my system won't let me do a restore

As the forums MS Answers does not prompt for any information system when a new question is asked, we know absolutely nothing about your system.

Not knowing the basic information a problem prolongs the frustration and the agony of these issues.

What is your system brand and model?

What is your Version of XP and the Service Pack?
Describe your current antivirus and software anti malware situation: McAfee, Norton, Spybot, AVG, Avira!, Defender, ZoneAlarm, PC Tools, MSE, Comodo, etc..
What is the issue that you are experiencing that you think that the system restore will be remedied (or you are just convenient)?  System Restore is not a time machine.

Describe exactly what happens when you try to perform a system restore and the error messages you see which indicates that it does not work.

Some tools Anti Virus 'protect' your system so that they will not allow a restore of the system work properly.
For example, if you use Norton/Symantec products, you will see a message like this:
Restoration incomplete. Your computer cannot be restored...
It is also a popular Symantec problem (well, I'll be polite and call an "undocumented feature"...), they wrote an article about it:
According to what you use for malware protection, you may need to disable the product temporarily, do the system restore and then turn the products light up again when the system restore is complete.
Sometimes you need start your system in Mode safe and so that your protection programs are not running, and then do the system restore.  Tips from Microsoft in some of their articles that if the system restore does not restore your computer, start in Safe Mode, and then run the system restore.  It works for some configurations.
System Restore is sometimes so afflicted or Restore Points are suspicious, the best solution is to reinstall your system restore.  This will remove the old Restore Points, but sometimes it's the only way to fix a broken system restore.  You don't have to reinstall XP, only the part of system restore.
That can leave you with your problem of unspecified origin that you hope the system restore will fix (using a system restore is usually not equivalent to fixing the problem though).
Give these ideas some consideration if they apply to you.
Sometimes malicious will afflict your system restore to prevent you to find and remove malware.  It would much rather you trick into thinking that you need to repair or reinstall your XP when it is not necessary.
No matter what you use for protection against malware, I do so and then only begin to solve any problems:
Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware detection programs can solve any problems:
Malwarebytes (MMFA): http://malwarebytes.org/
SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/
It can be uninstalled later if you wish.
The scans by operating clean, reboot, test and we can fix any other issues.

  • System won't let me save files where I want. It says Contact admiistrator. There is none. It's just me. How can I say this stupid OS I AM the administrator, so I can save things where I want to save them to?

I want to be the administrator

You forgot to tell us where you try to save files. You may be trying to save them in directories protected like the root of %systemdrive%\lopr.txt, Program Files or Windows. After you protect the directories is common with many modern exploitation, not only Windows Vista and Windows 7 systems. It's a good thing if you think that whether or not.

What is not not the administrator, even if you are running in an administrator account (no best practices - see below), you still need to raise the privilege when overall changes to the operating system.

If you try to save files in your user directory and failing, please let us know. Otherwise the OS works as expected. If you find it too shocking, then you can always switch to another operating system. However, be aware that you will find the same 'limitations' in Linux and OS X. And nobody knows what he/she does would run as root under Linux.

You don't have your system set up optimal about users. You absolutely don't want to have only one user account. As XP and all the other modern operating systems, Vista and Windows 7 are OS multi-user with system built-in accounts such as administrator, by default, all users and guest. These accounts should be left alone because they are part of the structure of the operating system.

In particular, you do not want account only one user with administrator privileges on Vista and Windows 7 because the administrator account integrated (normally only used in emergencies) is disabled by default. If you use as an administrator for your daily work, and this account is corrupt, things will be difficult. It is not impossible to activate the built-in administrator to rescue things, but it will take third-party tools and work outside the operating system.

The user account that is for your daily work must be a Standard user, with the extra administrative user (call it something like 'CompAdmin' or 'Tech' or similar) only it for elevation purposes. As a user Standard is recommended for security reasons and will help protect your computer against infections. After you have created "CompAdmin", connect to it and change your normal user account Standard. Then log on to your regular account.

If you want to go directly to the desktop and ignore the Welcome screen with the icons of the user accounts, you can do this:

Start Orb > Search box > type: netplwiz [Enter]
Click continue (or provide an administrator password) when you are prompted by UAC

Uncheck "users must enter a user name and password to use this computer". Select a user account to connect automatically by clicking on the account you want to highlight and press OK. Enter the password for this user account (when it exists) when you are prompted. Leave blank if there is no password (null).

  • My system won't let me upgrade to Windows 8. «It is the policy of the company to stay on Windows 7»

He said that if I want to install Win 8, it only will allow him if I run virtually on a Win 7 machine. I don't understand why a Win 8 machine should cause any problems for the sys admin. He said something in the sense of "we don't know if our update packages will work". But I don't have anything other than a vanilla Windows installation. I have install all the software I need for myself (Office, Visual Studio, etc.).

original title: window repair virus won't let me not even run in safe mode system restore.  What should I do now?

Research on the web.  Not far from the computer.  Computer is speaking.  Windows repair itself downloaded to my computer XP Prof  Apparently erased all programs, all about office except explore and recycle bin.  Computer restarted in safe mode to do a system restore to an earlier date to wipe clear out of the memory of the computer.  Has started the system restore, you click on a date, click, hourglass and then nothing.  No message, nothing.  Click Next again and still nothing.  Download Security Essentials.  Took several attempts so that it can be updated.  Computer turns off.  EU Security Essentials uninstall and reinstall.  Finally updated.  I hope this works!

