My pdf files want to open with microsoft word instead of adobe reader, how to cancel instructions to the word and apply adobe instead?

Somewhere along the line while trying to open a PDF, Microsoft Word has been selected. Now, whenever I try to open a pdf file it takes me to Microsoft Word where, of course, it will not open. How can I cancel the directive to Microsoft Word and apply Adobe Reader instead?

  • Why all my programs and files open with Microsoft word?

All my programs and files open with Microsoft Word and I need to know how to change that?

I've seen that happen before when opening a program via a shortcut (for example. LNK file), you are asked what type of program to open it with. After Word selection using the Select a program from a list of programs installedand check always use the selected program to open this type of file, the Word document referenced by the shortcut of origin opens in Word, as it should.

The problem is that now all shortcuts (for example. LNK files) on the desktop or in the browser will want to be opened by Word. This is known as a file association. . The same condition can occur if you have performed these actions on one. JPG or even a. EXE, but the. LNK explanation is much more likely.

This has happened enough that a small utility was written to cancel the. LNK file association was created. There is a registry hack to do this, but I recommend the utility unLNK for its ease of use.

I used to send people on another site to download this utility, but this site has become confused with all the ads and fake download links. I put a copy on by SkyDrive own here.

Just download, then use the utility to unassociate the. LNK files for the user or globally delete the file type and let windows rebuild a new default.

  • The file does not open in Microsoft Word

When I try to open an online text document, it will not open in Microsoft Word. How can I change this?

Go to start / Default programs / associate a file or Protocol with a program and do scroll up until you get in .txt.  It's probably on the notebook.  Click on change and change for Microsoft Word (you may need to search for winword.exe somewhere in Program Files) and save your work and exit.  In the future, .txt files will be opened with Microsoft Word.

If this happens with the .doc, .docx, .rtf, or other files that MS Word can open, and then do the same with these types of files that you did with .txt above.

    I hope this helps.

  • Impossible to get a PDF file to be opened with Acrobat in Safari

I can't Safari to open or download the PDF files in Acrobat.

If I go to a page that contains a pdf file, it opens in preview.

If I go on a page (such as my online banking sites) who download statements, it does nothing.  I just get a non-printable screen.

It works on other computers running Safari 5.1.2 and Mac OS 10.6.8.

A clue: for some reason, Adobe Acrobat (I have both) or the Adobe Reader plugin appears in/user/library/internet plugins.  In fact there is nothing in this record.  I have configured Acrobat preferences to display PDFs in the browser.

    Any help out there?

  • Cannot insert pages in a PDF file after having signed with a digital signature in adobe 9

Is there no workaround solution that allows me to insert additional pages in a SIGNED pdf file?

    Background:

Author of a form create a form that needs multiple signatures and attached pages and converted to PDF format for the signature. Person 1 sign and sends it to the person 2. Person 2 must include additional documents and insert pages before signing.

In the new version, I noticed that it changes the security documents that may prevent the insertion after logging it. How can I disable this?

    Hi Bob,

You don't like the answer, but it cannot be disabled. In previous versions, when you added a page it invalidates the signature. Starting with Acrobat 9, once the PDF file is signed is no longer changes the content of the core PDF. The change was made to protect the integrity of the signature. You can still add comments, but (without being too geeky) comments are not part of the core PDF as pages are, they live in a separate level. In addition, you can always add data form, but as the comments, what you type into a form is no field not part of the core PDF.

The main thing is, we made the change to protect the integrity of the signture, and signature protects the integrity of the document. Thus, changes made to the document are no longer allowed in signed files.

    Hi tenleyvan,

Could you please if you want to XI default Acrobat open pdf documents?

Or do you want to open pdf in Microsoft Edge?

Do XI Acrobat default to open the PDF, right-click on any pdf file > click Open with > choose another application > select Adobe Acrobat in the list > check "Always use this app to open .pdf files" > OK

It goes the same for Microsoft Edge, select Microsoft Edge in the list instead of Adobe Acrobat.

