  I am installing a new hard drive in my late 2011 13 "MacBook Pro. I started using apple's online retrieval system and went to disk utility. I tried to format the drive, but he is stuck saying "remove disc" for about a half hour, and then I had a rotation beach ball and could not move the cursor.   In order to exclude extensions as a possible culprit in the dysfunction of the dialog, could you try to open Firefox Safe mode? It is a standard diagnostic tool in order to avoid interference by extensions (and some custom settings). More info: questions to troubleshoot Firefox in Safe Mode.

  You can restart Firefox in Mode safe mode using either:

  • 3-bar menu button > "?" button > restart with disabled modules
  • (menu bar) Help > restart with disabled modules

  Firefox has to close, then displays a small dialog box: click on 'Start mode safe' (not Reset)
