Pavilion dm4 does not start: black screen with cursor blinking up to no left, no error message

Nowhere on my HP Pavilion dm4 close last night and does not restart.  When I turn on the computer, I get a black screen with a cursor blinking in the upper left corner.  I ran a variety of diagnostics and all seems OK (i.e. no error message).

I am able to start the computer in mode 'Media' - and I see all my files.  However, I'm unable to start the computer normally.  Help, please.

My computer is old - 1 year and 25 days to 25 days outside the warranty period.

Thank you.

    I have a Pavilion Notebook and recently caught the virus from file recovery.  I bought and ran the disc of Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security.  Now, I get a black screen with a flashing cursor in the upper left corner of the screen.  All tests ran for memory, hard disk, etc. are OK.  Now I have a recovery disk, but have not backed up my files.  Any suggestions?

    Download your backed up files, then you can boot from your recovery disks to reinstall Windows.Several options to do so.

    Remove the hard drive and attach it to one > USB adapter . Plug it into another computer via usb port and copy files off the power.

    You can use > Ubuntu Live CD to boot from and backup files.

    OR ->Kaspersky CD has the ability to back up files.

    A1. Wise move IMHO. The computer seems "snappier" now?

    A2. I can't imagine that another owner of a Dimension 8400 (or 4800?) has not encountered this problem before. In fact, there is something else you may need to do: it turns out that KB2607712 is replaced by the KB2616676 in Vista & Win7; Windows XP needs to have both installed [despite the mention you referred in your post on September 14, above] !!!

    => So if Update for Windows XP (KB2607712) is NOT listed in Add/Remove Programs, you will need to manually download/install a revised version [long story, involved - you don't want to know]:

