Partitioning of a M400 pannels for Linux

After getting my Portege M400 working to my satisfaction on Windows, it's time to install Linux before I get bored!

I booted from a Linux installation CD (Gentoo, to be precise) and outside of him take me a while to understand that the 2.6.17 simple kernel does not work on the M400 and switch to installation CD containing an older kernel, everything important seems to be perfectly detected.

The next step is to resize the NTFS of Windows partition to make room for Linux. Since the M400 does not come with any installation of Windows Media, just the recovery DVDs, I want to pay attention to this topic. I'll write a disk image before proceeding, but I would like to know if there are things that I should be careful.

I was under the impression that the recovery DVDs uses a hidden partition to restore the system to its factory condition. However, fdisk indicate only a single NTFS partition, taking up the entire hard drive. This means that there is no hidden partition to be careful after all? Also, is it possible to write the master boot record too in order to install the Linux boot loader, or should I avoid that?

I'd appreciate it really all the advice, in particular accounts of the experiences of others with the installation of Linux on a M400.

Thank you

Toby

Hello

The hidden partition is not known to me on Portege M400 Unit.
Of course some other laptops as a series Qosmio support a partition hidden due to the Qosmio player or other portable because of the Express media player.

Usually the restore CD erase the whole HARD drive also partitions created.
The old version of the recovery CD contained two recovery modes: standard and expert mode. With the expert mode, you were able to choose the partition where the OS is to be installed. I don't know about the recovery with the RECO m system CD.

But I installed Linux on my laptop Toshiba no in different way.
I first installed the Windows operating system, so I created a Linux partition with partition magic and in the end, I installed Linux.

  • System partitions and upgrade to Windows 7, Linux

Yesterday, I bought my first CV - ProBook 4515 s model with SLED 11 Linux preinstaled. Given that I'm not familiar with Linux systems first thing I did was to install Windows 7.

My laptop came with 4 partitions that is formatted in a file system that Windows does not recognize. I'm guessing a partition for installing Linux, two of them are system (HP_TOOLS and HP_RECOVERY) partitions and the fourth was just an empty disk. So I formatted the fourth partition and installed Windows 7.

The problem is now that I am out of system partitions, so can not access other software preinstaled and QuickLook. I tried a single partition format and rename it to HP_TOOLS and then tried to install QuickLook v. 3 but the facility reported that my system has not been supported? I don't want to mess with the other partitions in the fear that I could remove the BIOS, but want to sort this mess up and would certainly like to have some of the options that is is installed with the system.

    Any suggestions?

I think that the HP_TOOLS and HP_RECOVERY partitions are formatted as ext2 or ext3 file system, Windows cannot read. It can only read NTFS and FAT32. There is no way I can think to convert the ext2\3 to NTFS without keeping the integrity of the system. In addition, the files are all intended for linux and not Windows. He has makes no sense to do that. That said, I'm not sure if your laptop has Windows 7 drivers now.

    Hello

I have a Qosmio F30-111 and I need the drivers for the Controller Raid for Linux. Can someone help me.
I have RAID-0 and the laptop does not start. It displays the XP logo and restarts. So I need to boot from cd or USB key to access or repair the raid partition.

  • 2450 is partitioned. No access to start linux on startup

I partitioned the laptop with an extended drive and the logical drives thanks to Paragon Partition Manager and Boot Manager.

However when I start it up, the Partitions do not show. They show only once I'm inside Windows.

Everything is what shows the c drive and the option of using a reader.

I would like to start a linux OS in one of the already partitioned logical drives.

I looked at the recovery disc and the option it seems to go to the use of the Expert.

But I understand not all configurations.

Is there something in the use of Expert who will prevent this program from Toshiba to replace the boot manager that I installed?

Or more simply: what should I do to install Linux in a logical drive already created and formatted for Linux?

I was wrong from the previous instructions.

I have a primary partition that is hidden, which has space for Linux.

It is not a logical partition.

Whenever I have hide the C partition and display the new primary partion and make it active, something in Toshiba substitute these commands return the original C partition as the primary partition.

    That's my problem.

I guess I can then load a Linux OS from the disk once the new primary partition is recognized by the Boot Manager.

    This cannot be true.

I've seen on other comments on the partitions it is possible to load a dual operating system such as Linux on Toshiba Satellite systems, but it has not said how do.

My recovery disk offers me the option to reformat the whole disc/disc or go to expert.

It does not offer the choice of reformatting only C partition.

Not that I want to do right now. As a second question, I would like to know how to make sure an event to occur for me to reload Windows XP in the C partition without having to lose all my data and programs that are in logical partitions in the extended partition.

This also has to do with the expertise section, I presume.

    Hello

I solved the problem. It seems that you can not install on a secondary partition with in an earlier version of windows. You must restart the computer and run the installation from a dvd or other media.  Once you get the installation running you should be able to install on another partition without any problems.

  • If you use firefox for linux, I'm unable to open the game client for a called flash browser game darkorbit.

I'm using Linux Mint 17.2 xfce.
The Firefox I use is 42.0 Mozilla Firefox for Linux Mint Mint - 1.0.
    Shockwave Flash is 11.2r202.
The browser Flash game is DarkOrbit ( www.darkorbit.com ).
The game was working fine until about 2 months ago.

I log in the game (as before) and get on the last page without any problem.
When I click on 'Start' to go to the game client, the screen is black. The browser tab written game client will blink twice.
Please note that everything works fine when I use the chrome Web browser.
DarkOrbit works very well with Firefox on Windows.

Is there a way to use the pepper Flash used in Chrome/chrome using the freshplayerplugin wrapper.

Your Linux distro may have related packages for it.

