Hello
References for Vista also works on Windows 7.
Updates page is closely related to IE - look for something blocking.
What antivirus/antispyware/security products do you have on the machine? Be one you ALREADY had on this
machine, including those you have uninstalled (they leave leftovers behind which can cause strange problems).
IE - Tools - Internet Options - Advanced - tab click on restore, and then click Reset - apply / OK
IE - Tools - Internet Options - Security tab - click on reset all default areas - apply / OK
Close and restart IE
IE - tools - manage Addons (for sure disable SSV2 if it is there, it is no longer necessary but Java always install
"(and it causes problems - you never update Java to go back in and turn it off again)." Search for other possible problems.
Windows Defender - tools - software explore - look for problems with programs that do not look right. Permit
are usually OK and "unauthorized" are not always bad. If in doubt about a program to ask about it here.
Could be that a BHO - BHOremover - free - standalone program, needs no installation, download and run - not all
are bad, but some can cause your question (toolbars are BHO).

Check Windows Update has disappeared
I disabled the box in Windows Update settingsso as to not give me updates for Microsoft products and not to check the new optional Microsoft software when I update Windows.
After that, the box has disappeared in the settings window, and I can't go back on my decision. I read somewhere that it could be corrected using the policy editor. I attemppted to do, but it did not work satisfactorily.
Is there an effective way to restore this box which has disappeared from the settings window?
[Running Windwos 7 Pro 64-bit]
I found that I could try to clear the history in Windows Update as follows:
Paste this command to search for Windows.
%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Go to the datastore folder, and delete the content. Reboot and re-scan updated them.
I did the above, after following the instructions of MowGreen wuauserv and bits.
After restarting the PC, the Windows Update page includes all the options and now shows the box who had disappeared.
The only thing I lost was the history of Windows Update.

Windows Update has fried my PC, help!
So, I woke up yesterday and shot to the top of my HP Touchsmart 610, running Windows 7. I have had this PC for more than 4 years, never had a problem. He began to install updates to windows, and then when he got to my login screen, he began to blink very rapidly. The slider is 'thinking', and it never gives me the opportunity to enter my credentials. When I restart, I try to start in safe mode, same thing, screen just flashes faster. I called technical support Windows and after about 30
minutes, he said, the only option I have is to do a reset on my system, but I can lose all my files. This isn't cool Microsoft! He also said that they are aware of the issues. I tried every fix I could find on the net, nothing works. By pressing F1 - F12, nothing all that, nothing works. Technology also said that I can bring my PC to someone back up before you reset, how can happen if I can't start the computer? Someone please help, I have work to do and very important to save files!
Here's another method:
- Set your BIOS so that it uses the DVD drive as its primary boot device.
- Start the computer with your system repair CD. If you do not have one, ask a friend to burn you through the control panel / backup and restore. It takes less than five minutes.
- Press a key when prompted to boot from the CD.
- Select 'PC Repair' in the menu.
- Select 'Repair' when prompted.
- When you are prompted, select System Restore.
- Configure Windows to a point before the botched automatic update.
