Network reconfiguration/addition Vmotion and FT

Hey people,

I came in a VMware configuration that includes 3 guests (5.5 Enterprise license), with lit HA.  As I am trying to understand more advanced features, it seems that the network is not configured in the best conditions. It was determined at the start when I tried to learn a little more about FT, and the first message that I got was that it has not defined the FT network.  So I plunged in each host's network configuration and found the following:

VMware Network Layout-01.jpg

As this table shows, there is no defined network FT or vMotion.  Therefore, the question of the day would be, can I add in the each host (with its own IP address range) without impacting the production? My placement of these networks would be on vSwitch1.  Normally, I'd also have the management on the same network switch (where all port core services would be a vSwitch and VM on the other switch, but as I said, this has been inherited by me).

Thanks in advance for the help.

James

Here's my recommendation

This recommendation is if you just want to play with FT...

in a productive environment I would recommend ad two vmnic to split the traffic iscsi and vmotion/FT.

I'm a newbie to networking Yes, if separate IP space is a recommendation, which is the basis behind this reasoning?

I recommend you set up 3 different IP subnets. The subnet IP public/business for the network management and two separate for vMotion private IP subnets and FT. All three go in the VMkernel and from what I've read so far, put them on the same subnet may cause problems with routes traffic through the appropriate interfaces. In addition to this, it makes sense for safety, as amvmware already mentioned.

  • Random virtual machines after vMotion and Storage vMotion network loss

    Hi all -

I have a couple of tickets open with VMware and our supplier of SAN, EqualLogic, on this issue.  Since the configuration of our production and DMZ clusters we noticed that the virtual machines will sometimes drop network connectivity after a successful vMotion and Storage vMotion.  Sometimes, although much less frequently, virtual machines also spontaneously lose network overnight.  What happened only a few times.  The strange thing is that the other guests on the VM host are fine - they lose any network.  Actually, I can do no more than 3 computers virtual host to another, and 2 of 3 can switch correctly, so that we lose the network.  The work around?  Simply 'disconnect' from the virtual NETWORK card 'reconnect' and the virtual machine will start the return packets.  I can also switch the VM troubled return to the host State and it will find the network.  I can it reboot and re - win network.  I can re - install the virtual card completely, and she re - win network.

VMware has seen a lot of mistakes of SAN in our log files in order to update us our SAN firmware to the latest version.  That seems to have fixed that but we still have the issue.  Here are some of the specifications - all environments are virtually identical except for memory:

    Of PowerEdge R810

    NICs Broadcom 5709

    EqualLogic SAN running 5.0.5 F/W

We use frames.  ESXi is fully patched.  I haven't seen a boss or not, it is only some guest operating system that loses the network, but we are a Windows environment.

When a virtual machine loses the network, we can not:

    • Ping to it
    • Ping it
    • Ping him at the virtual machines on the same host or vSwitch
    • Ping outside our network
    • resolve DNS, etc..

I followed some KBs VMware without success, including:

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1003839
http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC & externalId = 1002811 (port security is not enabled)

-All the VMware tools have been updated to the latest version correct and corresponds to the ESXi host
-Connected to the service ESXi console, I cannot ping the VM problem by name of host or IP address, but I can ping do not affected by the issue of the OTHER virtual machines.  I can also pings the service console.
-Connected to the troubled virtual machine itself, I cannot ping other virtual machines, I can't resolve host names, I cannot ping by IP.  The machine virtual CAN ping itself by IP, but not hostname.  I cannot ping other virtual computers on the same virtual switch or network by either IP or host name.  I can't ping the vSwitch network management.
-All vSwitches are configured in the same way and the same.
-Notify the switches is set to yes
-There are a lot of available virtual ports
-We tried the E1000 and VMXNET virtual cards with no difference.
-All cards are configured to negotiate, but we tried to force individuals speeds as well as with no difference

I appreciate your help.  I have problems getting anywhere on this issue with the sellers.

Sometimes, it might be useful to really check that all uplinks VMNIC for all VLAN does work them. Try this is to create a new portgroup on the vSwitch used by your virtual machines on the host of the first, put a test VM on the portgroup, then go into the NIC teaming policy from the new portgroup and select "Override switch command failover."

Then down vmnic all except one in unused, then only a single VMNIC is active. Then set the portgroup VLAN to a production of VLAN and try to see if we could ping some expected from the different addresses. If it works, then move VMNIC work until unused and move up to another asset. Try again, and this for all the vmnic. If it works, then you have verified that the configuration of VLANS and other settings are correct on the physical switch in the face of this host ports.

