  Then, uninstall the software and clean the registry with CCleaner.

  Turn on or off the Genius

It's a tactic that I didn't think to try... again.  Just before, I had a discussion with an expert/technician(at www.supportservices.microsoft.com/support/expert/Waldo).. .He took a while, but he eventually removed the spyware that was causing me grief (TDSSKiller, Norton I think) and he did a few other things... then I tested a variety of accounts several times successfully, the virus disappeared.  But, thank you for your suggestion and keep that account as a possible solution for similar incidents in the future.  Yes, there is a FUTURE...!

  So I assumed that there was not a more recent version, because when I clicked on search for the updates says that it is up-to-date. I uninstalled Skype, restarted my computer, then tried to install a version that I had downloaded.
