it started and the process started OK.

The recovery disc can not be used on a replacement hard drive? Surely, this is possible, as hard drives do fail and must be replaced.

Can someone tell me how to fix it please?

    Thanks in advance!

In General, you can use recovery image after replacing HARD drive. I did the same thing on my machine.
It was: is the new HARD drive recognized properly? After Exchange of HDD enter BIOS and check this.
Before you begin the recovery image installation if please try to set the BIOS to the default settings and try reinstalling the recovery image.

  • Possible problem HARD drive - by clicking on the sound and the system hangs on Qosmio G30 - 116

    Hello

I just got my G30-116 return of service (replacement of the screen) and after 2 days another problem. He just continues to hang out.

I do not change a thing since I got it and now it just stop working on things sometimes like browsing the internet. It has not happened before. And my biggest concern is the trigger that made my hard drive.

What can be wrong? It not crash until I have it sent to the service, I think that my hard drive is defective... Thank you

What to say? If you can not find out why freeze the problem occurs, try to preinstall the operating system with recovery DVDs delivered.

In any case, from your description, I'm afraid there is a serious problem with HARD drive and it can be simply worse then now. Please be sure that your data is backed up.

Please contact service again and explain the situation. If the HARD drive is faulty, you will get a new, and if they have the HARD drive on stock, it can be replaced very quickly. G30 is lovely and I hope that you will be satisfied. A few days ago my friend visited me and we have tested his G30 with HD-DVD player on my LCD TV. I can tell you one thing: I am really impressed with the HD picture quality.

    Good luck!

About 3 months ago I bought a hard drive of PC world 500GBexternal (not sure of the model number, this is money, with external power supply, USB cable A B, very bright blue light on the front, about 60 pounds). I used it regularly both with my PS3 and my Toshiba Vista laptop.

Suddenly it has stopped working. The blue light is on, and noise workout like its spinning but when I plug my devices nothing don't recognize. I tried with the laptop, PS3 and IMAC. Blue light beeps when you plug it into the USB port but that's all. The device don't can't see it!

I tried a new USB cable, but it made no difference

Please help me. I've got the years worth of photos, music and movies out there that I can't lose!

    Thank you

    Hi Simon,.

You have only stored the data on that HARD disk? Normally all files must be stored on a second disc, otherwise it s not a backup! ;)

Anyway, you can see the external drive in Windows disk management?
The external HARD drive is always turn vertically?

At the moment it sounds like it's HARD drive is defective and must be replaced :(

I bought this drive HARD 1.5 weeks.
At first (on XP), it worked, but when I tried to save my all (750 GB), he stopped after 50GB with the message that the disc is full?
When I tried to connect it to another PC (Vista), the system told me that the disk is inaccessible because I need to get in shape first.
When I try to do that, it says "Failed in shape" and nothing happens?
I plugged my XP system again and the same thing happens?
    These problems are slowly making me crazy % #% $^ & %

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance for the help.

    Marc.

    It's strange...
What happens if you copy files on the HARD drive less? You get the same error message?

To be honest I can t say more for now, but I think that your HARD drive is defective. I mean you have tested on another PC and it's too much trouble.

You talked with the seller? Perhaps, it can be exchanged

  • Satellite A350-20 q - dead hard drive?

    Hello

I have a Toshiba Satellite A350-20 q. There always work very well and I use it as my main computer. A week ago I fell asleep without turning off, and when I awoke in the morning, the system had frozen. I tried to make it respond with ctrl alt del and try to sleep, but he had completely locked up and nothing worked so I thought that I had no choice but to hold the power button until it turned off. Once I had rebooted the machine upward it started to load ok but once he had got up in front of loading with the Green scroll bar and on the Welcome screen first bells were ringing and then the hard drive starts clicking and cry, almost like a mixture of a 56 k modem and the rattling noise makes your drive hard when windows starts everything first up on the desktop.

Now, what I'm trying to get it to load it does the same thing. I tried many things are:

    -Just leave it starts normally

-From each safemode parameter it gives

    -Startup Repair

    - And where you press f8 and choose repair your computer.

