Old updates/downloads can be deleted?

I downloaded as more than 100 updates over the years. When a new update is downloaded, can I remove the old updates? I hope MSFT will automatically clean the old updates or provide a tool for this. Thank you.

You should not remove the update but you can delete the uninstall information.

I'll assume you mean the hard drive space.  You can also use Disk Cleanup to help the removal of junk. You can uninstall old programs is no longer, you use or alternatively, get a bigger hard drive.

As to your question about updates - see: http://taurarian.mvps.org/WU_XP/removing_old_windows_updates.htm

Folders that have uninstall as part of the name (for example $NtUninstallKB282010$ who reside in C:\windows (hidden files) are window Hot difficulty updating folders/files) can be removed safely (providing ever, you wish to uninstall the updates). I recommend you leave these records for a period of at least one month to make sure that the update works correctly.

These updates can be removed individually or together. To learn more about the update/s go on:

NB: XXXXXX = the actual number, not to mention the "Q" or "Ko."

Once you have removed the uninstall folders/files, then go to control panel, add/remove programs. Select the title of the corresponding Windows fix on the folder/file of the patch you just deleted, and select Delete. You will get a Windows error. This is because you deleted the uninstall folder/files. Simply choose OK and the entry will be removed from the Add/Remove Programs list.

  • Mystery Microsoft Files-Do I have need of all these files or can I delete the batch?

I have 3 files on my C drive, all named as a string to a number, for example 6a34b3f7ad5039dc26e3c4. In these cases, there is a 25 folders numbered 1025, 1028, 1030 1031 etc over a folder 'graphics' and 'customer '. then there are all the other files inclusing .bmp for microsoft.NET and set up etc. In the numbered records are 3 files, Eula.rtf (clearly Microsoft but all in Japanese), LocalizedData.xml and SetupResources.dll.

I need all these files or do I have to delete the batch? I'm guessing that they are something to do with the windows updates...

    Thank you

These are usually leftovers from Windows Update and can be deleted safely after you restart your computer to make sure that they are not in use and/or staged for an update that will continue after a reboot.

  • can I delete old files from the version of the download folder?

Original title: Deleting files from the download folder"

I have improved my bit in Windows Vista, there are a large number of files downloaded into my download folder, can I delete the old version files?

    Hello

Thanks for posting in the Microsoft Community.

If I understand correctly you want to delete the content in the folder downloads.

Things that you download are actually Setup. Beams compressed files that are checked in the folder programs.

If after installing the program these installation files have no real use because all the content has been extracted and copied.

So you can delete them. But I suggest you keep a backup, because in case you want to reinstall them they will be very practical.

Hope this information helps. Response to help you further. We are happy to help you.

  • downloaded updates of files can I delete the installation packages to free up disk space

After having been to the bass and installed, can I delete the installation packages to free up disk space
    and how?

This problem may occur if the Windows Update software distribution folder has been corrupted. We can refer to the following steps to rename this folder. Please note that the file will be re-created the next time we visit the Windows Update site.

    I. close all open windows.

II. click on the "Start" button, click "all programs" and click "Accessories".

III. - click on "command prompt" and click "run as administrator".

IV. in "administrator: command prompt"window, type "net stop WuAuServ" (without the quotes) and press ENTER. "

Note: Please, look at the cmd window and make sure that it is said that it was successfully stopped before we try to rename the folder.

    V. click on the Start button, in the "Search" box, type "%windir%" (without the quotes) and press ENTER.

VI. in the opened folder, find the folder named "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution".

VII. right click on the folder, select Rename and type "SDold" (without the quotes) to rename this folder.

VIII. while still in the "administrator: command prompt" window, type the command "net start WuAuServ" (without the quotes) in the opened window to restart the service Windows updates.

Note: Please, look at the cmd window and make sure that it is said that it has been started.

    Reset.

My Toshiba laptop is 5 years old and has a ton of updates.  He has SP2 on board.  I have a 80 GB hard drive, and these updates take almost 40 GB of it.  Can I remove or clean up some of these updates?

    Susan,

There is no such thing as 'old' updates. They are there to protect against a vulnerability or to provide updates to the o/s.

The purpose of take away their defeats being there.

If you need more space, you must put in a bigger hard drive. Or get an external hard drive and put your data on it.

The cost of discs is extremely low at the moment.
