Office 2003 on PC Windows 7 used to run XP

A computer used to run XP has Windows 7 installed for some time. He also had Office 2003 is installed for some time. It just started coming up with a message, "Microsoft Security Essentials requires your attention.  Support for this operating system ends"

This means operating system or should it make reference to the office?

Someone else did the 'upgrade', so I don't know how they did it.

Someone suggested that looks like Security Essentials is to find traces of Win XP.

Is the a file named C:\Windows.old (you have to enable Show hidden files and folders in Windows Explorer) to see this. There you have Windows.old contains the remains of Windows XP and should be deleted.

You can try to delete it in 'safe' mode and see if it works. He could do just for you.

Click Start and in the search box type 'cmd', right-click on it and choose "Run as Administrator".

You now have the command window open.

In the command window type: del /S /Q /F C:\windows.old (press enter)

Then in the command window type: rmdir /S /Q C:\windows.old

    Error details: Code 646

This update provides the filter of junk e-mail in Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 a more current definition of which e-mail messages should be considered junk e-mail

I have the problem with this... I couldn't update this update. How can I rectify this?

Sorry, you have problems getting your patches installed. I have a number of things for you to look at.  First of all, your Background Intelligent Transfer Services set to Automaticand started and Windows Update ? You can check these settings by typing services.msc in the search box of the start menu.

Since they are all Office updates, you can do a repair for office function.  To do this, click the Start button, type programs and features and click the enter key. Right click on Microsoft Office 2007 and choose change.  Choose fix and continue.  Microsoft Office will attempt to fix any problems there (this will) take a few minutes to run.

Sometimes in order to get patches to install correctly, you must perform these tasks manually.  Here are the links where you can download and run the patch:

    KB976382

    KB981725

If this does not work, try to run the Microsoft OneCare safety scanner.  Sometimes it will solve problems of hidden registry, or can clear the virus that can prevent the installation of the patches: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm. Click full service scan, and then Quick scan (full scan takes a long time to complete). Try the patches.

Hope this helps to get your installed patches.

You can not uninstall IE8 on Windows 7, but you can disable access to it (for example, to disable IE8). Similarly, you cannot reinstall IE8 in Windows 7, but you can reactivate access to him (i.e., turn on IE8).

If it's a Win7 64-bit computer, you have two versions of IE8: IE8 64 bit (the default) and IE8 32 bit. See this previous discussion: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/InternetExplorer/thread/babaa5f8-ff06-4ea2-aef6-a9416d65f981

The malicious software removal tool does not use an installer. As a general rule, when you run the malicious software removal tool, it creates a temporary directory named at random on the root of the drive of the computer. This directory contains several files, and it includes the Mrtstub.exe file. Most of the time, this folder is automatically deleted after the tool to the end of execution or the next time that you start the computer. However, this folder may not always be automatically deleted. In these cases, you can manually delete this file, and this has no adverse effect on the computer.

Visit the Microsoft Solution Center and antivirus security for resources and tools to keep your PC safe and healthy. If you have problems with the installation of the update itself, visit the Microsoft Update Support for resources and tools to keep your PC updated with the latest updates.

  • Windows XP and Office 2003?

I took my PC repair and now I have Windows XP and Office 2003 on my computer. Should I have them both? Something sure ' nuf slowed down my computer. I paid almost as much to repair I did for my PC. It came loaded with XP.  Thank you very much for your help!

Microsoft Office, including "Office 2003"is a previous version, is a 'suite' or a collection of programs, including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Powerpoint, etc.

If you delete "Office 2003", you'll remove all of these programs... that you may or may not care.

You are interested in the creation of documents (paper) or reading documents created by others? If so, you'll probably want to keep your Word.

You care no doubt on the use of sheets (Excel) spreadsheet or presentations (Powerpoint), but again, it is to you.

A potential problem is your email.  One of the programs included in Microsoft Office 2003 is "Outlook 2003", which is an e-mail program that you can or cannot use.  If you are using Outlook 2003 for your e-mail, you will be no longer able to do so, if you completely remove Office 2003.

If you were my grandmother, I would say that you do nothing unless your computer is low on hard disk space: click on 'My computer' and when it opens up, do a right click on 'disk Local (c)' and select Properties; "as long as the 'free space' (shown in magenta) is more that about 15% of the 'ability', you have nothing to worry about).

If you see a screen like this, I would say also that you have BOTH boxes down achecked and then click on the OK button (it will speed up your computer a bit and also free up disk space).  Whatever you do, DO NOT CHECK the box compress things.
