New external hard drive

I bought a new larger capacity external hard drive. The old man is complete. Can I just unplug the old and plugging new, then follow Time Machine?  Is everything be stored safely? So how can I have the old disk since it will have a lot of information. Thank you

You may need to format the disk external drive for Time Machine requires a disc formatted in Mac format and most of the readers are BLAH a come PC formatted to NTFS.

After you put shaped (required) and the installation program TM make you that yo select the opting to do a full backup instead of continue the backup of the previous disc. For info, see:

http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html

I keep the old drive external and format/erase the drive and use it as necessary. If yo really want to clear the disk sect option erase secure in disk utility

Independent of how this feature works, you want to have your photos in one place and have a backup (second copy) somewhere else. All hard drives will not be successful at some point - some more early, some late - never trust to have your files in any safety devices if they are on a single disc. Once you have your sorted, it would be useful that you will organize/name/tag new photos immediately if the task is relatively short and simple. I copy my photos on my internal hard drive for my camera, take a quick look with preview to see who needs some changes and then decide where to put them - either drop them immediately after naming them or bring in an editing application and then file them away.

  • Transfer iTunes library to a new external hard drive.

I did a few years back, but as for the double control procedure to ensure I would correctly.

My iTunes music library is stored on an external hard drive. It's almost to capacity, if I want to transfer the files from current music on an external hard drive more.

I don't want to "lose" my preferences iTunes, settings etc that I have playlists, ratings and other data.

I understand that the first thing is physical copy music files to the new external hard drive.

What is the procedure to then "point" to the new hard drive.

    Thank you.

Copy the iTunes folder whole, not only the media, on the external drive, launch iTunes with the Option key, choose this library and keep a backup on a different drive of it.

  • I can't initialize the disk for my new external hard drive

I can't initialize the disk for my new external hard drive because the drop-down list in the Disk Management Console does not give me this option. I'm logged in as an administrator and running Windows XP.  The driver for the new hardware is not digitally signed because I can't initialize the disk.  So I can't get my new hardware to run.  Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get the option "Initialize disk" in the Disk Management Console?

    Hello Honduras1,

Can you simply right-click and format everything first?  The drive must be formatted before use, make sure that you format NTFS.

  • Historical files Windows 8 will not recognize the new external hard drive

I just bought a new laptop (Sony Vaio) with Windows 8Pro (System op 64-bit, Intel I7, 1THD).  One of the reasons is that I have approached Win8, is I liked the concept of the new 'File History' backup utility  I started to use the computer with an ext WD My Guide of the HD and the history of the files seemed to work.  Then the drive external hard went wrong and I just bought a new WD My Passport 2 t ext HD.  Historical files will not recognize this drive.  He keeps asking the old drive.  When I attached the new drive and go to the screen "Select drive", it says "no usable drives are detected.  Please connect a drive... "I know that the drive is there because I see under 'My computer' and I can copy files to it.  But the history of the files do not recognize.  WD, I called and they helped me to update drivers and even made a update firmware on the drive, but nothing is done.  I tried several fixes suggested in a few links Microsoft 'how file history works... '. «, «What to do if the file history works more...» ", etc, but all without success. The tech also remote BestBuy Geek squad my computer and tried EVERYTHING and could not get it to succeed.  BTW, it's not the HD post because put us on another computer to WIN 8 and Hx file found immediately.  Tech people thought that it was a deep registry with Win 8 problem and their only suggestion was to reimage my computer with the original recovery disk.  But who is going to cost me an arm and a leg.

I'm not very tech savvy, so I know there must be something very simple, I'm do wrong or overlooking and I hope that some dear soul on this forum or someone from Microsoft can give me an idea or two.  Thank you very much

I was having this same problem, but then noticed a presentation text easy to miss in the historical files tool that says that the disc "cannot be a part of a library" or something like that. In my case, I had files on my external hard drive that have been included in several libraries... and none that I really used, so I removed the files (and deleted the libraries for good measure). A fast system restart later, and my player does not appear.

I don't know why MS did not propose it again for this thread as the more obvious thing to check, but there you have it. Something simple and quick to check that could save you some frustration.

  • I bought a new external hard drive, but it does not appear in the library mode.

One of my external hard drives is almost full. I would like to move some of the photos from the old to the new one that I just bought. The new external drive appears in Windows Explorer, but does not appear in Lightroom.

I use Windows 7 and Lightroom CC.

    Hi Loyce1023,

In order to see the most recent external drive in Lightroom, you must either import some images of the most recent disc.

Or move some images of the old drive to the more recent, outside of Lightroom, and then reconnect the images from Lightroom.

    Kind regards

  • new external hard drive not seen by LR

Just bought a 5 TB external hard drive. The drive appears on my desktop imac computer, but dose not in LR. How it appears in LR?

Click on the + which appears to the right of the 'Files' section and select Add folder. Navigate to the new disc and create the folder to which you want to move the pictures (or select it if it is already there).

  • I really just move to a new external hard drive

With the help of Mac Cougar and LR 4.3. I want to have everything on an external hard drive, but need to move now to a smaller drive to another bigger. How?

Probably the best way to go is to use the Finder to all move to the new HD, keeping the same folder tree structure, and then inside Lightroom reconnect (as explained here: http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm)

UPDATE: I assume that when you say 'everything', you mean the photos and not the catalog file.

