  I try to play a legitimate, belonging to DVD, but Windows Media Player 12 will not play on my computer Windows 7 Professional.  The DVD worked a few days ago, but all of a sudden, I get the following error message:

  I did a lot of research of these forums and on the ' net.  Here are the suggested steps I tried without success:

  • I tried VLC player.  This works.  However, rather than use this workaround, I wish to find a solution to my problem WMP/WMC.
  • I tried several DVD for years over the last decade.  These DVD works on my laptop, also running Windows 7 Professional and the shark 007 codec.
  • I uninstalled my Shark 007 codec
  • I tried other codecs (K-Lite)
  • I assured that the latest drivers are installed on my video card, XFX ATI Radeon 5850
  • I tried to uninstall Nero 9
  • I tried to use the Windows 7 troubleshooting options:
  • > Reading and burning CD, DVD and Blu - ray (no problem)
  • > Windows Media Player DVD (no problem)
  • > Windows Media Player Settings (detects a problem, wants to restore factory settings, every time, no matter what happens)
  • A system restore to a time when the DVD was working did not resolve the issue
  • The different links in Microsoft, I found in this forum about this problem do not seem to be useful.  There is a link that points to the set-top boxes, but this page just says: "Windows 7 comes with a decoder.
  • I assured the latest driver is available by going to "Device Manager", right click on the drive, then click on "update driver software".
  • I assured that the latest firmware is installed directly from the manufacturer's website.
  • I tried to reset my DRM by renaming the DRM under C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows folder and by going to this Web site to upgrade:http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/Indivsite/en/indivit.asp?force=1
  • I've uninstalled and reinstalled Windows Media Player 12 and Windows Media Center via the function "functionality in Windows.

  I would be very grateful if a Microsoft technology could chime.  Thanks for your help!

Your DVD decoder and Windows Media Player have software to copy protection that decodes the information on the DVD just before posting.   Make sure you create your media recovery HP or USB Flash Recovery discs before you edit or change anything.

  Your computer does not have Microsoft's Downgrade rights and you must buy a copy of Windows 7 with a valid Microsoft COA and product key.

  The screenshots below is from a laptop HP 15 t-j100... options and the configuration on your computer screens may differ.

  You will need to DISABLE "Secure Boot" and ENABLE "Legacy Support" in the "Configuration of the BIOS start-up secure" on the settings page similar to what is shown below, until you try to install Windows 7.

  

  After you save the changes, the computer will ask you to confirm the changes... Accept the changes by typing the four digit code and press the ENTER"" key.

  

  If you install Windows 7 from a USB and see a message of "load a driver - a required CD/DVD drive device is missing", it's because as 'System Configuration' > 'Config USB3.0 in pre-start' is set to 'Enabled '. This should be set to 'Auto '.

  

  In addition, as the factory hard drive is partitioned as TPG, you must start using the internal CD/DVD UEFI or UEFI-Key/key USB to install Windows on a GPT-partitioned disk.   I suggest using Windows 7 SP1 for the best installation experience. If the DVD does not start as UEFI, you may need to use a USB Flash drive (can ask "Quick start" DISABLING in BIOS) as the installation media. Please note that some computers may not recognize a valid active UEFI USB Flash drive if it is formatted in NTFS and may require only a FAT32 formatted USB Flash drive. You should be able to make a FAT32 formatted Windows 7 installation USB Flash drive using Rufus, UNetbootin, Universal USB Installeror WiNToBootic. I like Rufus, because it contains options for 'Plan of GPT partition for UEFI computer' and 'FAT32'.

  Unlike Windows XP & Vista, Win7 does not have a default email Client. [What were thinking?]

  Rufus can create a bootable copy instead:

  

  Rufus - credit: Pete bastard/Akeo

  After installing Rufus:

  • Launch it
  • Select the ISO Image
  • Point to the file ISO for Windows 10
  • Check create a disk bootable using
  • Select GPT partitioning to EUFI firmware as the Partition scheme
  • Choose FAT32 NOT NTFS as file system
  • Make sure that your USB in the device list
  • Click Start
  • Close when you are finished