If several VLANs, repeat the process for all other productions VLAN. Then repeat on the other hosts.

While that may take some time, occurs if everything is properly configured on the physical switches. When occurs a vMotion virtual machine gets a new "Port code" and is assigned to a new outgoing VMNIC. If there is an error of configuration on one or more physical ports that might seem random, but may still happen on VLAN x on y VMNIC. Given that Port ID policy you use indeed spread randomly VMs on the vmnic these problems may be difficult to diagnose. (Make a disconnection of the VM vNIC gives the virtual machine a new port-ID, which it will move to a new outgoing VMNIC, which might seem to solve the problem.)

I hope that people who have this problem in the future, you read this before you follow Ricky RockStars because he has mental health problems. After having seen his reply here and then others and it is how wildly incorrect, I did some research. Dell isn't the only place to take responses at random to see if a stick, said. Apparently, he did that on ' yah * answers "and others, also. It is not a true expert, and instead of saying that he doesn't know, he barks just the random directions to try to solve problems or problems which can still be fixed, as it did here. He loves the power of the people who listen to him. He really has no idea what she's doing. He just googles your problem and tells you what it finds, as if he knew. The problem with is that if you have already done this, he will find the same wrong information makes you or even worse information as he did here. I saw a lot of his answers and about half are correct, 1/3 are wrong and just wasting peoples time, and the other 1/6 are harmful. Look at what happened here. He should have just said what I say below, but instead of that he had a back and forth for days because he loves control.  Seriously, I don't understand how Dell allows this to happen. It is everywhere in their forums, which gives bad advice, and using people as the 'puppets' in his weird game to control the actions of others.

    Here's the real answer:

Dell Vostro 3550 does not support WiFi 5 Ghz network connections. There is nothing you can do to address this problem in addition to changing the hardware (go out and buy a 5 GHz USB adapter).

  • vMotion and vReplication on a crossover cable?

    Hello

I am trying to configure 2 ESXi6 hosts physically connected to each other using cables ADJUSTABLE. I want to put in place so that vMotion and vReplication traffic happen using the ADJUSTABLE cables. This is my setup:

    vCenter - 192.168.130.0

    vReplication - 192.168.130.5

    ESXi 1:

    NIC0 - vSwitch0 - vmk0 (192.168.120.50 - Mgmt traffic); default gateway - 192.168.120.5

    NIC1 - vSwitch1 - vmk1 (10.10.10.10 - vMotion, vReplication, Provisioning)

    ESXi 2:

    NIC0 - vSwitch0 - vmk0 (192.168.120.51 - Mgmt traffic); default gateway - 192.168.120.5

    NIC1 - vSwitch1 - vmk1 (10.10.10.11 - vMotion, vReplication, Provisioning)

ESXi1 and ESXi2 are connected using the crossover on NIC1 cable and I tested ping using SSH between the two ESXis and it works very well on the network 10.10.10.x. I tried to select one of the virtual machines offline, then selected vMotion and it fails to approximately 23% with an error "Could not connect to host". Just as an FYI - without cross-over cables and the NIC1 on the two hosts I tested successfully with vReplication, so I know of files can be copied using the 192.168.120.x network.

Can someone please help with this? Help, advice or comments are appreciated.

    Thank you

    Sau

OK figured it. It's the firewall ESXi. I had to activate the 10. range in the IPS allowed for NFC 902. Looks like it's using the cross on connection. Thank you for all your help.

  • Question about the collection of NETWORK adapters for vMotion / VM vSwitch

    Hello

We use vSphere Enterprise Edition 5.1.

We also create separate vSwitch for management / vMotion and VM.

Each vSwitch receives 2 network cards connected to the different switch for redundancy.

We would like to know is necessary to provide the collection of NETWORK adapters for these vSwitches?  Currently, only enable us NIC Teaming for VM vSwitch only.

    Thank you

VSwitch vMotion, we have 2 assigned NIC (nic2 and nic6) with 10 VLANS.  NIC2 and nic6 are connected to 2 different physical switches.

    Should I choose

    (1) both are active

    (2) both are assets + grouping of NETWORK cards?

Question - if there is only 1 VLAN, it seems that NIC Teaming is also not very useful unless we use 2 VLAN (Multi-NIC vMotion).  Is this right?

