Outlook Express sent items have disappeared

Outlook Express 6 compacted my messages. Once she had finished I went to sent items and all of my emails I sent between March 2010 and now (August 2010) disappeared.

I searched the file store, located the sent items.dbx ran through a program of dbx and opened it, but the same messages are still missing.

Y at - it elsewhere, they might be? Or anyway to get them back? I REALLY need them for work. Help, please.

Two reasons the most common for what you describe is disruption of the compacting process, (never touch anything until it's finished), or bloated folders. More about that below.

Why OE insists on compacting folders when I close it? :

Recovery methods:

If you use XP/SP2 or SP3, and are fully patched, then you should have a backup of your dbx files in the Recycle Bin (or possibly the message store), copied as bak files.

To restore a folder bak on the message store folder, first find the location of the message store.

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Note the location and navigate on it in Explorer Windows or, copy and paste in start | Run.

In Windows XP, the .dbx files are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in the Solution Explorer, you must enable Show hidden files and folders under start | Control Panel | Folder options | View.

Close OE and in Windows Explorer, click on the dbx to the file missing or empty file, then drag it to the desktop. It can be deleted later once you have successfully restored the bak file. Minimize the message store.

Open OE and, if the folder is missing, create a folder with the * exact * same name as the bak file you want to restore but without the .bak. For example: If the file is Saved.bak, the new folder should be named saved. Open the new folder, and then close OE. If the folder is there, but just empty, continue to the next step.

First of all, check if there is a bak file already in the message. If there is, and you have removed the dbx file, go ahead and rename it in dbx.

If it is not already in the message, open the trash and do a right-click on the file bak for the folder in question and click on restore. Open the message store up and replace the .bak by .dbx file extension. Close the message store and open OE. Messages must be in the folder.

If messages are restored successfully, you can go ahead and delete the old dbx file that you moved to the desktop.

If you have not then bak copies of your dbx files in the Recycle Bin:

DBXpress run in extract disc Mode is the best chance to recover messages:
http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/default.aspx

And see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#4

A general warning to help avoid this in the future:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They finally are damaged. Create your own folders defined by the user for mail storage and move your mail to them. Empty the deleted items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 300 MB, and also empty as is possible to default folders.

Disable analysis in your e-mail anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that devours the CPUs, slows down sending and receiving and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting changes and has even been responsible for the loss of messages. Your up-to-date A / V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more information, see:

If not, I don't know what went wrong in order to check the Recycle Bin of Windows and the BAK files OE message store. If you find any, post back before doing anything.

You drag messages to the new folder?

    Hi Adrianne,

I need more information, are all the missing desktop icons? The sound disappeared, you have a speaker with a red circle and slash inside icon down by the clock?

I recommend you to run a virus scan with the Microsoft Malware removal scan. If that does not help, then download and install Malware bytes.

Let me know if that does or does not work.

  • "Sent items" icon disappears

I am posting this for my sister who is not gifted in computer science.  She uses Outlook Express, but is unable to tell me the version of Windows and Outllok Express, she uses.  My guess is she's using Win XP.

His '' elements of Snet '' disappeared from his Exporess Outllok.  I suspect that the entire toolbar may have disappeared as well.

Can anyone here please help this cela?  Thank you.

A little difficult with limited information.

Sent Items is not on the toolbar of the OE. View | Page layout | Folder bar under the toolbar that the folder is open.

View | Page layout | Folder list displays all folders in a "folder tree" left. No matter which option you use, it will not discriminatory and not only display the sent items. It's all the folders, or none.

Another possibility is that she lost all her messages in sent items. If this is the case, there are bigger problems. Following must be observed when using OE, but not do it all at the moment if it is indeed the messages that have been lost. This will hamper the ability to retrieve messages, if they are needed.

    General precautions for Outlook Express:

Do not archive mail in the receipt or sent items box. Create your own user-defined folders and move messages you want to put in them. Empty the deleted items folder daily. Although the dbx files have a theoretical capacity of 2 GB, I recommend all a 300 MB max for less risk of corruption.

Information on the maximum size of the .dbx files that are used by Outlook Express:
    http://support.Microsoft.com/?kbid=903095

After you're done, followed by compacting your folders manually while working * off * and do it often.

Click Outlook Express at the top of the the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work offline (or double-click on work online in the status bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed.

Hello - in the last month that my sent folder Outlook Express has been completely emptied twice. It is NOT something that I have reaquested, nor is it something that would be easily done accidentally, once again twice. I got emails dating back years. • Outlook express 6 flashes and disappears

I have a Dell desktop computer that is running Windows XP SP3.  I have always used Outlook Express 6 for my mail.  I have 2 identities.  This morning, I checked the mail on an identity.  Then I clicked on "pass the identity."  OE6 flashed and disappeared from the screen.  I tried several times, restarted the computer, tried again.  Same thing.

I ran Spybot, antivirus, Registry Mechanic and CCleaner.  Still having the problem.  I guess something is damaged somewhere.  I went to my husband open OE and username and have remained open.

How can I fix it?  I'm not high-tech.  Should I reinstall OE?  I use Firefox, but have Internet Explorer and which works very well.

    Thanks for any help.

Thanks for your reply.  I had found this possibility when I did a search, but the OE button wasn't in the taskbar.

He now works very well.  I don't know what happened or how it happened, but now it's fine.

    Thanks again.

  • Outlook Express sent Box problem.

Outlook Express 6 stopped saving messages in my Outbox.  I cleaned the Outbox and it started to work, but is now show the date as April 17.  How can I fix it?  OE6 can be updated?

Compaction removes only the space wasted in a file (at least that's what his supposed only to do, but he often corrupts - www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#2, so backup frequently), so you should not lose anything by regular maintenance.  However, if the file becomes more than a few hundred megabytes, performance suffers and the file is much more sensitive to corruption.  So if you approach this stage, you can create a subfolder of sent items (for example sent_04262011) and move all items in this folder and then compact both.  This will give you an own sent items folder and sent items distinct that you can list the messages in.  You can also implement an identity where we keep older E-mail, but then it's time for that identity to access.

You post in a forum of Vista and Outlook Express last used in XP. If you mean Vista Windows Mail, unless you have removed the account, just open the program and use it. You can remove WLMail whenever you want. It is a part of the programs in the window Live Essentials Control Panel uninstall section.