  • Put links to video files in web pages - want option 'Open with' when the viewer clicks on the links.

If I go to a video file that is stored in my computer, for example xyz.mp4 and right click on it, one of the options is 'Open with' and several options for example QuickTime player, RealPlayer are presented for me to choose. But when I add the file to a web page and create a link to it for example http://sillyvideos.com/xyz.mp4 and then I right click on this link (on the web page) in my Firefox browser, I don't get the option 'open with '. My question is: is it possible to put a link to a video in a web page, so I or other viewers can click right on it and benefit from the option 'open with' (so we can choose the drive to open it, without having to download first in our computers)?

Normally what happens, is that the server sends the content with one or more headers that dictate what Firefox did with the video.

For example, if the content is sent with a header that Firefox can play internally, then Firefox can open the video in a tab and use a built-in player. You can see with MP3s when the server says that it is "audio/mpeg" content. However, if the server sends a content type that a capable of handling plugin, Firefox can attempt this plugin.

Normally Firefox will assume that the content is meant to be displayed in the browser, unless it is an unknown type or has a content-disposition header set to "attachment". In these cases, Firefox usually has open/save/Cancel dialog box.

I don't know what kinds of choices you want to offer visitors to your site, but if you thought giving them a choice of the players external , sending to content-disposition: attachment to make appear the probably the most logical open/save/Cancel dialog box. With smaller files such as JPEG and PDF, I did it with a script on the server side (for example, a PHP script). I don't know if the script would work with multimedia files.

If you want to provide more choices, you might need the buttons or links in the page.

This example applies to a PDF file, but the same idea applies to the image files and it can work with files more mainstream media. (In this case, you change the script to specify the correct content type.)

Implementation of the PHP approach, you follow these steps. This assumes that your server supports PHP (most do so) and that your Web host allows you to download PHP files.

    (1) save the following as getpdf.php file

    http://www.jeffersonscher.com/RES/getpdf.php.txt

    (2) using a FTP software or your server download function, copy getpdf.php into the same folder as your PDF file

    (3) test with your link. In the address bar, or in an e-mail, insert the following text before the name of the PDF file:

    getpdf.php?f=

Thus, for example, this direct link to the PDF:

    http://www.jeffersonscher.com/RES/Mixed_Content_Blocking.PDF

would become this link to the PHP file:

    http://www.jeffersonscher.com/RES/getpdf.php? f =Mixed_Content_Blocking.pdf

  • When I go to open a file a box comes up to choose what program I want to open with.

When I go to open a file a box comes up to choose what program I want to open with.  At the bottom of this box is a place where I'm supposed to be able to check who always says "use this program to open this file" I can't check this box.  I open office.org and it allows to automatically save in this format.  Microsoft word program has been installed on my computer and he began to do what I said above then my daughter-in-law.  I've since removed the Microsoft Word program, but it continues to make me choose program to open whenever I try to open a document that was created after she comes to settle the Microsoft word porgram.  Now, even if I had clicked on save in openoffice.org, with that I always get this box asking me what program I want to open.  Thank you for your help.  Marilyn.

I guess the box to "always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is grayed out, and that's why you can not check it out.  Is this correct?  Is this true for the two files that were created in OpenOffice files AND that were created in Microsoft Word (note that created is the same that that edited not)?

In OpenOffice, make sure that the "automatic file name extension" option is enabled in the file "Save as" dialog box.

    • Click on "My Documents" (or open Windows Explorer and go everywhere where your documents).
    • Click Tools > Folder Options and then click the view tab
    • Scroll down to the bottom of the "Advanced settings" area and make sure that "Hide extensions of known file types" is NOT checked.
    • Click OK

Find one or more files that is causing problems.  Which file extensions are displayed (3 characters after the dot in the filename) on these files?