If you use Multi-NIC vMotion, there is no need to have two different VLANS, all you need is depending on configuration

on your vMotion switch, please create two vmkernel port for vMotion with the same VLAN ID, but the grouping of NETWORK cards as below

    vMotion_1 - VLAN ID: 10

    Grouping of NETWORK cards

    vmnic2 - active

    vmnic6 - watch

    vMotion_2 - VLAN ID: 10

    vmnic6 - active

    vmnic2 - watch

  • Isolate the vMotion and storage traffic?

We use ESXi 5.1 using two physical switches for management traffic and two physical switches for VM and storage vMotion traffic. We use a DVSwitch with VLANS separated for VMs (125), storage (126) and vMotion traffic (127). My question is really about the physical switch setting. I have installation of VLANs, 125, 126 and 127 on my main switch with each of them having a layer 3 interface. I think that only the network of the VM (vlan 125) needs a layer 3 interface. In other words, my VLAN storage and vMotion is not routable by removing the 3 layer interface.

    Does this sound correct?

Another twist, I have a Juniper switch where all layer 3 interfaces are defined. It is connected to 4 switches in the rear of my IBM Bladecenter. Two of these switches are Cisco 1 GB switches that carry all traffic to the management through a vSwitch network. The other two switches are BNT 10 GB switches that carry traffic for Storage vMotion and VMs. Of course, it's a network connection, because it carries several VLANS.

My only question now is should I eliminate interface layer 3 on my storage network located on one vlan separate

Well, you need your storage system accessible on these IP addresses by the systems for the management of the other subnets or such? You already have all traffic from subnet inter between iSCSI and other networks? If this isn't the case, then there is no need to have routable iSCSI network.

For the ESXi hosts themselves there is usually zero reason to have vmkernel iSCSI interfaces be routable since you already do management etc on another routable network (and responses of hosts would be sent there as well except if you define static routes custom).

Can someone explain how to configure the ports VMotion using VIRTUAL LANs.

    Here's the design;

Two network adapters for teaming on a virtual standard switch 0

A network for management and another network for VMotion traffic

The ports management group is on VLAN 103 and its default gateway is set to the network VLAN 103

When I add a for VMotion VMkernel port group and configure the network, and I use the gateway of 103 VLAN by default I can't vmkping the other interfaces for VMotion similar configuration.

If I change the default gateway settings and use VMotion gateway, then bad things happen, i.e. lose connectivity to the service console.

    Thanks,-Jeff

Both an eon of ar sthjey the same physical segment (i.e., the plughed in the same physical switch) there will be no need for a gateway for the vmotion network address.

  • Replacement of the corporate network switches how ESX and VM will react?

We replace all our switches in current network with new gear. All our ESX network connections are redundant (console, vmotion and virtual machine) with each connection associated with a different switch (for example the virtual machine NIC is connected to different switches and the same for other groups of ports). I was wondering what will happen when migrate us to the new switches. We intend to make this port a port at a time. My guess is that when we have the first virtual machine network cable and move again preconfigured port switch all the VMS on this NETWORK adapter will switch to the other NETWORK adapter as if it was a failure. The migrated Server NETWORK card will be auto-negotiation with the new port and become availble for use but VM will not request for load balancing between the two network cards. We then will at some point to move the other virtual machine from the old network card switch to a new switch and the VM are switched to the new other switch port and as the first card NETWORK occurs autonegotiation and the nic will become available. But how do I get the network traffic balancing across both connections of NIC's virtual machine? I understand that load balancing of virtual machine through the NETWORK interface only to the market and vmotions card - is this true and if so how can I force a reload balance or even manually load balance... Thank you

Failback only works when you run active / standby NIC.  If you are running active-active, you can set the host mode maint, let it drain and then leave the mode maint to allow virtual machines to come back and live on some Teddy they land on.

With respect to the passage of the switch the riskier part is to make sure that you have all the VLAN defined on the 'new' switch and that there is a layer 3 path to the front door of this switch.  When you migrate the first server I would put in mode now, put some DRS in manual mode and then make the transition.  Then a vMotion machine virtual not essential (or 1 VM for each VIRTUAL local area network) on to this host to make sure that the installer of L2 and L3 works correctly.  Make sure that the field of L2 on the old switches can talk to the L2 area on the new switches.

What kind of physical switch are you using?  Here is a link to the Cisco documentation to create the VLAN on Catalyst switches.  Create a layer 2 VLAN and create VMkernel interfaces with the appropriate IP addresses.  Don't worry about DNS or Routing and keep things simple, if you can.

    Good luck!
