  After days and days of the trial, an online chat with a technician Microsoft (which was useless) I finally found a suggestion that worked... I had to create a new user account with administrative privileges. Media worked perfectly in this new account! I then spent ages downloading the files from my old account before deleting completely.   I uninstalled the multimedia functions (under the contrl Panel > prgrams and features) and reinstalled - no fixed not

  In any case - gave up on it and completely reinstalled from scratch this weekend and its working fine again. I just hope that the problem does not happen.
