In the end, it prompted me to reboot. I not a not restart, just tried right click of touchpad and lo & behold, it works.

  This isn't really a solution, because now reinstall the driver whenever the right click mysteriously disappears is more than a temporary workaround solution, not a solution, but I will accept it for the moment.

  Note: I didn't have to uninstall the existing driver at all.
