My task manager does not work

I have not been able to get my task manager to work for weeks.  I ran all virus scan, malware bites, ccleaner reg scan and scan Norton 360 and I have not been able very well the problem, I still ran HJT and have not been able to find or figure out what to do.

The KB555480 is correct (it might work sometimes perhaps) If you have XP Pro and if you do make a mistake, change the registry and if that is your only problem, but it is unlikely in the case of a malware infection.  He also doesn't correct the symptom of the problem and does not really solve the actual problem.

You get an error message on the Task Manager is disabled, or you see just a brief flash of the hourglass?

If no error message and Yes don't brief hourglass, do this first part:

Sounds like malicious software prepares and he doesn't want you can use the Task Manager to find and remove it.  He knows what you are going to use and do not run these tools.  He wants you to reinstall your XP instead.

You can fool the malware (and then fix it).

Using Explorer, go to the c:\windows\system32 folder and locate taskmgr.exe.

Copy the taskmgr.exe file and rename the copy something malicious software will not recognize.  I like to call the copy:

c:\windows\system32\jose.exe

Double-click on jose.exe and see if the Windows Task Manager window opens.

If the Task Manager opens, the problem is the malware won't let the taskmgr.exe a running process, but he does not know jose.exe as a process (it could well one day that), then you just have to outsmart it.

Usually, there are a few other things that also don't work you would like to know later, so I recommend you do this:

Reduce the risk of malware by running some scans.

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware detection programs can solve any problems:

Malwarebytes (MMFA): http://malwarebytes.org/

SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/

It can be uninstalled later if you wish.

The scans by operating clean, reboot, test and we can fix any other issues.

If you receive a message that the task manager has been disabled, you need to fix it with the following:

If your task manager is afflicted in this way, there are probably many other things which do not too much that you don't know yet - as the registry, the system restore and the command prompt Editor, so fix them all at once even if you have not discovered they are broken again.

Unless you have disabled these tools on purpose, chances are good that your system has a malware infection.  The malware knows what tools you use to try to find and delete, so that the malware disables you are more likely to consume and prevents them from running.

All malicious software tools you currently use or have used failed to protect your system.

The malware will be happy to fool into thinking you have to so something drastic to fix your system - how to use a System Restore Point, perform a repair, or even to reinstall XP from scratch.  This is what it would be like you, but these measures are not necessary.

You must solve the immediate problem of the tools does not, then scan your system for malware when you are finished.

No matter what kind of malware you've used analytical tools, they are unlikely to solve this problem because they cannot tell if the changes made to your system were on the end (you or an administrator has made them) or some malware, if analysis tools let these things alone (it's usually a good thing).  If your system contains afflictions like these, your malicious software tools have already failed to protect your system anyway.

The Manager of difficult tasks, Command Prompt, the registry editor and the restoration of the system at a time (if they need fixing or not).  The process is the same for XP Home and XP Pro.

These commands from registry removes the registry entries that are stop opening programs.  Although the registry entries do not exist, these commands are safe to run.

Before making any changes to your registry, back up the registry with this free and popular tool:

http://www.SnapFiles.com/get/ERUNT.html

Open Notepad to create a new text file:

Click Start, run and enter in the box:

notebook

Copy and paste the following lines in bold text in the new Notepad file.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"DisableTaskMgr" = -.
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"DisableRegistryTools" = -.
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System]
"DisableCMD" = -.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesSystem\\\]
"DisableTaskMgr" = -.
[HKEY_USERS\.default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"DisableTaskMgr" = -.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"DisableCAD" = DWORD: 00000000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore]
"DisableConfig" = -.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore]
"DisableSR" = -.

Save the new text file with the extension .reg on your desktop with a name, you can remember, something like:

enableit.reg

After you save the file, close Notepad.

Locate the file enableit.reg on your desktop and double-click it.

Alternatively, you can right-click on the enableit.reg file, choose open with... and select the registry editor.

Answer Yes to the following question: are you sure you want to add the information in the registry?

If you see a message that the registry editor has also been disabled, we will need to enable it first (differently).

You should then see a message that information has been registered in the register.

Depending on the circumstances, your tools can work right away, but in order to avoid the 'does rebooting your system?' question later, go ahead and reboot your system and test it.

Allow the tools in this way only solves the symptom of malware infection, but does not solve the real problem (the infection) so you're not quite done yet - your system might still be infected.

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware detection programs can solve any problems.

Malwarebytes (MMFA): http://malwarebytes.org/

SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/

They can be uninstalled later if you wish.

    Hi Anthony,.

    Thanks for posting your question on the Microsoft Community forum.

    We understand that you aren't able to open the taskbar. We appreciate the steps of troubleshooting that you tried it on the computer. We would be happy to help you. This could cause because of system files corrupted on your computer.

    1. Since when are you facing this problem?
    2. don't you make changes to the computer?

    Try the following methods:

    Method 1:

    -Press on the Windows key + R

    -Type taskmgr

    Check if you are able to access Task Manager

    Method 2:

    -Press Ctrl + SHIFT + ESC key

    Check if you are able to access Task Manager

    Method 3:

    Run the Microsoft safety scanner.

    The Microsoft Security Scanner is a downloadable security tool for free which allows analysis at the application and helps remove viruses, spyware and other malware. It works with your current antivirus software.
    http://www.Microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

    Note: The data files that are infected must be cleaned only by removing the file completely, which means that there is a risk of data loss.

    Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files

    Refer (to repair manually corrupted files, see the details of the File Checker process system to find the corrupted file and then manually replace the corrupted file with a known good copy of the file)

  • The Task Manager does not start. I get a message "task manager has been disabled by your administrator".

    Original title: I deleted a virus from my computer but the Task Manager does not start.  I get a message "task manager has been disabled by your administrator".  Can someone tell me how to fix this.

    Task Manager

    Too bad!  I thought about it.  It has been disabled in the registry.

  • the Task Manager does not start

    My laptop started running very slowly and I can't seem to start the Task Manager. Ctrl alt delete gives me the opportunity to start that I chose, but I don't get an inactive icon in my toolbar. I am running vista Home basic with service pack 1. When I restart or stop the laptop hangs at logging off-page. I also noticed that some of my applications/startup process are not start or appearing in my toolbar. I initially had Bit defender as my anti virus - but he exchanged for computer related. I had the problem with both.

    Hi Omanianne,

    Please read the following article from Microsoft Help on the Troubleshooting Task Manager.  Specifically, look at the sections of the Task Manager does not start, and How to enable the Task Manager if it has been disabled.  Based on the other symptoms you have described, it is very possible that you have some kind of virus.  Please make sure that your antivirus software is up to date and run a scan complete your system.  Please let us know if you have any problems or questions.  Thank you.
