Pavilion dv4 laptop: HP Pavilion dv4 laptop grey screen vertical lines

(1) a couple of months there are 3 vertical lines have appeared on the left side of the laptop screen.  Then the last two weeks all of a sudden the entire screen turns into a gray color with vertical lines.  Happened three times already and don't know what to do.  Not too computer saavy (I'm a senior) and it will bring relief but I don't want to get cheated and want to be less well informed about what it could be.  Read something about a UPS (not sure what that means).  When this happens, I have of course turn off the pc, wait a few minutes and turn it back on.  Don't know what is the cause.

Maybe I should change the screen, is it expensive?

(2) also I am on a wireless network and pages have sometimes a delay in loading or it says it is not connected.  Called my provider and they do not know what the problem is.  Six mos Fox their service has worked very well, all of a sudden it doesn't and of course they blame my pc.  If anyone knows why this would happen intermittently?

Thanks in advance. Enjoy all your help...

Hello @maxinemaxine1,

Thanks for the quick response!

There may be several reasons why you would have this problem.  Wise software, it can be related to malware.  Or maybe your drivers should be updated.  Hardware wise, the graphics card may be faulty. It is possible that the display cable is not correctly connected or is faulty.  It is also possible that the display on the wall it itself is damaged.  I hope this helps.

Kind regards!

Recently, I spotted the appearance of colored screen vertical lines, each has 1 pixel thick. The lines altogether 6 now. They are distributed in thickness and the positions they take on the screen remains unchanged at the start of the system.

I wonder if this may be incurred by the failure of the video card or the TFT matrix?

When I opened my laptop, a vertical line has appeared in the centre and disappears in a short time like 5-10 minutes of using the device. I went to my dealer and they said they will send the laptop to the company here in the Philippines. Should I back up my files first before sending it even if just the monitor will be replaced? Hello

    Thanks for coming back!

Ok. In this case backup all your data by copying and pasting on external hard drive and the HP Recovery Manager backup tool & expected repair with HP in your region.

You could also do an entire hard drive / image back to another external drive using the built in Windows 8 Control Panel tool and using third-party tools such as Macrium Reflect free. You will need Windows rescue CD to return after restore everything back to the laptop.

  • Pavilion Notebook PC 15 no: not possible for laptop replacement screen

My mother bought a computer Notebook PC 15 non - Pavilion laptop touch screen. A few weeks later, the screen was smashed. I went to my local repair center (PC World) and asked if they could replace the screen. They said that they could not so I decided a have a good good to watch online and could not find a replacement of the exact screen to the laptop. We have seacrhed worldwide for a replacement and have not found one. Our guarantee covers only the technical problems and we didn't have the laptop a few weeks.

We then rang the HP customer service and asked if they could fix it. They said that they could only fix it for £250 or completely replace the laptop. We thought it was ridiculous absoulety because it was worth as a cellar that was worth half of the laptop.

I'm sick and tired and fed in place of the search for replacements of the screen and finding none. Right now we are sitting here and pay for a laptop that has a broken screen.

What I can't wrap the head around if anyone one of these laptops purchased from you or PC world and had a comprehensive warranty on the laptop and they break the screen how they replace or repair? Because PC world could not afford to keep replacing each time a computer laptop full and nobody could not afford to continue to pay £250 to get the screen fixed.

If this is the case your accessibility to replacements for products and services are terrible and your expensense are high especially when the screen itself is worth about £50 himself. This is disgracefull.

My laptop TFT screen is damaged. I asked related personnel. Their suggestion is to buy a new laptop or buy a moniter deskcomputer repair screen being very expensive. Is this true? and can I use another brand TFT to replace?

    Hi cs

Can you please tell me who give you this suggestion? In my opinion, you must know very well what you want and try to find a solution on your way. It will be interesting to know what model of laptop you have.

Try to pick up the information how much it will cost to fix. If you have this information, you can make a decision, what you will do.

  • Is this ok to turn off V-sync on your laptop / LCD screen

Is this ok to turn off V-sync on your laptop / LCD screen? I know they have a refresh rate of 60 Hz but it will happen if I turn off the V-Sync? good or bad? I know that nVIDIA recommends turning off V-sync to solve problems of stuttering with their current drivers until the next version of driver that is supposed to be in June, so that's why I want to have an answer of expertise regarding the V-sync on your laptop / LCD screen, how it)

    Hello berryracer,

The V-sync is the vertical sync.

I can't recommend V-Sync by in the game if possible, there not much difference from native or forced, other than forced takes slightly more resources.

In addition, on the Triple Buffering. The triple-buff forced Control Panel works on application based on OpenGL.

If a game has an anti aliasing, anisotropic filtering or any other option in the game its always best to use the set option instead of forcing by the graphics card Control Panel.

Usually turning off V-sync increases the FPS, you can check it out.

What will work restores your computer to its original factory state using HP recovery media.  It is a DVD and CD set that will erase the hard drive (removing all data, applications and settings, reinstall the original OS, drivers and utilities for HP. In some cases, you will be able to order a USB instead of discs.  You must order at HP; they cannot be downloaded.

The link is on the software page and download drivers for your PC: http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-15-Notebook-PC-series/7137590/model/7484025

Once there, scroll to the bottom of the page and you will see an entry for the command Recovery Media-CD/DVD/USB. Click on the symbol '+' to expand this entty and click on order to press for more details.

Or, if you prefer, you can do the same by contacting HP Customer Service:

Can I just attach an adapter at the end of the wall to the monitor cord to fit Italian DC connector configuration or do I need a converter between the end of the US AC 3 earth-pin male connector and the Italian DC Jack? Some external adapters have a switch to change from AC to DC and some are just automatic. What is the story here? Any help would be appreciated.

The power adapter in your laptop will automatically convert between 110 V to 240 V automatically. You must just the adapter to connect it to the outlet in Italy. Your monitor should also automatically convert the voltage as well, you need just the adapter to connect it to a power outlet Italian.
