OptiPlex 7020 and RAID array

Greetings.

I bought an Optiplex 7020 and controller card SATA referenced in this post after you speak with a representative and come far from believing the 7020 and the SATA controller card combination would allow me to set up a RAID 1 array. I bought both the 7020 and the controller Dell card.

However, after several conversations with the Dell and Technical Support Technical Support Startech, I'm still not able to get this working. I am able to enter in the configuration menu of controller card at startup in addition to being able to access the system BIOS. The BIOS shows 'Mass Storage' assigned to the PCI Express slot (as it should), but complains without hard drive being found when I try to start.

Just for clarity: I'm not trying to use a built-in RAID configuration and try instead to use a controller card to take care of the RAID array. So I am (perhaps erroneous) belief that the 'RAID ON' in the BIOS setting is unimportant because the controller card takes care of the RAID array. BTW: My BIOS is not a parameter "RAID ON". I say just that to prevent an answering machine to take me on the way to the RAID configuration integrated. The 7020 does not come with built-in RAID.

In fact, this Dell page said I need to "buy additional hardware", which is exactly what I did when I bought the controller card - or at least I thought.

So the questions are: what should I do to be able to get my Optiplex 7020 to mirror the first drive on a second so that the second is bootable immediately in case one breaks down?  Do I need a software solution instead? Do I need extra hardware yet?

Thanks in advance!

If this card requires a driver, so it is probably not responsible until Windows loads BIOS will not be able to see the drives connected on this card to boot from one of them.

And according to the Manual, the startup options are:

To specify the order in which the computer attempts to find an operating system. The options are:

  1. Floppy drive
  2. WDC WD2500AAKX-75U6AA0
  3. USB storage device
  4. CD/DVD/CD-RW drive
  5. Integrated NETWORK interface

Therefore, there is no option to say BIOS to get a boot on PCI - e drive.

That said, it is made reference to the Intel RAID controller in the manual, which suggests it could work with this system.

Win 8/8.1 and win 10, there is a built-in utility called "storage space" to create a mirror. Two drives must be connected to the SATA ports on the motherboard and probably identical in size. So give that a try...

One of the major downfalls of Aperture is that it shows you where are your pictures. They always favored it as a feature (even as a ' new paradigm'), but it's not so wonderful when you need to do something about Apple never intended. Then, it sounds really like it led to you not knowing where your files or files that correspond to which elements of the UI opening. I suggest that you need to nail for yourself - images from Aperture to right click and choose Show in Finder, until you know where everything is.

Otherwise, make sure you have plenty of available disk space, stop asking questions and just see what happens when you run plugin import LR with the options I suggested. It won't damage the opening.

  • HP Envy 17 and Raid-0

    Hello

I have an Envy 17-j005tx (Australian model) and hoped to Exchange internal 1 TB 5400 RPM HDD to the SSD and it places in a Bay Raid-0. I understand the pro/cons on different Raid configurations.

I do all my work in virtual machines, with instant regular backed up over the network. So if they are not lacking, in theory downtime is limited to the time it takes to get new readers and the time to copy the snapshot in return.

Q:  It is possible to configure the 17 want to start the Raid array-0? and wouldn't be a hardware or software raid?

Manual stipulates that cell has 'Accelerometer (HP Mobile Data Protection System 3D) RAID 0/1 Support' - I'm looking for more information/confirmation before buying the hardware.

Is could someone please tell me how 3020 Optiplex, Optiplex 9020 and Optiplex 7020 differ from each other? There are systems with the same configuration in the three models. I checked the specifications in detail for these three, but could not find difference. Even the chipset, internal locations and the IO ports are identical. The only difference I could see is the price especially for 7020, around 5 K difference.

They are all very similar in specifications and the build configurations. I don't see an option to 'build' the 7020.

  • Data store missing after the reconstruction of the raid array

One of the players in my raid array has failed a few days ago.

I had a spare drive in the table so the controller immediately began the process of rebuilding and all servers were running throughout.

When the reconstruction has been completed (I checked this via the user interface of raid array and the newspaper), I had to stop the server to remove disc defective (not replaceable chassis hot) and when I restarted the server, the data on the raid array store isn't there anymore.  I also checked through the raid controller interface that I removed the (defective) drive and that the table was always in a ready state when he came.

In vsphere client, when I click on the storage... Add link, the server sees the material but if I click then it tells me that it will be re - format the volume.  See attachment.  I have most certainly does not take the next step and reformat.  Simply, I took the screenshot and regularized.

I found these instructions, but they are for an older version of ESXi and am unsure if they are correct for ESXi 6.0.0 338124

VMware KB: Lack of data store after the reconstruction of the RAID disk/LUN

Here are the steps I should follow?

If these aren't the right instructions can you tell me the version which is for ESXi 6.0.0 338124 that I couldn't find anything either.

    Thank you

    Hi ThompsG,

Yes, there are two data stores for the virtual machine located on the RAID array.  The virtual machine itself was stored in a different data store that was not in the raid array.

