not case sensitive UNIX commands?

Howdy,

Maybe the books on Unix I use are just too old and not OS X specific. But they all say that the commands are case-sensitive, while system variables are.

For example, ls and LS both work in the way as described in the books. I searched the internet and I saw concerns using the auto-completion tab being case-sensitive, but nothing regarding orders. But the answers regarding the tab thing throws blame on HFS not being is not case-sensitive. So if I understand correctly, orders are in fact files and therefore HFS design and there are a not case-sensitive. What is a good conclusion?

Thank you very much

DN

Hmm, I guess I meant are tiny, while variables are uppercase in the traditional Unix system of things.

  • Cannot create disk image writable, case-sensitive on El Capitan

    Hi all

It is my first time posting, so bear with me, pls if this seems to be a stupid question.

I tried to create a HFS disk image + case-sensitive (logged) on my MacBook (early 2015 model. OSX El Capitan 10.11.2).

The goal is to build Android AOSPS (according to the website of the AOSPS, case-sensitive file system is required).

But so far, I was not able to successfully create a desired image (sensitive to case AND write).

With "Disk utility", I was able to create an image in writing (i.e. when mounted, the file system is read/write) but not case sensitive.

Why is "Disk utility" unable to do so because it provides even an option for "logging case-sensitive HFS +?

Then I tried to use "hdiutil create" tool command-line (based on the results of online research), which has succeeded in creating case-sensitive, but read-only images (i.e. when mounted, file system is read-only).

I tried different combinations of "-format ' & '-fs ' options, but nothing seems to work so far.

With the help of 'hdiutil convert' does not help.

    All opinions are appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

This is a bug. The solution is to clear the disk image mounted in disk utility, choose HFS case-sensitive like the format.

  • Migration using Time Machine - case sensitive issue

I get a message "the selected source can't be used for migration-source do not use a case-sensitive file system" when I try to migrate using a Time Machine backup.  Any ideas?

What this comes down to say the following:

    • Your existing backups located on a volume that is NOT case sensitive. In other words, it has been partitioned as Mac OS extended (journaled).
    • The destination drive you are trying to migrate these files to is a volume that is case-sensitive. In other words, it is partitioned as Mac OS extended (case-sensitive, journaled).

You can check this in OS x disk utility by selecting the drive and then, by selecting file > read the information.

The image below is an example of result to do. Note the value of parameter "is case-sensitive. In this case, this volume is not case sensitive, which means that a file named Bob or bob would be the same file. It is the default setting for the Mac's internal hard drive.

I think that the only option at this point is to change the volume of destination is NOT case-sensitive to proceed with the migration.

    Hello viper158,

Content research are focused on the floor, are not case-sensitive and cannot be made so. However, capital letters or characters of punctuation in the words are considered as starting a new Word and can be found. For example, a search for "hop" returns files that contain Hip Hop HipHop or hip hop but not Hiphop.

  • DVD cannot install on Mac to format hard disk [using a case-sensitive file system]

This morning I received my DVD with Lightroom 6 Win/Mac. I have inserted in my drive superdrive. 'Standard' OS X file system is not case sensitive. Although you can use upper and lowercase in a filename to the extent where the system is concerned 'Filename' and 'filename' are the same. So if you try to copy files with the same name regardless of the case so the copy will result in a dialog box asking if you want to replace a file of the same name.

I guess in your case, your disks have been formatted with case-sensitive file system, and you should generally refrain from using a file system case-insensitive with OS X.

  • Photoshop CS6 (extended) installation on case-sensitive disks

I understand that under the "requirements" of the Adobe Web site says you can't install PS CS6 (Extended) on the case-sensitive drives (I use a MacBook Pro, OS X v. 10.7.4).  This seems to have been the case at least since CS5.

I did not see this, and I bought (excitedly) update CS PS5 (Extended) to SP6.  I had NO PROBLEM installation PS5 on this drive.

Of course, as others have said, the installer refuses to allow you to install on a case-sensitive drive (for example, no options to install on another drive).  There is also no mention that CS6 must be installed on the boot drive.

Requiring installation on the boot drive has serious implications for those of us who need readers sensitive to other work; I don't want to have to restart on another drive when I use PS and switch back and forth - it's all just stupid.

From my point of view (as a user, granted), this is lazy programming, and this must be resolved as soon as POSSIBLE.  At least in my case, I have a piece of a $400 software just too place, when I want to be up to my eyeballs enjoying PS6 throughout it's fame.

Outside an Adobe fix, I don't see a solution to this problem.  If I wipe my drive, put in shape in case-insensitive, then I lose the functionality for other critical work.  In addition, I'm not sure the process of wiping the disk, formatting it not sensitive to case and restore TimeMachine everything would be even work (since the backup hardware is from a case-senstive drive and try to go to a drive that is not case sensitive).

The REALLY frustrating part is that I have installed Photoshop 3, 4 and 5 (and much, much further) on the casing of the disks - all with no problem.  It is only now that the question slap me in the face.

It has to be a work around, if not a 'real' solution.

What help you might be able to offer would be greatly appreciated; details can be sent to cdretk at gmail dot com

I hope, and I thank you in advance.

Now I solved it (no thanks Adobe, who I am very disappointed).

In the past, when you wanted to install something on your Mac, you simply copy a folder in your Applications directory.

Photoshop (among other programs) got more complicated, it is decided that it must install things in the different system directories and potentially in your user directory.

That is the question (and the solution, in this case).  My user directory is on the drive that is case-sensitive.  I don't know what Adobe needs to install (as Photoshop is, after installation, available to all users), but this has been the key.

SOLUTION: Log on as another user (administrator-enabled) and install it.  Bang - it works without any problem.

Yes, I still had to copy all my plug-ins, etc. of the PS5 by hand (and sort those SP6 is not like - once again at hand), but at least it works.

Good software engineering practices dictate that installed software should PREFER discs case-sensitive and not case insensitive (think of the data).

Good installation support (on the phone) should at least suggest trying another user account...

SELECT queries are case insensitive. To perform a search case-sensitive,
You must add the binary before the search value. If you have
used Dreamweaver Log server behavior to the user, you must go to
Mode Code to modify the SQL query, which should look something like this:

$LoginRS__query = sprintf ("SELECT username, pwd FROM users WHERE
    user name = %s AND pwd = %s',
    GetSQLValueString ($loginUsername, "text"),
    GetSQLValueString (password$, "text"));

    Change to this:

$LoginRS__query = sprintf ("SELECT username, pwd FROM users WHERE username =
    BINARY %s AND pwd = BINARY %s. "
    GetSQLValueString ($loginUsername, "text"),
    GetSQLValueString (password$, "text"));

Who will uphold the case looking for the username and password.