Alternatively, you can use Chrome or chrome for that one site and use Firefox for everything else.

  • Download Firefox for Linux without Adblock and other extensions

I have a problem downloading of an adapted version of Firefox for Linux to run on a Knoppix Live DVD system, for use in the trial publishable extensions I developed under Windows. (This isn't a development question extension, however, just a problem downloading and the FF configuration properly).

I was surprised as the current (FF40) and anterior (FF34) version for Linux come with 3 extensions installed permanently - NoScript, Adblock Plus and FoxyProxy Standard. They apparently cannot be uninstalled, even if they can be disabled.

I read online in various forums that Adblock Plus is a hog memory and that she, in particular, as well as NoScript, may adversely affect the values with legitimate code on Web sites and extensions. I also read complaints from users who disable Adblock Plus does not remove all its effects.

During my tests I had problems that I thought were the result of Adblock Plus, so I turned off and restart the browser. The situation is greatly improved, but there are still some problems that may or may not be related to the shortage of memory.

The question is this: I want to download versions 'clean' FF for Linux without these extensions part 3 installed, for more conclusive tests, but have not found a way to do it.

I'm also curious as to why these extensions are 'forced' on Linux users. (I hope that never happens on Windows, or I could become a less committed user of the FF).

Firefox any version for Linux, Mac OSX and Windows www.mozilla.org or www.mozilla.org/firefox/all doesn't come with all Extensions.

You already had these extensions installed in Firefox profile, you use with Firefox.

All three of these Extensions are by a third author (s) and not by Mozilla.

  • When released the new version of Mozilla Firefox for Linux.

Whenever I open the browser, it continues to display the message that is earlier than the version of my browser.

But I cant Update since its not released yet for Linux.

Do not wait for the new Version to be published
Other than that, the browser is fast and easy to use

You seem to have the provided version of Firefox 35.0.1 Ubuntu

You can get the update of Firefox 39.0 of in on your distribution package manager or you can get Firefox from www.mozilla.org or www.mozilla.org/firefox/all

If you choose to mozilla.org , sure it is 64-bit as 32 bits will not run unless you have the appropriate packages.

Mozilla does not updates for versions of others, including the packages provided by Linux distributions.

  • What are the features of Mozilla Firefox for Linux?

I found an article about Firefox Desktop features. Linux and Windows have the same characteristics?
If this isn't the case, I need to know the characteristics for Linux.

Firefox for Windows, Mac OS x (10.6 +) and Linux (from mozilla.org) are pretty much the same.

You can find some of the shortcuts from the Menu and KB is a little different on the three operating systems because of their BONES in the Human Interface (HIG) guidelines followed. May also have small differences in appearance.

For example, tools-> Options on Windows is Firefox-> Preferences on Mac and editing-> Preferences under Linux.

Adobe is kind of screwing with Flash by Linux users only supported Flash 11.2 with security updates.

  • Browser Konqueror for Linux has a CPU limitation function useful for Web sites using Flash content. You can add such a feature in Firefox?

I recently discovered that browser Konqueror for Linux can help the user to limit the CPU usage while visiting a Web site using flash technology by changing the settings in the Flash section and by adjusting the slider settings VERY HIGH to HIGH and AVERAGE and so on. It actually works and it doesn't have a direct impact on the overall performance for flash player, but it can lead to conflicts if other such extensions that add blocker or click-to-flash are also enabled.

Maybe you can add a similar setting in Firefox in the browser or just as a useful addon or extension option section.

    Hi Michael,
I love the sound of that. I found an add on which has Visual for the CPU usage as well as can be useful

Topic: memory page also contains a detailed report that breaks down each process that occupies this space. I wonder if it is a supplement that taps by limiting these

  • Why not update for Linux mechanism works?

Firefox informed me this morning that an update was available. In the small window in which this information came, there was a button marked "Update Now". I pressed the button and showed a gray horizontal bar with a short dark color bar moving from left to right. The text in the window says that Firefox has been updated. Unfortunately, that "update" can go on forever with nothing to show for it. So finally, I have to close the window myself (using the window manager).

So my question is: why the update mechanism does not work for Linux?

You have write rights to the Firefox installation folder?

You are using a Firefox installation from the repositories of your Linux distribution or you installed Firefox yourself?

If you used the deposits then you need to update via your software management.

Otherwise, you may need to be updated as long as user root.

  • Linux, Firefox 21.0 and the last flash for LINUX (11.2). I can't view youtube videos because firefox has disabled the plugin. Help!

An hour ago, I watched with happiness of the videos from youtube on Linux using Firefox 20.0 and 11.2 flash. I've just updated firefox and it of now my blocking flash and invites me to update. The problem is I can't update because 11.2 is the LATEST version of the flash for firefox plugin, there is no other version.

Is there a way to prevent the deactivation of my firefox plugin?

The directory structure, at least for linux, seems to have changed for version 21. I have my distribution of firefox / opt/firefox /, and so far I keep the plugin flash in/opt/firefox/plugins /. Verse 21, the plugin directory should be/opt/firefox/browser/plugins/EC directory does not exist by default. You can create or mv just the old directory of plugin to the new location

$ cd/opt/firefox / #(ou partout où votre firefox est installé)
    $ mv plugins / browser /.

Icons / directory has also been moved to that subdirectory, that's why my office firefox button was not correctly displayed after the update.

-The main thing that firefox really should do is to archive the previous version of firefox, whenever there is an update. It is ridiculous to have to deal with this kind of issue immediately after an update when you have important work to do on time! To do a simple option to temporarily return to the previous version of firefox. It would be trivial to implement and could be used when a new release breaks something.