They all get about 5 seconds to load anything to do with windows and crashed. Clicks last about a minute and then stop and ive left in each of these situations for about 20 minutes to see if it will charge eventually but it just stuck in the same place.

But what I want to know is, is the dead hard drive or can it be repaired with a new installation of windows. I read somewhere that the hard drives make these noises when they suffer "boot failure"? I can talk complete nonsense here I don't really know much about how to work hard disks and what it takes to get fixed.

I have a desktop pc and another PC toshiba laptop Equium which can be used to help recover the disk hard if it's possible or even necessary. I don't mind forking out for the recovery disk if I'm sure that his will solve the problem without losing all my data. I asked a guy on a market that had a pc repair saddles but he just said ' dead hard drive I sell you a new "and I had yet to explain everything I just said that he made strange noises so im guessing that he was trying to me con.

If theres anything I left out or any other questions, I can answer which may help to sort then I'll do my best to answer. I really don't want to lose all my data and I can't really afford to buy a new hard drive with Christmas coming ive just had our 400 pounds on getting my car fixed the fork and MOTed are therefore a bit tight at the moment so if I can fix it without having to spend any money then that would be perfect.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post and I hope that someone out there knows a solution to my problem.

    Ross.

    Hi Ross

To be honest, I also think that HARD drive is defective.

As a first step, you should check if there is a way to access all of your important data.
You can get 2.5 SATA HDD box and put it inside the HDD of your Satellite A350. Connect it to your other satellite and you will see if you will be lucky and have full access to the HARD disk. If so, back up all your data.

After having done that, put the HARD drive in your A350 and try installing the OS using original recovery image. I hope that you created the recovery DVDs. If the original image is unable to be installed this will be the sign that the HARD drive may be... you know what I mean.
You can also try is put this drive in satellite (if SATA HDD can be used here) and try to install the satellite image.

    Test a little.

If nothing helps, you buy new HARD drive. Check eBay. You'll find used 300 GB HDD for 30 or 40 euros. Hey this is not big investment and I think you can spend so much money.

  • Satellite A100 - 551 (PSAA2E) - new HARD drive freeze computer

    Hello

Sorry for my bad English, I'm french.

I have a Satellite A100-551 and original 80 GB SATA HARD disk is dead. It works enough, but there are a lot of mistakes on its surface and the pc go very slow!
    So, I buy another drive.
    This one: [samsung 250 GB | http://www.rueducommerce.fr/Composants/showdetl.cfm?product_id=422226&option=1]

I have install on the pc but when I start the pc freeze.
At startup, there is a moment where a normal message saying that I can access the F2 BIOS with a progressbar for loading.

The freezing of progressbar and nothing else has add.
If I press F2 nothing adds.
    I can't do nothing.

Is it possible to get started with my new HARD drive?

Is there some hard drive not recommended?

    Thanks for your replies.

Strange, but perhaps the new HARD drive is defective or not compatible with your laptop.
Have you tested the new HARD drive in a laptop or in an external HARD drive enclosure? It work?

You can go into the BIOS without HARD drive?
    Check it!

In your case I would use check the HARD drive in another laptop first, and then maybe you should try another of your laptop HARD drive.

    Good luck!

  • Satelittle M55-S3293 - hard drive failure?

This laptop is old, almost four years, so is no longer under warranty.

My question is; It would be cheaper to replace the hard drive of this laptop, or should I consider getting a new computer laptop all together?
What would be more worth it?
It is even possible to replace such an old laptop hard drive.

Working on a pretty tight budget, so if someone could recommend a cheap Toshiba, would be great :)

    Please and thank you.

If only the HARD drive is defective, then it would be interesting to replace it.
2.5 HDD IDE are not expensive that of course, the question of size of HARD drive but 100 GB or 120 GB HARD drive is cheap and much cheaper as a laptop second hand.

HARD drive Bay must be placed at the bottom of the unit.
You must remove the two screws in order to get access to the HARD drive.
