  Meanwhile check for malware on the PC which may be trying to stop the MSE by download, installation, update (by right clicking on its icon and 'run as administrator' then go to the update tab) and scan with malwarebytesfree.

  I don't know where to post this option for assistance. A couple of weeks, I started to have problems with Microsoft Security Essentials. The program said that it could not turn on real-time protection. This operation returned because the time limit has expired. I followed the instructions to restart by typing services.msc, then click start to start the service by choosing Microsoft Antimalware Service, properties, choose automatic or stop, and then start. When I am able, it isn't long before that I'm right back where I started, could not start windows normally.

Security Essentials could not complete the virus and spyware definitions update 08/27/2012, 14:04 because of a network connectivity or Internet problem. "I also tried to download the definitions manually in a file and installed, but there is no clear Security Essentials of the error. Windows Update will not work for updating the definitions either. I tried to disable the user account control, but that did not help. When I go into the settings and try to create a new full backup I get the message "backup of microsoft windows has stopped working".
