I clicked on OK, something got quickly downloaded and installed, and this beautiful useful window transformed into a window printer Win7 pretty generic. The printer and scanner-specific options or hp disappeared. I always get the picture of the printer and the hp logo, etc., but in the lower part of this window all I see the following options:

  It's a pretty good trick, considering that charmap.exe is one of the files that Windows File Protection is supposed to protect.

  Do a full disc search for charmap (without extension), making sure to look into the hidden files and system.

  If charmap.exe is not in C:\Windows\system32 (where it belongs), he probably is not in C:\Windows\system32\dllcache (where it also belongs).

  If you have a directory (which is common for systems with Windows) C:\i386 pre-installed, you should find charmap.ex_, which is a compressed version of the file.  You must use the EXPAND command from a command prompt window (start > run > cmd > OK) to decompress:
