NAS200: formatting a drive time...

Hi, NAS200 users. I am trying to format a Western Digital 1.5 TB (WD15EARS) and the console shows it is still formatted for almost two days! Across the street, lights always... So I have the following questions:-how much time will it take to get in shape (slow)? -If I close the pc console and maintaining format past, when I re - open the console pc format progress are affected? The progress of the percentage indicator then disappeared--a well formatted and written hdisk appeared once as a disk not formatted after start without reason possible, if I had to take off NAS200 and when I plugged into another pc, started with Knoppix Linux and he showed that it was 100% OK... Thanks for your time, Anastasios

The NAS200 is very low on RAM, that's why it takes a long time to format large capacity disks. My 1 TB drive took the better part of a day to get in shape. I would not be surprised if a 1.5 TB drive takes 2 days. It also depends on if you use not logged (ext2) or logged (XFS).

I'm sure that the format operation will not suffer if you close the web browser; After all, this isn't the browser that performs the formatting, it just keeps track of it. While you're not watching, the formatting will continue. When you reopen a connection to the web GUI later it will show you how much (or little) format has progressed.

If you wish, you can take the drive out of the NAS and format it on a Linux system that supports the file system you are using; as long as you make changes to the partition table, I think that the NAS200 will recognize the disk as formatted, and put in shape (or just running a fsck) on partitions should take only a few seconds on a PC.

You should see three partitions: the first is where the data are intended, the second is where it stores hidden configuration files and the third is the swap partition.

Good luck!

My time machine drive seems to be failing with many messages that the backup failed.  I was able to restart the backup process, but nothing works now.  I'm ready to make a new record.  I know I'll lose all my recent backups.

Where is good place to buy a new drive time machine?  1 TB would be perfect.

Use disk utility to format the drive as Mac OS extended (journaled) and use the GUID partition table. Then, go to system-> Time Machine Preferences to select the disc.

  • Installation of SP3 on a newly formatted HARD drive

    Hello

I have a few questions about the installation of Windows XP Service Packs on newly formatted hard drives.

Recently I have formatted a new HARD drive and installed Windows XP Home Edition. In order to be upgraded to Service Pack 1 to 3, it is recommended to connect to Windows Update and download and install it from there. I did this and was prompted to install Service Pack 2. During the last steps of the installation (I think that durng the procedure of 'start process'), I lost Internet connectivity and was impossible to reconnect (I use a USB dongle. I think that a virus infection is interfering with the connection). That's why I had to restart my computer for the installation could be completed, but it seemed to be successful that I was able to reboot without any problem. I assume that the installation had actually finished and it was just reset stage that was interrupted.

Question: even if the installation of Service Pack 2 has not finished and my machine seems to be fine, reinstall Service Pack 2 in order to ensure that it is completely installed?

Question: Why should I install SP2? If Service Pack 3 contains all fixes and features of all previous Service Packs and it is acceptable to upgrade to Service Pack 1 to 3 directly, why didn't Windows Update invite me to install Service Pack 3 instead?

Question: I have found a manual download of Service Pack 3 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=5b33b5a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4&displaylang=en), but Microsoft strongly recommends that use you it only on machines in a network, and not on a single computer. Y at - it hurt to do?

A question here, is that if Microsoft recommends that download the latest Service Packs of Windows Update online, so it seems not possible to fully guarantee your Windows installation before connecting the interest for the first time. All the while I'm software download and installation of Service Pack 2, malware, worms and viruses have been infecting my computer (Avast! blocked a malware exploit). So even if I managed to upgrade to Service Pack 3, my machine is already infected.

Is there a recommended way to upgrade to Service Pack 3 before you connect to the Internet for the first time?

    Thank you

    Tristan

  • Formatting hard drive

I have a question already asked variation. I'm trying to format my HDD, which has only a single drive-drive C. Back I get the same messages on disassembly and handles, etc., to which I say yes, but then a message says cannot format because a process always uses the C volume.  Does this mean that I have to keep the format running and dismantle until there is no more process using volume C, or is there a way I can disable all processes using volume C at a time?  Thank you

    Hi WilliamMeek,

    1. How do you access MS-DOS to format the drive?
    2. Do you have any OS installed on the drive?
    3. Which command you use to format the drive?

You will not be able to format the drive if you are currently connected to the operating system.

I suggest that use you the Windows XP installation CD and start in the recovery console to format the drive.

    Hi EdDell,

    1. did you of recent changes on the computer?

2 when was the last time it was working fine?

This would happen if the computer is infected by virus or malware infections.

I suggest that you scan and remove any malware or computer virus infections and check if it works.

The scan below only works on the 32-bit version of Windows

You can use the Microsoft security essentials to scan your computer

  • What is the best way to format a drive external microSDHC?

I read this formatting with windows XP may create too small a block size causing the disc to read very slowly. How read size XP disk blocks and what can I use to format the drive to the 32 k block size favorite?

    Thank you!

You can check the status of the Sansa Connect in MSC mode and use chkdsk to have a look at the drive.  Unlike the common task of repairing corrupted files, we won't need to use the /f switch this time.

In the results of the check disk, the cluster allocation size will be shown.

Don't forget the chkdsk command is a command line utility, accessible via a DOS command prompt or the Run dialog box.  Watch the Sansa using Windows Explorer to find the drive letter assigned to it.  The command will be baseed on the drive letter assigned to the Sansa through your PC.

Say, for example, the drive letter is E.  Our order would be chkdsk E:

The response of the utility will display "# bytes in each allocation unit.   It must be close to 32000.

You can format the windows (it does not erase your music, so have a backup), and then specify 32K.  If you don't see this option, no worries!  Unplug your rocket, then use the command internal format: settings > system settings > Format > Yes.

