  Yes, you will need to make a backup of all your personal files to some form of external media (external hard drive, DVD, etc.).  As a general rule, HP will send you the new hard drive - it will be completely empty, then you will need to reinstall the operating system on the new drive using your recovery disks, then load back your personal files from your external backup source.  If you have not created your set of recovery disks, you will need to order a set of replacement of these at the same time.

  Did a clean install of Vista.  My computer is running horribly, I got an error message and I have been informed that the only solution was through a "clean install".

  I made a second new installation of Vista. Computer keeps freezing.  Windows Media player is a mess, can not record a show without him having multiple corrupt file error shutdowns.
