  • Cannot open e-mail messages. MSG, it's that there is no program associated with this file and define and association. Have no clue as to how or what program choose. Thank you jp__

    problem is email

I assume you are talking about email attachments.  Each attachment has a three-character extension that associates the file with a program (in the start menu / default of programs / associate a file or Protocol with a program and then scroll through the list for the three-character extension).  Many are well known (.doc for Word Documents) and .pdf for Adobe Reader documents, but some are not so well known.  Some are also used by several different programs is sometimes important to know what program created the file in order to know what program to associate with her.  Your best bet since it is emails is to ask the sender to you say the name and version of the program so that you can install a program that can at least find out if is not working with the file if you do not recognize the extension.  Some attachments to e-mail are not intended to be read and there are programmatic reasons and must not be opened (but I can't give you a list of all of them - barely know they exist).

Sometimes you can google the extension (for example, google .avi http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/terms/avi.cfm) and a link arises which will tell you what programs can do the file type and which programs can read or work with the file type (or you may need to go to other links to get this reversal - in this case a lot of programs can open the file because it is a very common file for which many different programs have been developed - program that it becomes irrelelevant).  If it's a single program, so you know what you need.  If more than one program, you must the sender to tell what program you used to create the file unless the .avi file that can be read by the host (or you can guess or try different options until you find one that works but this can take a long time, can damage the open file with wrong program and can be expensive if you buy one of the programs that you are testing).

In fact you do not define an association.  When you install the program, the extensions it can handle are identified by the Setup program and included in the listing file associations.  In fact, there is no way to add an extension to the registration of the association - you can change the programs that are used by the extensions in the list by default.  Some extensions are added automatically by Vista when installed and work a little differently than others (for example, .lnk or .exe), but we don't need to go into that, unless the extension you are having problems with is one of those (you don't mention the extension so I can't give you advice).

    I hope this helps.

  • When I try to play games on windows vista I get a message saying "this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the control panel of the associations. How can I fix it?

    XXXXXX

    Hi Randy,

Welcome to the Windows Vista answers Forum!

I have a few questions about your concerns:

    (a) game in which you try to read?

    (b) is this the case with all games or any game in particular?

    (c) you are trying to play the games that are built with Window Vista?

    (d) what version of Window Vista do you use?

You can also try the suite of measures to define the association:

    1. open the control panel. (Classic view)

2 click the default programs icon.

3 click on the link associated with a file type or Protocol with a program . (See screenshot below)

4 click the extension file type to change which program .exe association opens. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: It may take a while to load up

5 click on change program button.

6 if the list, select the program that you want to be associated with (opens) the file extension. (See screenshot below)

    (A) check the always use the selected program to open this type of program , and then click OK.

7 if the program is not listed, then click the Browse button and navigate to the .exe of the program you want to default to open the file extension.

    (a) select the program.

    (b) click on the Open button

    (C) check the always use the selected program to open this type of program and click OK to apply.

    This should solve your problem.

    Hope this information is useful.

    1. download and save the attachment to the office.
    2. right click on the saved file.
    3. Select: Open with on the shortcut menu.

    6. check: always use the selected program to open this type of file.
    7. click on OK.

This should allow you to open these attachments directly from email address now.

Great, I can help you right now.  Just open your C:\Users\Peggy\Downloads folder.  While you're looking at him, make a right click on the file icon and choose 'Open with', then "Choose program" you can get the Notepad in the list.

Here is an example. This example is Windows 7, so it seems a little different, but the steps are the same:

    1. Right click on the file
    2. Go to "open with".
    3. Choose "Notepad."  If Notepad is not listed, use the option "choose by default" to find Notepad instead.

This will open the file for you to view the data inside.