The Sansa will optimize the 32 KB cluster size.

  • If I format my drive and install linux, how do I install and activate my windows?

    * Original title: reinstalling Windows 7

    Hello

I bought a laptop recently, with a pre installed, activated windows 7. I'll be using linux for some time and goes back to Windows. If I format my drive and install linux, how do I install and activate my windows? And where can I get the source? In my laptop there is no serial number sticker. Its a laptop Lenovo b50-80.

Please do not suggest dual os.

Here's what I suggest strongly that do you before installing Linux, create a system image backup.

    http://www.notebooks.com/2009/10/24/how-to-backup-your-installation-of-Windows-7/

When you install Linux, then decide to go back to Windows 7 sometime in the future, you can just restore the image of the system.

  • PHANTON Drive; When I try to open the my computer Explorer window is white and I get a message that I need to format the drive F.

    Hello

I have a laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.  The HARD drive is configured to have a small partition for reserved system, Partition C for the system and the Partiton E for my files.  D drive is the DVD ROM Drive.

Very occasionally when I try to open the my computer Explorer window is white and I get a message that I need to format the drive F.  I did not have a permanent Drive F and when this happened had no other connected devices.

Drive F is often used, as are other drive letters, by various devices from time to time, such as external hard drives, Flash, my TomTom SatNav players, camera, readers of cards etc.

Can someone explain why this happens and if I can do something to stop what is happening in the future?

    Eric

Some Dell computers hard drives are extremely sensitive, if your computer is DELL' consider the technical service. Because if you run recovery, you have a headache.

  • Format hard drive for Media Center

I have a Dell E1705, which I used for several years.  During the system was under warranty, a Dell technician I crossed of reformatting the hard drive and had me format in a single partition.  I discovered once this is completed there is a hidden partition to enable the functionality of Media Center work.  I tried to make a 1.5 GB hidden partition, but could not make it work.  I'm tired of formatting and reinstalling and just went ahead and started using it.  Supervisor of the technician, I was working with at the time said to call him just at the time when I wanted to start.

My warranty has now lapsed.  I want to reformat the hard disk and to return the media center functionality.  I don't know how to format the drive hard so that the installation works properly.

I have the reinstallation of the operating system CD (DVD) "Version of Windows Media Center 2005 with Update Rollup."  I have a Cd labeled "to reinstall Dell Tools System Software", "Drivers and Utilities for.

reinstall Dell Inspiron and XPS system software","to reinstall Dell Media Experience 3.1 "and" to reinstall Dell MediaDirect on Dell Inspiron 9400 and E1705 systems".

I think I can get through the basics of starting from the DVD and reinstall Windows as well as to get pilots back in the drivers disk.   I would get the media central part back to feature so needs to know how to reformat/repartition my hard drive so that it works.  All the words of wisdom / tutorial on adding information necessary to solve my problem would be appreciated also.  I looked around, on the support.dell.com site and forum of users without finding something that helps me to solve this problem.

  • Unable to format hard drive for Windows

Hello, I need your help here! You receive the same error message saying: "Windows is unable to complete the format" when you try to format an external hard drive on your computer? Honestly, the hard drive of my dell computer recently asked just to get in shape when it has been used on my Windows 7 computer. However, when I click on Yes to format this drive with my lost player documents and files, windows says just windows could not complete for formatting? Honestly, I used Google to search for the error problems related unable to complete the format windows and also asks me to select a formatting program? What you recommend me? This software is useful for my case? Thanks for any suggestions here!

    Hello

If you have a mac, you can use a utility called disk pre-installed program. Connect your external DRIVE for mac drive and find an application called disk utility, in disk utility, there should be an option to erase the external HARD drive. It may come with an error similar to what you had before, but it's certainly worth a try. Let me know if this worked for you.

    Thank you

  • format hard drive for windows and larger files, TV supports

    Hello

pls suggest me with the solution to the following problem.

I need to know what format of hard drive works with mac, windows, & TV too, even for large files and quality bluray movies

FAT32 only supports files up to a maximum size of 4 GB, which would be certainly much too small for Blu - Ray quality media.

exFAT supports files of unlimited size effectively, Mac and Windows can read and write to exFAT to format external drives but neither can boot from such a unit. If a TV or other system supports exFAT drives, you need to check yourself formatted.

NTFS supports files of unlimited size indeed, Mac can only read NTFS, it cannot format or write to NTFS, unless you get an add-on. Of course Windows supports NTFS. Again, you will need to check if your TV etc supports NTFS. If you want to add full support for NTFS to a Mac, I recommend this - https://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/

HFS + is the current format of Apple and new supports files of unlimited size effectively. Mac can of course read, write and format disks. Does not support the Windows as a standard HFS +, but still, you can buy an add-on for Windows Add this feature. It is extremely unlikely that a TV would support HFS +. If you want to add full support for HFS + for Windows, take a look at this - http://www.mediafour.com/software/macdrive/

There are also other formats of disc for example ZFS and BTRFS, Ext3, Ext4 and soon SATF, but in this case, they are not relevant.

Note: as indicated above, in many cases, I said 'actually unlimited', it is of course a limit, but one so great that he will strike you not for individual files, including Blu - Ray or even files UltraHD (4 k).

  • Format HARD drive in my cam error practice sony XR150E. Please let me know how to solve

    Hi all

I use Sony handycam model XDR150E. I am not able to take any video, it always shows me HDD format error.

Please let me know how to solve

You can also use a data recovery software to help you.the disc you are trying to access either is not designed to be used with your OS, or it has been damaged and the data can no longer be read. Each diskette and hard disk must be formatted to prepare media for use with a particular file system.

to resolve the error format hard drive , use a third-party software or ask for the help of an engineer.