  • NEW EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE IS NOT RECOGNIZED IN WINDOWS 8, BUT IS PRESENT IN DEVICE MANAGER AND IN DISK MANAGEMENT (NOT ME LEAVES NO ASSIGN A NEW DRIVE LETTER PATH)

I buy a new drive external hard 2T hard drive (plug-n-play) for my new Windows System. When I launch the device I have here a beep let me know the unit is plugged on my USB (3.0 or 2.0 as it is backward compatible) but when I go to my computer, the device does not appear, and as such I can't use it. When I go to the devices it is recognized and works apparently correctly. After some browsing on the net, I was told that I have to assign a drive letter. Thus entering disk management, the unit is, properly partitioned. However, when I right click on the appropriate partition gout the menu to change the disk path appears but is grayed out, and as such I can't use to assign a path drive letter. I checked to see if I run as administrator which I believe that I am by default when I first activated Windows. Is there anyone who has experienced this same problem or know a fix?

    Thank you very much

    Ron

Hi, I solved the problem with help. Because Device Manager wouldn't let me not use the format option I deleted the main partition by right click on the partition and then the wizard formatted the partition to NTFS, as I store a few large recording Daw. During the process of the wizard automatically assigned a letter from path of reader (e) but you can choose other. The drive was originally formatted FAT 32. The main problem I had was in the drop-down list that appears when I just clicked on the primary partition was options of Format and assign new drive letter have been greyed out... the only option left to delete the partition and reformat the drive. It's a new external so I didn't not lose all content.

  • Format a new external hard drive

I'll use for the backup of photos (in addition to other backups I have).

    1. do I need to do a Partitions (TLE say to choose a single Partition and perhaps other documents coming in another Partition)?

Or I can make 2 folders: one for photos and other documents - both on the same a Partition? If no necessary partition...

    2. If I have to make a Partition (s), can I have them before deleting the disk or after?

    Thank you.

If you erase the disc you will erase all partitions and volumes of storage on the disk.  You don't need to create separate partitions for images and documents, but you can if you wish.  Think of it as a drawer inside a closet - you want to store your photos in two separate drawers or in the drawer?  When you allocate space in a partition of that space is reserved for that specific partition.

A partition is logically a storage device is divided into separate storage parts.  When a partition is formatted with a file system, it becomes a storage volume.  You need at least one partition formatted in order to at least have a single storage volume to store files on a storage device.

There are a lot of resources are you can read: http://www.howtogeek.com/184659/beginner-geek-hard-disk-partitions-explained/ or search Google to learn more.

  • How to transfer Time Machine backup to the new external hard drive

I'm upgrading to a 1 hard external to the Western reader to with 5 TB of Seagate.  This is because Time Machine has used the 1 TB drive.  How can I transfer the files from backup Time Machine from the old to the new drive so that backups continue to have access to the old files.

Although the documentation Apple says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it is very slow and sometimes does not.

This technique works only if the volume that you copy to the same size or larger that that you are copying to.

First of all, please open the Time Machine preference pane and click the Select Disk... button. You may be able to unlock the settings first, by clicking on the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window. Log in as administrator.

Remove the volume you want to copy in the list of backup destinations. Then turn off Time Machine.

Launch disk utility, open the built-in Help and search for the term 'Double '. Follow the instructions. All existing data on the destination volume will be deleted. That shouldn't be a problem, because you do not want to mix non-sauvegarde and backup data on the same drive anyway.

If the volume you are copying has been encrypted by Time Machine, you must first unlock it. Click the release button in the toolbar of the disk utility window.

Turn Time Machine back on and select the new volume as a backup destination. Alternatively, you can continue to use the old volume, if you wish. Both will be alternated when both are available.

ATTENTION: If you copy the volume is corrupted, as shown by the ERD or first aid in disk utility, while corruption is copied to the new drive. Do not copy data from a damaged on a faulty disk volume. Put aside the reader and do not use until you don't know that you no longer need the data. Then securely erase it and bring it to a recycling center. Do the same if the restore operation fails with "disk errors."

  • Can't see the new external hard drive connected to my iMac for my MacBook?

    Hi all

I connected a new 8 TB external Seagate HD to my iMac and I try to see it from my MacBook Air and MacBook to my partner.

It is properly formatted (journaled MacOS and GUID) and have not had any problems with the 3 TB drive, that we were connected before.

File sharing on and everything seems normal.

For the life of me, I can't drive/partitions from the MacBook, although he is able to see the old drive.

    Any help appreciated.

    Thank you

    Hey Dr.Tobyk,

  • New external hard drive is of poor quality

    Hiya:

Gotta new iMac 27 "El Capitan running and I am trying to transfer my files from my old Windows on my Mac machine. The player in question is a Seagate 3TO disk that has been formatted as NTFS on my Windows machine. I never partitioned and formatted when it displayed 2.32 TB of space available in the Windows 10.

I connected the player via an external enclosure and USB (2.0) cable. OS X says it couldn't read the disc, so I transferred all my files on another external drive on my windows machine, connected to my Mac and formatted to the Apple standard. He did format, however it says I only have 801,57 GB of capacity, 801.44 available. I ejected the drive, he reformatted and chooses the "Apple Partition map" as an option and still the same. I hope that I have covered all the bases?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

    -Jon K.

In disk utility, make sure that you select the physical disk, and not on a partition. What capacity would you say? You will need to repartition the disk.