I spent about 48 hours last week, including this morning, trying to coax ESXi recognizing volumes, with no luck.  Finally, I gave up and I removed the virtual computer hard drives that were on the corrupt data store.  Then the virtual machine came without problem.

Finally, since I have everything on these 2 volumes backed up to a cloud provider, I have recreated the two data stores in the raid array and began the restoration process. It is currently running and has about 16 days left to go.

  • Problem of ESXi 5.5 and RAID

So I have an ESXi host and RAID problem with a motherboard for Intel Server S1200V3RP. Basically, the problem is that the 5.5 ESXi host is not recognizing the RAID array set up with the utility integrated. See the images below for what I mean.

I did some research and my research has pointed out to me the possibility that this on the Intel Server raid controller is not actually a hardware controller but a piece of software built using the computer as controller. My research basically tells me that ESXi is super picky and don't play well with fake RAID. Although I may be wrong on this subject the behaviour of ESXi and each site Web I found says that this may be the case. I tried integrating storage and RAID drivers in the iso ESXi, I tried to update the BIOS chipset with the deployment server disk, and the management and I tried a USB installation with the drivers but nothing seems to solve this problem.

Since ESXi does not the table as something other than dedicated disks, I tried an inventive work around by choosing the AHCI BIOS and install ESXi 5.5 mode host on a dedicated disk (volume 0). Then I switched back to RAID and used the Intel Rapid Storage Management utility to configure a RAID5 to three remaining disks. It seems to work very well and I was able to access the vsphere ESXi environment. However I couldn't see the RAID volume again on vsphere storage.

I've plotted a plan where I could load the drives as individual data on the host and virtual server stores use the disk management utility or another program for RAID 3 hard drives together so that they appear as a single volume. However when I booted the system upward it appeared that the integrity of the RAID5 degraded after the addition of each drive separately (probably because he had to load a VMFS on each disc, thereby breaking the table). So this probably won't work (and even if it's possible, it's probably unnecessarily complex).

So yes, I don't have really a clear idea of the place where to go to get the RAID controller integrated to be read by ESXi. I was told that there may be compatibility issues between VMware and my Intel server model, but I checked and its on its list of approved so compatibility it couldn't be her. I guess I could just stick with dedicated drives and load the HARD drives as data stores, and then use software RAID across virtual machines - but I am concerned about the way in which redundancy will include when we drive finally fails (could I just Exchange on as a hardware raid?). I always thought that software RAID (especially on windows server disk management) smb read and write speed is terrible compared to hardware RAID.

Anyone know a solution to this problem or where I could go from here?

ESXi is not 'super picky' here. This kind of fake-RAIDs that are so common on desktop PC motherboards and entry-level rely on specific drivers provided by the hardware vendor to work really. And suppliers basically only provide Windows drivers in the first place. Any other non-OS Windows would be faced with the same question. Try installing a Linux and that you will not see your RAID volume either.

Yes, your motherboard does not use a real independent of hardware RAID but a cheap RAID/fake-software controller. See the Intel website:

  • After a failed raid array recovery my data store is missing

    Hi all

I'm under ESXi at home, but I have a problem with that I need help

First of all, let me start with the specs:

    ESXI: 5.1.0,799733

RAID Controller: Adaptec 6805 (driver of the community with the support)

Configuration of RAID: RAID 5 12,71 TB of disk

I had some problems with my RAID controller which I solved it using the Adaptec article: a table failed can be recovered? I ended up drop the table and re-create it.

The RAID array is now in OPTIMUM condition, so I started ESXi and connected using vSphere to find all my virtual machines as unknown (Inaccessible).

I started googling and found some information, but nothing so far to solve this problem.

I tried info from these links:

  • ESXi 5.5 and RAID

    Good afternoon

I recently bought a Cooler Master case and build a virtual server. The specifications are:

    CPU: Intel Core i7 3770 K @ 3.50 GHz

Motherboard: ASUSTeK COMPUTER Inc. P8Z77-V (LGA1155)

    Hard drives: 3 to 2

I chose to install the latest version of ESXi (5.5). The first question I had was the NIC not recognized. I could correct this problem by injecting an e1000 driver into the ISO using ESXi-Customizer.

The next issue, that I met him, it's the software RAID I built out of my Asus motherboard is not recognized by the installer of ESXi. In the BIOS, I have:

    Version of the BIOS 2104

    Intel virtualization technology - enabled

    SATA - RAID mode

3.6 TB RAID5 (condition: in good HEALTH)

I spoke with Asus this morning and told me that everything was going well at their end. However, they said that they do not specifically support VMware products. He suggested that finding an Async driver to add to ISO. I can not find it and have found conflicting reports of whether or not this configuration is still supported.

In short, my P8Z77-V RAID array can be seen by ESXi 5.5 and if so, how?

    Thank you

    Eric

Software RAID controllers are not supported with ESXi.  If you plan on computer using a RAID system on board, you will need to install a hardware RAID controller.  Trademarks of Adaptec or LSI would be a good starting point.