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ACTIONS:
    1. open Internet Explorer to http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=27244 & click on the button CONTINUE.
    2. after VALIDATION, download the installer for KB2607712 & save it to your desktop - NOT run again!
    3. close all open applications (that is, anything with an icon on the taskbar).
    4. double-click on the file that you saved in #2 above to install the update. Follow all the instructions (reboot required).
    5. check that the Update for Windows XP (KB2607712) is now listed in Add/Remove programs.
    PS: If you have NO Office or Silverlight or any installed Windows Live Essentials application, I can tell you how to start your Windows XP computer & full load more quickly.
  • M17x R1 does not start - black screen - fan turns, turns on the keyboard, nothing on the screen.
    Hi all
    Newbie here and desperate.
    I have a problem with M17x my son this morning. Everything worked very well and after some time, turned off the machine it self.  Now it does not start even - at least I think, it won't because there is nothing on the screen as it is empty.
    I've tried several things, including trying to move on and outside, with or without a battery of the power cord.
    I'm at a loss as to what could have happened.
    Help, please.
    Smakwam.
    The gpu of cooking is very easy in fact, that you have designated your oven to about 275 degrees cover a cookie sheet with paper and configure the map out of it by winding 4 balls of aluminum foil and their definition on each corner of the map. you never want to have it put all directly on the sheet. do Cook for about 10 minutes then cool before coming back into the laptop. Always be sure to remove all of the components and the radiator and any residue of thermal paste. After sick cooking you need to reapply a fresh thermal paste. I use artic silver 5. It is has more detailed instructions on this online, as well as photos. You want to make sure it's your video card before you do it just to be sure. I just had to do it again last week, works like a charm for me every time.
  • Satellite M60-170 does not start - black screen
    I have toshiba M60-170, before it was perfect, but now I don't know what is happening?
    When I try to start my computer just for 2 sec, everything is good, then the fan of sounds of the CPU and the screen is black and the stop of HARD drive.
    So everything is stop!
    I try to start again but still does not.
    Some body told me that it is the motherboard!
    Please, someone tell me what is happens with my beautiful laptop?
    Thank you
    It does not sound good friend :(
    But let's try this; Remove the battery and unplug the power adapter for about 20 min.
    After this short period of time connect the two parts, and try to start Notepad.
    If it doesn t help the chances are that your hardware is defective. Like other guys said, it could be a fault of the motherboard or something different like CPU, memory modules.
    I can speculate on failure.
    I think that you don't have many choices. In your case, you should contact the ASP in your country for a control of the laptop.
    Good bye
  • Satellite L850D does not start - black screen
    Ok.. My wife L850D had problems with black screening started upward after the toshiba screen.
    I ran a few different utilities, including a reset... it all started about 3 weeks after the victory 8.1 upgrade.
    Rang technical support who kindly informed that because we put 8.1 on that he cancelled the guarantee. (btw nice guy)
    Then refused to help.
    And went and reloaded Win 8 of my happens, just to see if it was a problem of hardware, software.
    (yes I know, but it must have been only temp).
    It starts fine, sitting there for centuries without problem.
    It wasn't until I downloaded the drivers toshiba, (Yes the good) did a reboot and hey presto. black screen again.
    A little, this would imply that there is a problem with the drivers of toshiba?
    OK so the wife decided screw it, put Win 7 on it.
    Restarted with disk in. sat and sat. Google finally informed me that I had to disable secureboot and put uefi in the csm.
    OK fine, went into the bios, off course start, changed to the csm uefi and restart the computer.
    Now I get nothing; screen all turns on, fan starts, cd rom shots on and nothing stops down immediately if I push the power button.
    I pulled the battery, external and internal, let rest for half an hour and still the same thing.
    Any ideas?
    The history is for me a little confused so let me start from the beginning with some basic stuff.
    In your ad write you didn t what model do you have exactly (L850D-xxx) and I can't check the specs of the laptop but I presume that this laptop comes with preinstalled OS, probably Win8.
    Laptop with factory preinstalled OS that includes all the necessary drivers and tools and utilities. One of them is Toshiba Recovery Media Creator. With this tool, you can create a recovery (DVD or USB) media and it lets reinstall the original OS if it s some problem and HDD recovery does not work.
    Best option now would be to use these media and install original recovery image. Did you create this recovery media?
    Generally speaking when you new notebook you do not have to use the original OS. You can install anything you want, and it has nothing to do with security. You can install any OS, all supported operating systems. So I do not understand how you could get info from technical support.
    In any case, try please connect your laptop to the power supply and restart laptop. What exactly happens? See Toshiba welcome screen? Try pressing F12 repeatedly. There any reaction?
  • Satellite C855D-124 does not start - black screen
    Hello
    I have a problem on my PC (by Satellite C855D-124) specifically was playing a game, and stopped from nowhere I could not do any command then off button.
    But as I returned the call and turned the lights appeared as the charge appears as a small light and also appears on your but then nothing appeared on the monitor, no warning or error message...
    Then it connects but does not seem to do anything and I would like to know if you can help with advice on what happened and what I do or what I can do...
    Sorry for the mistakes but I do on google translator...
    Hello Adrian
    For me it is not easy to understand your problem, but what you can do right now is to restart your laptop and check if the basic operations are working properly. Try restarting several times to see what will happen.
    Start the laptop computer can see you Toshiba welcome screen?
    Is there a usual activity of HARD disk at startup?
  • C850 satellite will not start - black screen with mouse cursor while
    the screen while starting up is black with the cursor display white mouse - but won't start
    the computer is only 3 months with windows 8
    Please help me
    Thank you
    You mean underscore flashing/blinking in the upper left corner?
    It is above all an indicator of malfunction of the HARD drive.
    In your case, I recommend contacting the Toshiba authorised service provider because the laptop is 3 months old. In this case the warranty is still valid and you must have it repaired for free.
  • HP 255 G2 does not start-> black screen (my fault)
    Here's the situation:
    Purchased a HP 255 G2 (windows 8.1) to be used with Linux Mint.
    I know that I have to enable the legacy mode in the BIOS and disable secure boot. I forgot the last part (disable startup secure).
    Now I can't do anything with the laptop, it does not meet the ESC or F10 to enter the BIOS to correct my error.
    I also have a USB stick with flash of the BIOS, but it does not boot from the USB key to reflash the BIOS.
    Does anyone have a clue as to what I can do next? Picked up by HP for repair?
    Hi Fd1sk,
    Your HP 255 G2 is a commercial product and get your question more exposure, I would say post in the trade forums. Here is a link to the forum Commercial Notebook.
    "It was a moment cartoonic, when gravity stops for coyote to make him realize that he was wrong from the beginning."
    Hi, I did a hard job looking for a solution, and after a while, I found a solution. The solution to the problem was a little easy, but at the same time a bit funny too, hehehe.
    The solution was, when I removed the battery, then did what you told me, I even! Even the black of the same screen cursor. Then I tried power the computer nothing do but simply by pressing the power button without the battery in it. The laptop ran using cable ca, and then I was able to use the windows. Its perfect work. Now I have piles in too and its still in good condition.
    Now what do me? Should I replace the battery, I get error 601 (main battery) too. So should I replace it with a new one? I hope that it will be more preferable.
  • HP Pavilion a6500f does not start, white screen
    I work on a computer from a friend and I am a little confused. The computer is an HP Pavillion a6500f with a card mother Foxcon and Phoenix BIOS. When you press the power button, fans turn on, all the start commands and keyboard blinks, just like usual. The screen does nothing, however. No beeps.
    The problem started when my friend had some piece of hardware for internet phone and tried to connect it to his computer, the hardware connection to the router first, and then to the ethernet port. I don't know what the material is, honestly. My friend is Korean, and he got it from the Korea. All the details on the label are in Korean, and I have no idea what it says.
    Once it is plugged in the material for the first time, the computer froze. Over the next few days, he has frozen several times and gave him a few BSOD. After a few days, the screen just would not show anything more. He brought in Best Buy, and they told him it's dust on the motherboard that caused its failure, saying he needed a new. I think they were just trying to sell him a new computer, because it would be an amazing coincidence that the motherboard has failed because of dust when it is plugged in the new material, and in addition, he worked for a few days later. Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks for the help.
    Check the monitor on another PC.  Otherwise, it seems to be a motherboard problem. UGLY.  Best of cases it's power source.
