N40l

Hi all, thanks in advance for any help

I have a server Proliant mico N40L, his works very well for about a year, but the habit now properly initialize or get seen by the wireless router.

I first thought that the ethernet jack was dying, then bought a new card for this, still no luck

It ir running unraid (linux) and is used as a media player and a laptop backup.

It has 8 GB of ram, a 16 GB usb key and a red 2 TB hard drive.

both the USB and hard drive are ok and I can see the data on both.

not sure abou the ram

There is a chance that the server has been affected by lightning, the other week, but I do not know how to test anything on the motherboard.

It of easier to just get a replacement motherboard, or can a motherboard of the new proliant, the N54L simply fit into my home instead

see you soon

brand

resolved, I think that

Well, he works again in any case.

pulls everything apart and put it all back again once, realized that the new ethernet card was not installed correctly, dixed that and everything seems to work again

assume that the integrated ethernet card died somehow

is there any point of any verification more?

    Team,

I have a micro N40L server that I use a home theater media server. It has been sitting in my living room for a few years, quite happy.

This week, possibly after a power failure, the server couldn't start. I noticed he was sitting there with the power button showing amber in color and the HP logo on the front panel was not lit.

I tried to hold down the power button but the yellow light remained on and the server did nothing.

If I removed the power cable there is a click as I plug it back, the light orange light. The only light is the light of network activity that flashes from time to time, as it was still plugged into the network.

No fans run, no disc no boot, no output to the screen through the graphics card Radeon HDMI. Even the bios page will appear.

I am assuming that the power supply may have failed. Can what tests I do to find the flaw?

Would it be a defective switch?

The operating system running a Windows Server 2008.

He had two drives, 250 GB system drive and a single drive of 500 GB data. No RAID has been configured.

The only addition is a Radeon graphics card.

    Any ideas what to try?

    Thank you

    AJ

You are right, the problem was caused by the power switch blocked.

After some insistence, it is still blocked, but with the help of the post.

Improvement of Hugh until I can get it replaced.

    Thanks for your help...

  • Installation of Windows Home Server 2010 on Proliant N40L

Does anyone know if Windows Home Server 2010 will install on a Proliant N40L without having to install additional device (for configuring SATA RAID) drivers.

I can't install again, that my DVD drive is IDE not SATA, I'm waiting for a new. Once this drive shows up, I'll be able to find out for me.

Well, the answer was that the installation went very well. I didn't do anything to Windows Server 2011 to recognize the RAID adapter.

  • Find the optical drive data cable (Proliant N40L)

Proliant N40L is provided with a data cable to the DVD player that I need to install my system? As far as I know, mine is not.  I consulted the slot in DVD player and found the power wire, but no cable (IDE motherboard) data.

If I buy one, where is a good place to find a?

    Hello

Proliant N40L does not use the EIDE interface.

It uses the standard SATA. When you buy a SATA DVD to install, buy a SATA cable at the same time. They are inexpensive.

  • Installation of Windows Server 2011 on drives mirrored in N40L

    First POST:

Happy (and successful) New Year to you!

I just got my N40L Proliant, and I intend to mirror the boot drive before you start the installation of the OS. Will it take the RAID driver on "floppy" in order to install Windows Server 2011?

Literature talks about the creation of a floppy disk, but before that I have to create a floppy drive!

I'm working my way through the documentation, but it was not written for people with symptoms of dementia of old age... so I decided to ask here, in the hope that someone else has tried this recently and can give me a straightforward answer.

I think that just, I freaked out when I saw the word "floppy". Probably if I need to install RAID drivers during the operating system installation phase, then they would have to come from a USB key, as seems natural replacement of disks (I have a bunch of those covered in 20 years with a value of dust...)

    Hello:

And a very happy new year to you too!

  • Insuficient memory on HP N40L

I checked the specifications min for esxi 5 running on this server, and it says 2 GB. I don't want to increase the ram soon but the atm, he has only 2 GB in there. However, trying to install esxi, it stops and reports that it requires that at least 1.97 GB of ram and the maching have only 1.87 GB? Has anyone else had this incorrect scan of Ram to try to install it on a servers HP? Any solution please?

its probably of RAM allocated to video memory.

  • ESXi 5.5 only 4 TB usable for the data store

    Hi all

Although in vSphere Client 5,46 TB of capacity is visible, I can only use 3.64 TB to a data store.