  • Restore virtual machines after building the new RAID array

    Hi all

I am new to the virtual machines, so I'm sorry for the newbie question. Currently, I have a HP ML350 G6 ESXi 5.0.0 running on 4 GB Flash hosting SD cards two virtual machines and licenses for 5 Essentials vSphere and vCenter Server 5 Essentials. I also have a RAID5 configuration with drives SAS 146 GB (6). I intend to remove all six readers and their replacement by 300 GB disks and build a RAID6 array. My question is, what would be the best practice to move the two VMS in the current RAID array to the new RAID array? Wouldn't be also simple to make backups of virtual machines or clones, exchanging the readers, the new array of construction and restoring virtual machines? If someone could point me in the right direction would be great!

    Thank you all!

Personally, I would go with backup & restore. In addition, use the downtime to upgrade the firmware of the host (HP published recently a few critical fixes on the RAID controller and some models of HARD drive).

What I would do - to avoid any problem - is to remove the host ESXi, vCenter, replace disks, update the firmware, re - install ESXi and as final step add the host to vCenter again.

  • Install ESXi cannot see the RAID array

I tried to install ESXi 5.1 on a HP Proliant Dl160 G6, with 4 hard drives of 2 TB in RAID 1 + 0 array, using a HP b110i controller. When it comes time to select the installation media ESXi to, the installer sees the 4 physical disks, rather than the logical disk that I created with the controller.

The b110i is a RAID controller-based software that does not support the ESXi.  As you have noticed it will not recognize the individual disks and it work perfectly with them as individual disks.  But if you are looking for a RAID array, you need to add another RAID controller.

  • Undetected RAID array

    I use a HP DL180 G5 equipped of an E200 HP controller.

I built two RAID arrays using the E200 controller

    1 65 GB hard drive

4 HDDs of 750 GB in RAID 5

I was able to successfully install ESXi 4.1 and everything seems to work without problems.  Except that I am unable to see the matrix RAID 2 to.  I am able to see the 1 65 GB drive, because that's where ESXi is installed.  But I can't seem to find the matrix RAID 2 to anywhere.

I tried to do a new analysis of all storage cards, but it is not always see it.  I tried to rebuild RAID 5, but it is not always see it.

When you run fdisk-l on the tech support console it does not show the RAID 5 array anywhere. I also ran lspci and it does not detect the Smart Array E200 mass storage, but it does not detect the RAID array.  DF not to see no more.

I don't know where to go from here.

What are the troubleshooting steps I can go through to find the missing RAID array?  I'm assuming that they will have to be performed from the CLI.

I have not tried to install 4 independent labels still to see if we can see them or not.  I'm sure that the disks are always good as I was running this server as a target iSCSI using Solaris 10 until a few weeks before.

    Welcome to the community,

ESX has a limitation for the disk/LUN 2 TB sizes less than 512 bytes. Assuming that you are running the latest firmware on the E200 and the upgrade of cache installed (required for RAID5) I recommend you remove the 65GB disk and create a RAID5 with 4 x 750GB disks. Since the RAID 5 create 3 logical volumes, for ESXi and 2 x 10 GB ~ 1 TB for VMFS data storage. You need to do this, use the ACU on the SmartStart CD utility.

See http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00688683/c00688683.pdf for more details E200

I tend to simply set up a unique folder for every video project that will contain all files previously stored on drives D, E and F. Before that, however, I want to solicit the comments or suggestions of others using RAID arrays.

The IMO = Im my opinion. See your the Internet Dictionary

The disk performance for the reader where export is stored is not very critical on export. CPU/GPU/memory is the usual bottleneck and exporting to: keep the fill rate on your lower raid, that you access two drives (raid and (H) at the same time instead of one (raid).

  • Determine which cluster and the array index element was clicked on table clusters

    Hello

I'm overload of brain with dynamic events and references and nodes of property etc.

I am trying to identify the cluster and the array index element that was clicked on table clusters

This gives me the name of the element:

Is this reasonable?  How can I get the index?

    Thank you

    Paul

    Hello

Download the VI in this link (also attached).  It gives you the index of the array element that you clicked. Hope this will help you.

    Kind regards
    Nitz

  • Aspire BIOS and RAID m3970

    Hello

I noticed in the tab BIOS for an Acer Aspire M3970 and then advance under the integrated devices, there are options for the SATA mode on "Native IDE", "AHCI" and "RAID".

I would like to know what RAID modes are supported by the RAID option on this forum. I can't seem to find this information anywhere does support at least 1 RAID when you have two drives?

Any help would be great. Thank you.

This system supports Raid 0, Raid 1, Raid 5, and Raid 10 configurations.

If the machine came originally with Vista, and you charged it with Win 7 disc by the same manufacturer, it will go into a grace period and the non-genuine end - the key used for this installation requires data appropriate to the SLIC table in BIOS in order to activate it.