Hi, John. I had to deal with this virus of the Windows repair. I have had pretty good luck (fingers crossed anyway) by using the removal guide posted on bleepingcomputer.com.

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-Windows-repair

They have a program called rkill download that stops all the running processes. Allows you to prevent the virus from Windows repair. It will give you a file log and show you things that stop you. Write those down.

I had the same problem you had with not be able to update Malwarebytes. I would like to run rkill, run Malwarebytes, and then reboot and repair Windows would jump to the top. On the third try, I didn't restart after running rkill and Malwarebytes. Instead, I searched for the files that rkill to stop (and I wrote down) and remove them manually from the C drive. Also, I have downloaded and run CCleaner which has removed registry now dead keys associated with the repair of Windows virus in the registry.

    CCleaner: http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

Then I rebooted. That seemed to do the trick: I was able to update Malwarebytes again. I ran the program display offers the site computer network, and which unhid all files that was hiding the Windows repair virus.

Again seems to work... thought it might be of help to you as well! Good luck!

  • Did a system restore... and now it won't let me connect?

I did a system restore because some programs running properly, running extremely slow, and he said that my CPU usage was 100%. Theere was that a program works do not, so I restored my computer to the last date, I knew that it worked properly, (10/7-only half the program worked), she let me open a session and was much faster, but none of the programs were working now. So I restored as of today, and he let me not open a session. But worked in the same way as it did before the system restore. So, since then, the program worked correctly 10/06 all day, I decided to restore it to the 10/6 No 7/10 as before. Now it won't let me even open a session. When I click on my user name and put my password, it says ' system will not connect PC20 is not available. I tried F8 safe mode, safe mode with network, last known good configuration,... etc. Nothing works. Not even as an administrator. What can I do?

How can I restore my system XP to factory settings with on a boot disk? System Restore won't let me back to a date. I need to clean and start over with on a XP boot disk.

You will need to go on the manufacturer of your pc and then ask for a windows xp disk and drivers. This will give you a new copy, but not out of the box state. For an out of the box, get a recovery disk. Just answer what you want.

  • How do "Norton" to protect my laptop when a system error (thiers) won't let me activate or register?

I have a subscription for internet security with Norton, but I can't seem to run on my HP Pavilion laptop. In my view, that he may have been a conflict with an earlier version, that I got when the laptop was new. Whenever I try publishing everything to him, he won't let me. I received emails with new passwords to connect to help, but when I try Norton says I need to activate the account, and each time he ends by activation failed. I'm frustrated, and my laptop runs worse whenever I use it. I'd appreciate it if someone could push me in the right direction.     p.s. When I communicate with them, they are quick to try to help. Its always a new password or code in my email but they keep telling me that I need to activate the product.

You might have "leftovers" from the previous version that spoil things.
Try this Norton Removal Tool and uninstall all components of Norton.

  • Tor Browser won't let me set master password

Tor Browser won't let me set master password

Thank you FredMcD for your time and effort. I spent all morning going through the number of entries in the link you provided. Unfortunately, none of them could solve the problem--directly.

    However...

I learned so much about all the obscure and esoteric settings available and how to handle that I was able to synthesize a solution intuitively:

    • First of all, I carefully removed all traces of Tor with an advanced uninstaller.
    • After reinstalling, the browser made his usual routine of Premiere and opened.
    • An information bar first time upward offered access to privacy and security.
    • I AGREED and unchecked the first box (disabling Private Browsing).
    • The program itself given running and I was able to set my master password.

Private browsing, but also permanent Private Browsing, can be manipulated, turn it back on, then back to the convenience of the user, according to the needs of any particular situation. Note, however, that, under any form of PB, storage and use of password is removed.

Note that I did all the steps above (and many other things) throughout my diagnosis, but only AFTER I had already started using the browser (by playing and by checking the various options), which I think automatically some of my preferences of profile defined until I could do it manually. Alternatively, it could be a bad installation in the first place (questionable), or a combination of these factors. Whatever it is, it worked.

Regarding support in Mozilla, I am impressed by the volume and diversity of the information contained here, as well as the good Samaritans like you caring nature. However, almost all the documents that I have met is Firefox/Thunderbird-centric.

A search for Tor showed very little data and nothing similar to my case. By its very nature, a software like Tor would naturally by default an option like private browsing. But how many people know that it kills so the ability to use passwords? Even if the Tor Project is based on the Mozilla engine, I think that the people who run the project should be implemented their own support system or lend a hand here and may not return the ball to well-intentioned donors like you and your employees.

But in any case - problem solved, thanks to you and those who, as lend you time and advice to a complete stranger.

Now all I have to do is to find extra time to monitor these pages so that maybe, someday, I can return the favor.

I guess that your keyboard is faulty. That would explain the problem. Only for test purposes, connect an external USB keyboard and check how it works.
If everything works correctly, the keyboard controller is OK and it is certainly a problem of internal keyboard.
In this case only the replacement keyboard help.
