  There are TONS of OCR options out there. Even if your printer is not necessarily delivered with a release of box OCR solution you can always us third-party software to do what you are looking for. Here is a link for the top 5 free OCR software tools. The article is a bit dated you can search in your favorite search engine to find the solution that best fits your needs. I went to the Microsoft Office Document Imaging or OCR via google Docs, as I have already included it with office and use google Docs quite heavily.   I use windows 7 and until recently could open the printer and the HP support Assistant using the icons on the desktop. Now when I clicked on the icon of the printer that is used to open in Notepad, but now it wont open at all and support assistant says it has stopped working and the error message indicates that windows will close and that it is seeking a solution siutable.

  Please someone offer some kind of advice on how to recover the two icons back to the normal conditions of use.

  I would say uninstalling the software of the printer.

  Once it is uninstalled, I suggest you put your system in clean boot mode in the configuration of Microsoft.  You can do this by following this document: How to perform a clean boot in Windows.

  Once the computer is in clean boot mode, I would suggest to reinstall the HP printer install wizard for Windows.