    Configuration:

    -HP Proliant Microserver N40L

-HP Smart Array P410/512 MB BBWC, FW 3.66 Controller

    -4 x 2 TB as a Raid5

    HP-ESXi - 5.5.0 - iso - 5.72 A

I read a lot of articles on > limits of 2 TB of older versions of ESXi or controllers, limitation of 4 TB of c# vSphere Client, old firmware and esxi driver problems, etc.

But I could not understand the problem.

The P410 controller shows 5.5 TB:

Your output, it shows that there are two partitions vmfs

A partition with 1.8 to and another with 3.8 to.   That's the reason why you see only 3.8 to

I don't know why the 1.8 to vmfs volume is not list anywhere (which does not appear in the list of file system of storage of esxcli also). Do you have any before partition created manually. If you think that if there is no data in this 1.8 to vmfs partition you can remove it by using the partedutil command and then use this free space to extend the existing 3.8 to. But do not forget before you delete the partitiaon

  • ESXi host has no persistent storage / fsUUID is null

    Hello

The issue I'm having involves a HP N40L Microserver w / local storage on a HP SmartArray P410 controller.  6 hard drives configured in a RAID10 array and the multitude of ESXi what OS runs on local USB.

A recent issue w / the matrix raid caused a crash of the VMS resident and now "host ESXi has no persistent storage" message.

I solved the problems of disk HARD w / table (replaced a disk), and the table is presented in the peripheral topic under "HP Serial Attached SCSIDisk.  ID is naa.600508b1001c8d82bf5f4a33f0e2bc04

However, the data store does not appear in the tab of data warehouses.  I refreshed and restarted several times w / no success.

This data store was run on an installation 5.1 ESXi (ISO custom HP) for a few years without problem.

To try to solve the problem, I installed ESXi 6.0 U1 on a new USB stick which fortunately is now running in the Microserver but presenting the same behavior for the data store.

  • Laboratory at home - will this work?

I'm not familiar with ESXi capabilities or it is that I've never experimented with a bare metal hypervisor. I would like to know if what I have in mind will work before investing my time and money into this project

Objectives - build a ZFS NAS bases / syslog server under a card for my lab at home

    Material

N40L - Dual-core 1.3 GHz AMD Athlon Microserver HP 2 - NC107i PCI - e Gigabit NIC. I'll add one extra gigabit NIC as well.

I'll put the max 8GB DDR3 ECC RAM

For storage, I have to make a minor mod so I can get 5 x HD machine comes with 4 drive bays, so I'll put disks SATA 4 x 2 TB to use as storage RAID-Z. I want to add a shopping cart to drive for 5.25 inch optical drive to install an additional SSD used for these two VMS operating systems. Here is a link for someone who has done the mod - http://paulroberts69.wordpress.com/2012/01/22/installing-a-hdd-in-the-optical-drive-bay-on-an-hp-microserver-n40l/

    Configuration

In the end, I want to have 2 virtual machines running on this computer.

    VM1 - FreeNas 8

VM2 - FreeBSD or Linux used as mainly a syslog / web server

Questions and concerns. Will it be possible?

I want to start ESXi on internal USB port of motherboards.

I'll be able to install the operating system of these two virtual machines if I partition the SSD added that I installed in the optical drive Bay?

The FreeNas VM will be able to configure the RAID-Z among the 4 SATA physical disks?

Each virtual computer will be assigned it's own physical NIC because they will run on 2 separate behind my pfSense firewall network segments. I don't have any image it will really be a problem if I used it in network bridge.

If this is not possible, I'll probably install FreeBSD on its own and try to get my setup above to work. I'm not familiar with FreeBSD and I want the nice interface of the FreeNAS GUI to manage my storage and Samba shares, so that is why I want to virtualize.

Advice or advice is greatly appreciated.

I think I'll have to sacrifice the RAM. It looks like buy sticks of 2 x 4 GB RAM ECC would cost me about $450. The box already comes with a 2 GB module, so if I buy another 2 GB directly from HP module I can get it for $70. I doubt I need 8GB to my config anyway.

Try to search in Kingston or other compatible memory instead of HP original.

I was looking here (Europe, Switzerland) locally and them found for about $ 40. Kingston is the list this memory as KTH-PL313E / 4G

$600 tax Inc. for the Microserver.

    $400 for 2 x 3,5 "SATA 2 TB + 1 x 120 GB SSD (I have already 2 x 2 TB drives kicking around and I have a PCI-e Gigabit NIC to an old box)

$70 for 2 GB ECC memory module

So probably all said and done between $1000-$1100 taxes. I'm from good old (Ontario) Canada.
